A public blockchain records a crypto transfer according to that network’s rules; an exchange separately detects the transfer and decides when to credit it to your account. A transaction can therefore be visible on-chain while your exchange deposit still says pending—or before the funds are available to trade or withdraw.
What happens when cryptocurrency moves to an exchange?
A deposit is a handoff between two systems, not a single action. The blockchain records a transaction and updates its shared state. The exchange monitors supported networks, matches a detected transaction to a customer deposit, and applies its own rules for crediting the account.
- The destination is set. On the exchange, select the asset and network you intend to use, then copy the deposit address and any required memo or tag.
- The transfer is signed and sent. A wallet or sending platform creates a transaction and authorizes it with the relevant private key. The signed transaction is broadcast to the network.
- The network processes it. The transaction may wait for inclusion in a block. Network participants check it against that blockchain’s rules, and an accepted transaction changes the recorded state.
- The exchange detects it. The exchange observes the relevant network and checks whether the transaction meets its deposit requirements. It may show the deposit as pending while it waits for confirmations or performs internal processing.
- The account status changes. Depending on the exchange and asset, the deposit may become available for trading before it is available for withdrawal.
A signature authorizes an action under the relevant key; it does not mean that an exchange has credited the funds. Likewise, seeing a transaction on a block explorer does not by itself show that the exchange has made the balance available.
What does a public blockchain do?
A public blockchain is a shared database maintained across network nodes. Transactions change the state recorded by the network, while blocks provide an ordered history and link to earlier blocks. Nodes apply the protocol’s rules to determine which transactions and blocks to accept.

Ethereum’s official technical introduction describes a blockchain as “a public database that is updated and shared across many computers in a network.” That is a useful general description, but transaction formats, consensus mechanisms, and finality rules differ between blockchains.
How Ethereum’s proof-of-stake process works
Ethereum is one specific example; its proof-of-stake details should not be assumed to apply to Bitcoin, other proof-of-stake networks, layer-2 networks, or an exchange’s internal ledger.

Transactions, blocks, and validators
Ethereum’s documentation explains that a signed transaction is broadcast to the network and can wait in a transaction pool before a validator includes it in a block. Validators propose blocks and attest to blocks they consider valid. Nodes check proposed state changes and follow Ethereum’s protocol rules.
Ethereum documents a 12-second slot duration and a 32 ETH validator deposit. These are Ethereum-specific protocol parameters, not a promise that a transfer will complete in 12 seconds or a general requirement for using an exchange. See Ethereum’s proof-of-stake documentation for its consensus process.

What finality means
Ethereum uses checkpoint votes to establish finality: the protocol considers checkpoint links finalized when at least two-thirds of staked ETH has voted for them. Finality is a protocol concept, not the same thing as an exchange marking a customer’s deposit available. Exchanges may apply their own confirmation and processing policies after a transaction appears on-chain.
Why can an exchange deposit be pending?
“On-chain,” “credited,” “tradable,” and “withdrawable” describe different states. A transaction may be recorded by a network, but the exchange can continue to wait until its asset-specific confirmation threshold is met. It can also distinguish between crediting funds for trading and enabling withdrawals.

Coinbase Exchange says confirmation requirements vary by asset; its support page gives Bitcoin with two confirmations as an example. Kraken describes deposits that have enough confirmations to be credited for trading but are not yet available for withdrawal, followed by a later status when withdrawals are available. These are examples of platform procedures, not universal confirmation rules. Check the current requirement for the exact asset and network on the exchange’s deposit page.
To investigate a delay, compare the transaction hash on the relevant network explorer with the deposit status shown by the exchange. If the transaction is visible on-chain but the account remains pending, the exchange may still be waiting for confirmations or completing its own processing. Coinbase’s explanation of pending, unconfirmed transactions and Kraken’s deposit processing information illustrate why the applicable status depends on the platform and asset.

Which network should you use for a deposit?
Choose a network that the destination exchange supports for that exact asset. A matching ticker or coin name is not enough: the sending and receiving platforms must use a compatible network, and some deposits require a memo or tag as well as an address. Sending an unsupported asset or using the wrong network can result in loss.
- Open the destination exchange’s deposit page and select the asset.
- Choose a network that the exchange currently lists as available for that asset in your region.
- Copy the displayed address directly and include any required memo or tag.
- On the sending platform, verify the asset, network, address, and any memo or tag before confirming the transfer.
- For a first transfer, follow the exchange’s guidance; Coinbase recommends considering a small test deposit. A test transfer does not guarantee recovery or make an unsupported route safe.
Supported networks, regional availability, deposit minimums, and confirmation thresholds can change. Coinbase’s crypto withdrawal instructions and Kraken’s guidance on cryptocurrency deposit addresses provide platform-specific examples. Check the live deposit page immediately before sending.
How to compare exchange deposit requirements
There is no universal exchange confirmation count or universal time to credit. When comparing two services, check the same asset and network on both platforms and compare the requirements that affect your transfer:
- Whether the exchange supports that asset-network combination in your region.
- The required confirmation count and any deposit minimum.
- When the balance becomes available for trading and when it becomes available for withdrawal.
- Whether a memo or tag is required.
- How the platform handles delayed or unsupported deposits.
Help pages explain workflows and account statuses; they do not by themselves establish that one exchange is faster or better overall.

What self-custody changes—and what it does not
If you send from a self-custody wallet, you control the key used to sign the transaction. A hardware wallet is one option for storing keys and signing transactions, but it is not required to use an exchange. It does not change the network’s confirmation process or determine when an exchange credits a deposit.
