A payment processor such as Stripe may handle only part of that job; a publisher suite or a combination of products may cover more. There is no universal best platform: the right choice depends on your revenue model, audience, markets, integrations, operational needs, and the full cost of the proposed setup.
What does “payment platform” mean for a publisher?
The phrase can describe several different functions, which may live in one product or be split across several:
- Payment processing: accepts payment through selected methods and moves transactions through a payment provider.
- Recurring billing: schedules subscription charges, creates invoices, and handles renewal timing and payment retries.
- Subscription management: manages plans, offers, subscription terms, upgrades, downgrades, customer account actions, and related workflows.
- Paywall and access control: decides which content or features a person can access based on their subscription or other entitlement.
- Audience and offer optimization: supports segmentation, paywall experiments, conversion reporting, or personalization.
These categories overlap, but they are not interchangeable. Before evaluating a product, map each task to the system that would own it. Identify the system of record for billing and the system of record for entitlements, as well as the team responsible for tax, customer support, and subscriber data.
How do I choose a payment platform for my publication?
Write down the requirements before asking vendors to demonstrate features. That gives your team a consistent basis for comparing a publisher suite, a processor-led setup, and a hybrid architecture.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Specify what you sell. List recurring subscriptions, one-off purchases, memberships, bundles, gift subscriptions, trials, introductory promotions, and any manual-renewal products you need. Include the rules for upgrades, downgrades, and proration.
- Define what access a purchase grants. Identify the content, services, or features that will be gated, how entitlements map to them, and whether those rules must work on your website, in apps, or across other channels.
- Set payment and market requirements. Record the countries you serve, currencies, payment methods, payment-provider choices, and what should happen when a renewal fails. Ask vendors to confirm availability for your specific markets.
- Map subscriber operations. List the customer-service and self-service tasks your team needs to support, including cancellation, refunds, account changes, payment-method updates, renewal notices, and retention workflows.
- Specify data and optimization needs. Decide whether you require audience segments, paywall testing, conversion reporting, subscription insights, or integrations with analytics, CRM, and marketing tools.
- Check technical ownership and delivery capacity. Document your CMS and identity integrations, implementation resources, migration and reconciliation needs, and which team will own billing, entitlements, tax, and support after launch.
- Request the full commercial proposal. Ask for software and processing fees, any usage- or revenue-linked charges, implementation and support costs, contract length, and data-export and exit terms. Compare the complete arrangement rather than a headline rate.
Feature names on a product page do not establish that a capability is included in your proposed plan or available in your country. Ask for the exact plan, configuration, and responsibilities to be documented in the quote and implementation specification. The available product documentation does not provide comparable current quotes, so it cannot support a meaningful vendor price ranking.
What is the best subscription platform for publishers?
There is no defensible universal winner without knowing a publisher’s requirements, geography, integration constraints, and full costs. The following are different platform paths, not equivalent products or independent performance rankings.

| Platform path | What the documented approach covers | When to evaluate it | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Publisher subscription suite | Piano describes Management + Billing as covering registration, pricing, billing, subscription products, access and entitlements, promotions, and churn-related functions. The company also describes personalization, A/B testing, a no-code rules engine, and Stripe Billing integration. | Consider this model if you want a publisher-oriented commerce and access layer with a broader set of subscription functions in one platform. | Piano’s “single commerce engine” description is a vendor statement, not an independent finding about performance or implementation effort. Confirm which functions apply to the proposed plan and configuration. |
| Processor plus subscription-management layer | In Piano’s documented Stripe Billing setup, Piano Subscriptions manages terms, offers, pricing and proration, promotions, access, customer pages, and upgrades or downgrades. Stripe Billing handles subscription schedules, invoices, renewal timing, and retries for Stripe-native payment methods. | Evaluate a hybrid when you want subscription and access management separated from the billing engine, or need to assign different responsibilities to different systems. | Processor-native billing changes operating details. Confirm feature-support boundaries, payment-method coverage, and which product owns each subscriber and billing task. |
| Google Reader Revenue Manager | Google Publisher Center Help documents subscription or contribution prices and recurrence, trial choices, discounts, and product IDs that can associate plan labels with content access. | Evaluate it as a publisher workflow option when its documented plan and access features match your requirements. | Test whether its scope fits your full subscription operations; the documented workflows do not establish that it replaces every enterprise subscription-management system. Verify current eligibility and feature fit directly. |
| App-focused subscription tooling | RevenueCat’s web documentation lists RevenueCat Billing, Stripe Billing, and Paddle Billing as billing-engine options, with routes for web purchase links, SDKs, paywalls, and app-to-web purchases. Its pricing page describes paywall editing and testing, subscription analytics, churn tools, and revenue-based pricing after a stated threshold. | Consider this path if your paid product includes a native mobile app and you need to coordinate app and web entitlements. | The documented app and web capabilities alone do not establish that it is a good general-purpose web-publisher paywall. Confirm current pricing and the billing configuration that applies to your product. |
Piano’s product description says: “Sell subscriptions, memberships, premium tiers, or bundles. Automate billing cycles, retries, and upgrades. Run promotions. Gate content. All from a single commerce engine that works out of the box.” This is Piano’s own description, not an independent assessment of results.
Do I need a paywall platform or just Stripe?
That depends on the work your publication needs beyond accepting payments. If your requirements include content entitlements, offer rules, subscriber self-service, or publisher-specific access workflows, determine whether Stripe and your existing systems cover them or whether you need a separate subscription-management or paywall layer. Do not assume that choosing a processor also determines who manages every subscription task.

