Pop culture enters digital games in several distinct ways: a game may host a limited-time celebrity event, add themed locations and music, offer licensed characters, or let creators build experiences using approved entertainment properties. Those formats differ in who makes the content, how long it lasts, and what permissions creators need.
How does pop culture appear in digital games?
“Crossover” can describe very different experiences. A collaboration might change a game’s setting for a season, put an artist or fictional character into the game, add music players can interact with, or authorize creators to build a separate experience around a franchise.
- Themed locations and events: a game publisher adds recognizable places, characters, or story elements for a scheduled period.
- Artist and character appearances: musicians or fictional figures appear in the game, sometimes alongside related cosmetics or activities.
- Music and rhythm play: licensed tracks become part of an interactive music experience rather than only background audio.
- Creator-built licensed worlds: creators apply to use approved intellectual property (IP) in experiences they make under platform and rights-holder rules.
These formats are not interchangeable. A temporary in-game event is different from a licensing system that lets eligible creators make experiences with selected properties.
What did Fortnite’s Chapter 2 Remix collaboration include?
Epic Games described Fortnite Chapter 2 Remix as a scheduled season built around music icons and a returning island. The November 2024 announcement said weekly location and loot changes drew on earlier Fortnite gameplay and music, with Snoop Dogg at the Agency, Eminem at the Grotto, and Ice Spice at Shark Island. Epic framed the finale as a tribute to Juice WRLD. The season ran from November 2 through November 30, 2024, and its in-game finale was scheduled for November 30. Epic’s Chapter 2 Remix announcement documents the event and its dates.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This is an example of a collaboration woven into a game’s setting and calendar, rather than simply a license for players to build their own franchise-based game. The dates are historical; check Fortnite’s current announcements before assuming a past event remains playable.
How can Roblox creators use licensed franchises?
Roblox announced a licensing platform in July 2025, with a License Manager and a catalog where creators can browse IP and apply to use it. Its launch partners were Lionsgate, Netflix, Sega, and Kodansha. Roblox said seven properties were initially available: Stranger Things, Squid Game, Twilight, Saw, Divergent, Now You See Me, and Like a Dragon. The catalog and eligibility conditions can change, so consult the current Roblox Creator Hub licensing documentation rather than treating that launch list as permanent.

The system is permission-based, not blanket permission to use any recognizable character. Roblox says creators can apply for a listed license and rights holders can approve or decline the request. The Creator Hub describes a process in which an applicant selects a game, reviews the license terms and content standards, and submits a pitch for review. Rights holders can set terms, scan for IP use, and collect revenue shares. Roblox’s July 2025 announcement reported a platform-wide average of 97.8 million daily active users as of Q1 2025, but that figure does not show how many people played any specific licensed experience. Roblox’s licensing-platform announcement explains the launch and its initial partners.
How does Fortnite licensing for creators differ?
Epic also publishes partner-specific licensing terms for creator templates in Fortnite Creative and Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN). Its IP partner fee schedule has listed programs involving LEGO, Netflix’s Squid Game, Paramount’s TMNT, and Skybound’s The Walking Dead Universe, with different engagement-payout shares. Those terms are specific to listed partners and may change; they should not be generalized to every Fortnite collaboration. Epic’s Fortnite Developer Rules direct creators using third-party IP to follow the relevant license and brand rules.

This is a creator-facing mechanism: it governs experiences made with licensed properties. It is distinct from a player attending a limited-time event or buying an in-game cosmetic. Check the live schedule and the applicable agreement before relying on any payout share or permission.

| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What is the format? | A cosmetic, artist appearance, music activity, themed map, and licensed creator-built world offer different kinds of interaction. |
| How long is it available? | A scheduled event can end on a stated date; a creator experience depends on its license and platform status. |
| Who makes the content? | A publisher and rights holder may produce an event, while a licensing platform may let eligible third-party creators pitch experiences. |
| What permissions and terms apply? | Applications, content standards, brand rules, eligibility, and revenue-share terms vary by platform and rights holder. |
Roblox’s own figures also illustrate why platform scale should not be mistaken for the reach of an individual crossover. Roblox reported 79.5 million daily active users as of June 30, 2024, in its September 2024 RDC announcement; its later July 2025 licensing announcement reported 97.8 million average daily active users for Q1 2025. These are company-reported platform-wide figures, not audience counts for a specific partnership. Roblox also reported $923 million in creator earnings for calendar 2024, up from $741 million in 2023; that total covers platform creators overall, not licensed collaborations alone. The announcements establish that these formats and programs exist, but do not show that every game is adopting them or measure their cultural or commercial impact.
