1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePonoko lets you upload a design, choose a manufacturing process and material, review an online quote, and order custom parts. For laser cutting, the essential starting point is a top-down vector drawing of flat-sheet geometry—not a perspective illustration. That makes Ponoko useful for prototypes and small runs of panels, enclosures, brackets, signs, and fixtures, provided the part can be made with the process you select.
How the Ponoko ordering process works
- Prepare the design. For laser-cut parts, draw the geometry from above as lines that define cuts in flat sheet. A perspective illustration does not tell the cutter where to make the profile. See Ponoko’s laser-cut design guidance.
- Upload and choose how to make it. Select a process, material, thickness, quantity, and any available finishing options. Ponoko describes its workflow as adding a design, selecting a material, and getting an instant price; its current service pages also describe automated design-for-manufacturing feedback and online quoting. Review the warnings and quote before proceeding: Ponoko’s service page and laser-cutting information.
- Check the geometry and quote. Confirm that the chosen process can make the part, inspect dimensions and clearances, and account for kerf—the material removed by the cutting beam. The quote reflects design details such as material area, thickness, cut length, complexity, engraving, and machine time.
- Place the order and verify delivery terms. Check the live checkout details for lead time, shipping, and any same-day eligibility. Timing can depend on process, material, quantity, cutoff time, and destination, so an advertised or previously observed turnaround is not a guarantee for a particular order.
What Ponoko can make—and when laser cutting fits
Ponoko offers more than laser cutting: its described capabilities include CO2 and fiber laser cutting, 3D printing, injection molding, photochemical machining, and PCB fabrication and assembly. The right choice depends on the shape and production need, not just the convenience of uploading a file.
Good candidates for laser cutting
Laser cutting is a practical option for parts made from flat sheet: custom enclosures, panels, brackets, signs, fixtures, and other profiles. It avoids custom tooling, which can make it suitable for one-off prototypes and low-volume work. Ponoko’s current pages advertise no minimum order quantity, but verify the applicable commercial terms at checkout.
When another process may be better
Standard laser cutting makes essentially two-dimensional profiles from flat material. It is not a substitute for every three-dimensional part or production method. Consider 3D printing when the geometry needs to be built as a three-dimensional object, CNC milling when the part requires machining from solid stock, or injection molding when the design and quantity justify that process. Ponoko lists some alternative processes, but the available material, finish, and suitability for a specific design depend on the live offering.

How to estimate cost and reduce avoidable expense
There is no useful universal price for a Ponoko part: the quote depends on the design, process, selected material, and order details. For laser cutting, material area, thickness, total cut length, geometric complexity, engraving area, and machine time can all affect cost. An intricate design generally takes more cutting time than a simple one.
- Simplify where the function allows. Fewer and simpler cut paths can reduce machine time.
- Use material efficiently. Arrange parts to use sheet area well. Where the design permits, sharing a cutting line between adjacent parts can reduce cutting and material use.
- Prototype uncertain fits. Order a test part when clearances, material behavior, or edge quality matter; do not assume a nominal drawing dimension guarantees a finished fit.
- Compare the delivered quote. Include the selected material and thickness, quantity, finishing, shipping, and schedule shown at checkout rather than comparing a bare part price.
Kerf, accuracy, and fit: what the published figures mean
Ponoko’s Help Center technical articles from 2021 report dimensional accuracy of ±0.005 inch and average kerf of ±0.004 inch for its laser-cutting setup. A separate 2021 article says kerf starts around 0.2 mm and varies with material thickness and hardness, sheet flatness, path curvature, and beam geometry. These are dated vendor figures, not a guarantee for every current machine, material, or design; use the live design guidance and prototype critical parts.

Kerf matters because the beam removes a strip of material along the cut path. Internal openings can end up smaller and external profiles smaller than the line-to-line drawing suggests, depending on how the cut is accounted for. For parts that must fit together, plan for clearance and test the actual material and geometry before committing to a larger run. Ponoko explains the factors that influence kerf in its kerf guidance.

| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Is the part a flat profile or a true 3D shape? | Flat-sheet profiles suit laser cutting; other geometry may call for 3D printing, machining, or molding. |
| How many parts do you need? | Tooling-free cutting can suit one-offs and small runs, while larger production quantities may favor a different process. Compare actual quotes. |
| Does the material and finish meet the need? | Material choice affects strength, appearance, cut behavior, and availability. Check the current options for the selected process. |
| How critical are dimensions and fit? | Tight clearances merit a prototype and confirmation of process-specific tolerances rather than relying on a general figure. |
| When must the parts arrive? | Lead time and shipping vary with order specifics and destination; rely on the current checkout estimate. |
| What is the total delivered cost? | Account for material, cutting or machine time, finishing, quantity, and delivery—not only the initial quote for a part. |
Ponoko is most compelling when you have a manufacturable design, want a quick route to a custom part without arranging tooling yourself, and can validate the quoted process, material, fit, and delivery terms before ordering. Its online quote is a useful starting point, but the design and live order details determine whether the result meets your requirements.
