Rails 8 includes Kamal 2 and a production Dockerfile, giving teams a documented way to deploy a containerized Rails app to Linux servers they control. The workflow is simpler to start than assembling deployment tooling from scratch, but it does not provision or secure the server, manage DNS, or remove the need to operate the application.

What Kamal 2 changes for Rails deployments

Kamal builds and deploys an application container to Linux servers. Rails 8 ships with Kamal 2 preconfigured, so a new app starts with a deployment configuration and production Dockerfile rather than requiring developers to create those pieces from scratch. The Rails project describes this as a simpler self-managed path; its announcement is not an independent comparison of cost, speed, or reliability.

For a first deployment, the Rails guide uses bin/kamal setup. Later releases use bin/kamal deploy, which builds a new container image and deploys it to the production server. The guide’s “Deploying to Production” instructions are at Rails Getting Started: Deploying to Production.

What you need before the first deployment

The Rails guide’s starter example calls for an Ubuntu LTS server with at least 1 GB of RAM, a container registry account and token, and a configured config/deploy.yml. The 1 GB figure is the guide’s example starting point, not a capacity recommendation for every production app. Choose capacity based on the application’s workload and operational needs.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • A Linux server: The guide names Hetzner and DigitalOcean as examples, not as a ranked or price-compared list.
  • A container registry: Rails’ announcement mentions Docker Hub and GitHub as image-storage examples. The sources do not establish that a paid plan is necessary.
  • Registry credentials: The Rails guide instructs you to provide the registry token through the KAMAL_REGISTRY_PASSWORD environment variable.
  • Deployment configuration: Set the server host and image details in config/deploy.yml.
  • DNS and SSL, if using a domain: For the guide’s automated SSL example, configure the proxy host and SSL option, and make sure the domain’s DNS record points to the server.

Before choosing a provider, compare the region and latency you need, total compute and storage costs, support and recovery options, and the Linux administration your team can handle. For a registry, consider existing team access, authentication, image retention, and any applicable cost. The cited Rails materials do not identify a best provider or registry.

Deploy a Rails app with Kamal

  1. Configure the target and image. Review config/deploy.yml and supply the host and image details for your app.
  2. Set registry credentials. Make the registry token available as KAMAL_REGISTRY_PASSWORD; handle it as a secret rather than placing it in application code.
  3. Configure domain settings if needed. For a domain with automated SSL in the Rails guide’s example, set the proxy host and SSL option, then point DNS to the server.
  4. Run the initial setup. From the app directory, run bin/kamal setup to prepare the server for deployment.
  5. Deploy later releases. Run bin/kamal deploy. Kamal builds a new container and deploys it to the configured production server.

Kamal’s own installation documentation also describes installing through RubyGems or using a Docker image, initializing configuration, supplying registry credentials and Rails secrets, and running setup: Kamal installation documentation. Follow the current instructions for the installation method you choose.

How Kamal Proxy and Thruster fit together

These are separate components with different jobs. Rails’ announcement says Kamal Proxy replaces the generic Traefik option used when Kamal launched. The project describes the proxy as supporting zero-downtime deploys, automated Let’s Encrypt certificates, and multiple applications on one server. Those are project-described capabilities, not a guarantee that every application or configuration will avoid user impact.

Thruster is included in Rails 8’s default production Dockerfile in front of Puma. The Rails announcement and release notes describe it as providing X-Sendfile acceleration, asset caching, and compression. In practical terms, Kamal Proxy handles deployment-time routing features, while Thruster sits in the app’s request-serving path alongside Puma.

What Kamal does not take off your plate

Kamal provides a deployment workflow to servers the team controls; it does not make those servers a managed platform. The team remains responsible for provisioning and securing the machines, protecting credentials and secrets, configuring DNS, monitoring the application, planning recovery, and providing enough capacity for the workload.

A platform-as-a-service may be a better fit when a team prefers a provider to handle more of the infrastructure and operational work. Kamal may suit teams that want direct control over their servers and are prepared to operate them. The Rails announcement advocates for self-managed deployment; it does not offer a neutral total-cost comparison with PaaS options.

Upgrading an existing Rails application

Rails’ Rails 8.0 release notes recommend moving an existing application to Rails 7.2 first, confirming expected behavior, and having good test coverage before attempting Rails 8.0. Treat the deployment tooling as part of a planned framework upgrade, not as evidence that an existing app will migrate without changes. Use the official Rails upgrade guide for the complete checklist.

What the “under two minutes” claim means

The Rails 8 announcement, published November 7, 2024, presents an “under two minutes” setup scenario as the project’s own claim. It is not an independently measured typical deployment time, and it should not be treated as a guarantee for an app that still needs server provisioning, configuration, credentials, DNS, or operational work. The announcement also identifies Kamal 2 as part of Rails 8; see the Rails 8 announcement and the Rails 8.0 release notes for the project’s version-specific details.
