You do not need a PS5 upgrade to play a compatible PS4 version, and a PS4 disc cannot be used on PS5 Digital Edition. Sony’s current support page says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable, but a small number are excluded and some titles may behave differently.
What PS4 backward compatibility means on PS5
Backward compatibility lets the PS5 run the PS4 version of a supported game. It does not automatically grant the separate PS5 version. Sony’s current support page describes the playable catalog as the “overwhelming majority” of more than 4,000 PS4 games. A November 9, 2020 Sony FAQ gave a dated estimate of more than 99% of 4,000+ games; that is a historical figure, not a new 2026 measurement. How to play a PS4 game you own
Digital PS4 games
- Sign in to the PlayStation account that owns the game.
- Open Games home and then Game Library.
- Select the compatible PS4 game and download it.
Sony also supports transferring digital games and game data over Wi-Fi. For save files, its FAQ describes transfer by LAN, Wi-Fi, or compatible USB storage. See PlayStation’s installation and transfer guidance and its PS5 FAQ.
PS4 game discs
- Use a PS5 model with a disc drive; PS5 Digital Edition cannot read PS4 discs.
- Insert the disc and install or update the game if prompted.
- Leave the disc inserted whenever you play. It acts as the license check even if game data is installed on the console.
A disc-based PS4 game cannot be played through a digital download on a Digital Edition console unless you separately own or acquire a digital license.

PS4 compatibility versus a PS5 upgrade
Playing the compatible PS4 version and upgrading to a PS5 version are separate options. Some titles offer an upgrade, which may be free or paid; eligibility and price depend on the game. If you have a disc copy, the upgrade requires a PS5 with a disc drive, and the PS4 disc must remain inserted to play the upgraded version. Sony says PlayStation Plus games are not eligible for these offers unless the offer explicitly says otherwise. Check the title’s current offer and terms in the PS5 game upgrade guide and PlayStation games support index.
If you skip an upgrade, or a game has no PS5 version, you can still play its PS4 version on PS5 if it is compatible and you can access it through your digital library or disc drive.

Which PS4 games do not work?
Sony’s support page currently identifies these six games as PS4-only:
- Afro Samurai 2 Revenge of Kuma Volume One
- Just Deal With It!
- Robinson: The Journey
- We Sing
- Hitman Go: Definitive Edition
- Shadwen
Sony says the list can change and excludes demos, media, and non-game applications. Before buying a game specifically for PS5 use, check the live compatibility list and the PlayStation Store listing: incompatible games are labeled “Playable on: PS4 only.”

What may differ when a PS4 game runs on PS5?
Compatibility does not guarantee identical behavior or a universal performance boost. Some PS4 games benefit from Game Boost, which can result in higher or smoother frame rates, but the benefit is title-dependent. Sony also warns that some PS4 features may be unavailable and that games can show errors or unexpected behavior. Keep PS5 system software current, and try the game before buying add-ons for it if you are uncertain about how it runs.
Some PS4-era features are unavailable during PS4 gameplay on PS5: the PS4 SHARE menu does not appear, though the DualSense Create button can capture screenshots and clips; PS4 tournaments and In-Game Live from PlayStation are not supported; and PS4 Second Screen and game companion apps are not supported. PS3 game discs are not supported either. The Sony support page lists these limitations.

Can PS4 games run from an external hard drive?
Yes. A compatible USB drive previously used with PS4 can be connected to PS5, and supported PS4 games can run directly from external USB storage. Sony specifies SuperSpeed USB connections and capacities from 250 GB to 8 TB. External storage is optional; it is useful if you want to move an existing PS4 library or keep more games installed without using the PS5’s internal storage. Check Sony’s external USB storage requirements before choosing a drive.

Supported PS4 games on PS5 can be played with DualSense, DUALSHOCK 4, and officially licensed third-party gamepad controllers. Specialty licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks, and flight sticks may also work with supported titles; confirm compatibility with the accessory maker for the particular device and game.

For PS VR games, you need the PS VR headset, the PS4 PlayStation Camera, and a camera adaptor. The PS5 HD Camera does not replace the PS4 camera for PS VR. Some titles also require PlayStation Move controllers or support the PS VR Aim controller. Sony’s compatibility guidance covers supported controllers and VR equipment.
Check these details for a specific game
- How you own it: digital license or PS4 disc.
- Which PS5 you have: a disc-drive model is required for PS4 discs and disc-based upgrades.
- Which version you want: PS4 compatibility is distinct from a separately offered PS5 upgrade.
- Title-specific behavior: check the Store listing and Sony’s current compatibility information for exclusions or known limitations.
- Storage: if you plan to play from USB, verify that the drive meets Sony’s requirements.
Sony’s 2020 FAQ says PS4 and PS5 players can play together in the same multiplayer game when using the PS4 version, but multiplayer support varies by title and can change. Check the game’s current support information if cross-generation play matters to you.
