Photo-induced force microscopy (PiFM) can map nanoscale chemical differences at a semiconductor surface by combining atomic force microscopy (AFM) with optical excitation. It measures a light-induced force linked to the sample’s near-field response, producing maps that can show chemical or vibrational contrast alongside surface topography. That can help identify what a tiny particle or material boundary is—not, by itself, prove that it caused an electrical failure.

What PiFM measures

PiFM raster-scans a sharp AFM tip across an illuminated sample. The optical field is enhanced near the tip apex, locally polarizing the material. The resulting interaction adds a small force to the cantilever; changes in its oscillation are used to infer that force and build a map.

When the illumination wavelength is selected to probe an absorption feature, the response can provide chemical or molecular-vibrational contrast. The force is reported to be in the piconewton range or less. A 2022 tutorial review in Chemical Society Reviews discusses both dipole–dipole and photothermal contributions to the signal, so PiFM should not be described as measuring only one force mechanism.

PiFM can also record topography. The key distinction is that a height or shape map describes surface morphology, while wavelength-dependent PiFM contrast can help distinguish materials with different optical or vibrational responses.

What semiconductor studies have shown

A 2018 semiconductor-focused paper by Sung Park, Derek Nowak, and Tom Albrecht, published in the ASM International ISTFA proceedings, describes mapping compound materials used in semiconductor fabrication. Its examples include Si3N4, SiO2, SiGe, low-k materials, directed-self-assembly surfaces, strain in a SiGe/SiO2 structure, and photoresist. The authors report approximately 10 nm spatial resolution in the examples presented; that figure describes those experiments, not a guaranteed resolution for every sample or instrument.

PiFM’s chemical contrast can be useful when a feature’s appearance alone is ambiguous. In a 2018 ACS Nano study of an all-polymer solar cell—not a semiconductor-device defect study—AFM topography and phase correlated poorly with PiFM contrast in the studied system. PiFM mapped donor and acceptor domains at resolution approaching 10 nm. This adjacent example illustrates why morphology alone may not establish what a nanoscale feature is.

What it can add to defect review

PiFM is most relevant when a localized feature needs chemical or molecular-vibrational identification at very small scales. A Molecular Vista-sponsored AZoM article published October 5, 2026, describes a wafer-review workflow using the company’s Vista 300 Review PiFM and presents examples identified as a 15 nm Teflon particle and a 5 nm PSL particle. The article also advertises sub-5 nm imaging capability for that system. These are vendor-sponsored demonstrations and product claims, not independent performance validation across semiconductor defect populations.

The distinction matters in practice: PiFM can help characterize the material response of a particle or boundary, but a chemical map alone does not establish that the feature is electrically harmful, identify a specific electronic trap state, or prove a yield-loss mechanism. Those conclusions require corroborating electrical, process, or materials evidence.

PiFM compared with SEM/EDX

These methods provide different kinds of information and can serve different stages of a review. SEM/EDX combines electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis; PiFM combines AFM with optical excitation to produce force-based maps with chemical or vibrational contrast. The following throughput figures describe the workflow in the Molecular Vista-sponsored AZoM article, not universal benchmarks.

Aspect PiFM SEM/EDX
Information emphasized AFM topography and localized optical-response contrast that can carry chemical or vibrational information Electron-image morphology and elemental composition from X-ray analysis
Role in the vendor-described workflow Targeted follow-up for defects needing nanoscale chemical identification Higher-throughput classification and broad defect review
Reported workflow rate The October 5, 2026 sponsored article reports about two minutes per defect, or about 30 defects per hour, conditional on coordinate accuracy. The same article says SEM/EDX throughput is about an order of magnitude higher than the described Vista 300 automated nano-defect review workflow.
Small or organic features The vendor article presents the 15 nm Teflon and 5 nm PSL examples as use cases for chemical identification. The vendor article says very small signals and organic materials can be difficult to identify chemically by elemental analysis alone, and warns electron-beam analysis may damage small or organic defects. Outcomes depend on the sample and SEM/EDX setup.

This comparison supports a complementary workflow, not a universal ranking: use a faster method for broad screening where it answers the question, then consider PiFM for selected sites where nanoscale chemical contrast is needed. Whether that division is appropriate depends on the defect population, coordinate quality, sample condition, and information required.

Limits and how to interpret a PiFM map

Resolution depends on the experiment and setup. The approximately 10 nm result belongs to the semiconductor examples in the 2018 ISTFA paper; the sub-5 nm figure is a capability advertised for the Vista 300 in the 2026 sponsored AZoM article. Neither figure should be generalized into a universal resolution guarantee.

A PiFM map is evidence about a localized response under the measurement conditions. Interpreting it requires matching the contrast to relevant material or vibrational information and considering the sample and setup. The 2025 Nature Reviews Methods Primers overview discusses PiFM limitations and optimization; the cited semiconductor examples do not establish a complete list of error sources for every device stack.

  • Use the map to ask: Does this site show a different material response from its surroundings? Is the contrast consistent with a candidate contaminant, material boundary, or process material?
  • Do not infer from the chemical image alone: that the site caused an electrical failure, changed device performance, or contains a particular trap state.
  • For causal diagnosis: connect the chemical finding to appropriate electrical measurements and process or materials evidence.

When PiFM is a useful next step

Consider PiFM when a defect is small enough that its chemical identity matters, when a particle may be organic or otherwise difficult to classify using elemental information alone, or when two regions with similar topography may have different composition. It is less suited to replacing a high-throughput screening method when the immediate task is to classify many sites quickly. Instrument selection should follow the question: morphology, elemental makeup, molecular-scale chemical contrast, or electrical causation are not interchangeable outputs.