A hybrid setup can divide the work. In Piano’s documented Stripe Billing integration, Piano Subscriptions owns subscription terms and offers, pricing and proration, promotions, access, customer pages, and upgrades or downgrades. Stripe Billing owns subscription schedules, invoices, renewal timing, and retries for Stripe-native payment methods. That division is specific to the documented configuration; another architecture may assign ownership differently.
Review the operating details as well as the feature list. Piano’s feature documentation describes one-off and recurring charges, trials, promotions, gifts, dynamic terms, selected payment methods, tax-rate behavior, and renewal workflows. It also notes a Stripe dashboard display quirk: a newly created subscription can show one cancelled and one succeeded transaction. The documentation says this is visual and does not affect subscription processing. Such implementation notes are a reason to review support documentation and escalation paths before launch, not a basis for assuming the same behavior in every setup.

What should a publisher compare in subscription billing software?
Use the same checklist for every shortlist candidate, including products you already own. Ask the vendor to distinguish what is available now, what depends on configuration or another provider, and what is outside the proposed plan.
- Paywall and entitlements: Can the system express your access rules, and which system is authoritative when a customer’s access changes?
- Revenue models: Which of your needed recurring, one-off, membership, bundle, gift, trial, and manual-renewal offers are supported?
- Offer and plan changes: How do promotions, proration, upgrades, downgrades, and changes to subscription terms work?
- Payments and markets: Which payment methods and currencies are supported for your audience and countries?
- Billing ownership: Which system controls schedules, invoices, renewal timing, retries, and payment-method behavior?
- Failed renewals: What retry and involuntary-churn workflows are available, and which team monitors them?
- Tax and merchant responsibilities: What tax configuration is supported, and who is responsible for tax obligations and the merchant relationship? Do not infer responsibility from a feature label.
- Subscriber service: What can customers do themselves, and what tools and workflows will your support team use for cancellations, refunds, and account changes?
- Data and reporting: What subscription reports and exports are available, and can the data reach your analytics, CRM, and marketing systems?
- Testing and personalization: Which paywall experiments, audience rules, or personalization features are included in the proposed configuration?
- Integrations: How will the product connect to your CMS, identity system, CRM, analytics stack, and apps?
- Delivery and continuity: What migration, reconciliation, implementation, and support work is expected? What data can you export, and what happens when the contract ends?
- Total cost: What are the software, processing, implementation, support, usage- or revenue-linked charges, and contract commitments over the same period?
What should I verify before signing?
Turn the shortlist into a written architecture and a comparable proposal. For each product, document the owner of checkout, billing schedules and retries, subscriber records, entitlements, paywall rules, tax configuration, and customer support. Include the relevant integrations and any dependencies on another provider.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Then ask shortlisted vendors for current, geography-specific payment methods and responsibilities; a complete fee schedule; implementation scope; migration and reconciliation plans; integration references; service commitments; data-export formats; and contract and exit provisions. Confirm each advertised capability against the exact plan and configuration in the proposal. For Google Reader Revenue Manager, test the workflow against your operating needs and check eligibility directly; for app-focused products, validate the billing setup and app-to-web entitlement requirements against your actual product mix.
What can Google Reader Revenue Manager do?
Google Publisher Center Help documents monthly, quarterly, half-yearly, and annual billing periods for reader subscriptions or contributions. It lists trial options of no trial, 7, 14, 30, or 60 days, as well as discounts and product IDs that can associate plan labels with content access. Pricing plans default to Draft and must be changed to Live to appear on a site. Google’s help also distinguishes contributions from donations and says Reader Revenue Manager does not support donations. These are documented workflow details, not proof that the product covers every publisher’s subscription-management needs.
