Can you get a refund on a PlayStation game? Sometimes. In the UK and Canada, Sony’s standard policy allows a request within 14 days of purchase only if the game or add-on has not started downloading or streaming. Pre-orders, in-game consumables, and subscriptions have separate conditions, and the policy that applies depends on the country linked to your PlayStation account. Check that country’s PlayStation Support page before submitting a request.

When can you get a refund for a game or add-on?

Under Sony’s UK and Canada policies, you can request cancellation of a game or game add-on within 14 days of purchase if downloading or streaming has not begun. If the content has already downloaded or streamed, it is generally ineligible under those policies unless it is faulty. The 14-day period is therefore not an unconditional trial period.

These terms describe Sony’s standard policy language for the UK and Canada, not a universal rule for every country. If you have downloaded a game that is faulty, contact PlayStation Support; approval is not guaranteed. Local consumer rights may also apply.

How do pre-order refunds work?

Pre-orders use the release date as well as the purchase date to determine when you can request a refund. Sony’s US guidance and the UK and Canada policies describe these two cases:

When you paid	When to request	Download or streaming condition
More than 14 days before release	Before the release date	The main content must not have started downloading or streaming.
14 days or less before release	Within 14 days of payment	The content must not have started downloading or streaming.

Preloading counts as downloading the main content. Automatic downloads can begin without you manually starting one, so check the download status and auto-download settings promptly if you may cancel. Cancelling a pre-order can also remove access to bonus content made available before launch.

Can you refund in-game purchases or currency?

Virtual currency, boosts, and other items consumed during gameplay are treated differently from a game or DLC. Sony’s Ireland guidance says an in-game consumable request must be made within 14 days, the purchase must have been made through PlayStation Store, and the game must not have launched after the purchase. Under the UK and Canada policies, a consumable bought through the Store outside gameplay is delivered the next time the game launches; purchases made during gameplay are delivered immediately. Delivered items are generally not refundable unless faulty.

That means launching a game after buying a Store consumable may deliver the item and affect eligibility, even if you have not used it. These details are category- and market-specific; check your account country’s policy.

Can you get a subscription refund?

Sony’s Ireland, UK, and Canada materials describe a 14-day period from the initial subscription transaction for requesting a refund. This guidance concerns the first payment, not an ordinary recurring payment. Free-trial days count toward the 14-day period. If you used the service—for example, by playing online, downloading monthly games, or using cloud storage—the refund may be reduced. The UK and Canada policies describe a pro-rata reduction based on use.

Refunding a charge and stopping future billing are separate actions. Cancelling renewal prevents future subscription charges; it does not itself refund a payment already made. Under the UK and Canada policy, service generally remains available until the next payment date after cancellation.

How do you request a refund, and how long can it take?

Use the PlayStation Support page for the country associated with your account and follow its refund-request instructions. In Ireland, the support page directs customers to contact PlayStation or use its online assistant. It says a refund may take 10 days to arrive and will go to the original payment method where possible; if that is not possible, Sony credits the PlayStation wallet. Those timing and destination details are Ireland-specific, not a promise for every region or payment type.

For other countries, check the local Support page for the available request flow, payment-method exceptions, and expected timing. The US pre-order guidance also says refunds go to the original payment method where possible, but the applicable destination can depend on the payment method.

What if you bought a voucher or added money to your wallet?

PlayStation Store wallet top-ups cannot be cancelled under the cited Ireland, UK, and Canada guidance. If you bought a voucher code from a retailer, contact that retailer: the purchase was made outside PlayStation Store. The UK and Canada policies also say online ID changes are generally non-refundable unless faulty.

Why can similar purchases get different answers?

Eligibility depends on several details together: the purchase category, when you paid, whether content downloaded or streamed, whether a game launched after a consumable purchase, whether a subscription was used, and which country and payment method apply. A game, pre-order, consumable, and subscription are not interchangeable under Sony’s policies. Check the current terms for your account market, especially if local consumer protections could affect your rights.
