Phantom Blade Zero’s combat is a continuous attack-and-defend loop, not a sequence of attacks you must finish before protecting yourself. Light attacks cost no Sha-Chi and can be interrupted to block or parry; blue enemy flashes call for a parry, while red flashes call for a dodge. Sha-Chi fuels blocking and heavy attacks, and switching your second primary weapon fully restores it, subject to a cooldown.
There is no documented high-, mid-, or low-stance wheel. In practice, your weapon’s moveset is your stance: carry two different primaries and switch between them as the fight demands. The explanation below reflects the launch version, released for PS5 and PC on 29 October 2026 (Steam lists 28 October).
How does Phantom Blade Zero combat work?
Think of a fight as a loop: pressure with free light attacks, answer the enemy’s color-coded special moves, spend heavy attacks when there is an opening, and swap weapons if your Sha-Chi is running low. The defining rule is that you can move from attacking to defending without waiting for most attack animations to finish. You are not meant to stand back and wait your turn.

That design matches S-GAME director and CEO Soulframe Liang’s description to GameSpot: the combat aims to make attacking and defending happen together, as they do in the kung-fu films that inspired it. It does not mean every action is equally safe at every moment. You still have to read the incoming attack, choose the right answer, and manage the shared Sha-Chi gauge.

For ordinary attacks, use light strikes to keep pressure on an enemy and chip away at its Sha-Chi. They cost no Sha-Chi. Heavy attacks—also described as Sha-Chi combos—cost Sha-Chi but deal more damage and break an opponent’s gauge faster. A successful defense can create room to use a heavy attack, and a broken enemy is especially vulnerable.
In launch coverage, reviewers describe the feel as a blend of character-action combat and color-cued defense. It is not simply a matter of waiting for a parry prompt: lights and dodges are free, attack strings are generally interruptible, and swapping weapons is part of resource management. The mechanics matter most against elites and bosses; ordinary enemies may not demand the same precision, particularly on lower difficulties.
What do blue and red attacks mean?
Blue means parry; red means dodge. Blue attacks are called Brutal Moves and should be answered with a timed parry. Red attacks are Killer Moves and cannot be blocked or parried; dodge them, ideally with a last-moment Ghoststep. Remember: red is right, blue is left—right bumper for red, left bumper for blue on a controller.
| Enemy cue | What to do | What can go wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Blue flash (Brutal Move) | Time a parry: L1 / left bumper on a controller. | Blocking is possible, but drains a large amount of Sha-Chi. A badly missed parry can knock you down. |
| Red flash (Killer Move) | Dodge with R1 / right bumper; a precise dodge can trigger Ghoststep. | You cannot block or parry it. If you stay in its path, you take the hit. |
| Smoky black cue or a darkened screen | Dodge rather than block. | Blocking preserves very little Sha-Chi, which can leave you vulnerable to a follow-up guard break. |
| Phantom Edge prompt on an enemy | Use the prompted Edge attack; the launch tips identify RT as the common controller prompt. | Ignoring a free-use opening can mean spending a limited spark later instead. |
The distinction between “can” and “should” matters on blue attacks. Some older demo descriptions said blue moves had to be parried. Launch coverage from GameSpot, RPGamer, and AUTOMATON WEST says you can block one, but it is an expensive fallback because holding block drains your gauge. A timed block against an ordinary attack can count as a parry; holding block continuously is not the same thing and keeps costing Sha-Chi.
For a quick reaction mnemonic, PC Gamer’s launch advice is to hit both bumpers if you cannot decide in time. That is an emergency shortcut, not a substitute for learning the colors: a red move still requires a dodge, and a blue move gives you the better Sha-Chi trade when you parry it correctly.
How do you parry and use Ghoststep?
Use a parry for blue attacks and ordinary attacks you can read; use Ghoststep to evade a red attack at the last moment. A successful answer can turn defense into offense, but Ghoststep is not simply a panic roll and there are no published launch frame windows to memorize.
On a controller, the common launch overlays place parry on L1 or the left bumper and the red dodge/Ghoststep response on R1 or the right bumper. The exact prompt can vary with platform, control remapping, or the on-screen layout, so check the game’s controls menu rather than assuming a keyboard key from a guide applies to your setup. The game has a separate ordinary dodge or roll as well; do not confuse that with the color-cued counter input.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A successful blue parry damages the attacker’s Sha-Chi and can leave it open. A precise red dodge can carry Soul behind or through the attacker, creating an angle for a follow-up. RPGamer describes successful counters as refilling Soul’s Sha-Chi as well. That combination—defense, repositioning, and an opening—is why the game rewards responding to the cue rather than backing away from every attack.

Do not import Sekiro habits without adjustment. The color-coded defense may look familiar, but red Killer Moves are un-parryable in this system. Treating every red flash as a parry opportunity is a reliable way to get hit. Read the color first, then time the correct response. No official launch source gives a numeric parry or Ghoststep window, so claims such as a fixed number of frames should not be treated as established guidance.
What is Sha-Chi, and what happens when it runs out?
Sha-Chi is a combat resource shared by you and your enemy. Your gauge pays for held blocking and heavy attacks; the opponent’s gauge is worn down by pressure and especially by successful parries. If your own gauge reaches zero, your guard breaks—you are breached and exposed. If the enemy’s gauge empties, its guard breaks and it becomes easier to punish.
That makes Sha-Chi both a defensive budget and an offensive target. A light string lets you keep attacking without spending your own gauge while still chipping the opponent’s. Heavy attacks spend your gauge to break the other side more quickly. A correct blue parry is valuable because it avoids treating defense as a long drain and attacks the enemy’s posture in the process.

When your gauge is low, do not assume that holding block is a safe way to wait it out. Use a correctly timed defense, dodge a red move, or switch to your other primary when the swap is available. A launch review in AUTOMATON WEST likened the two equipped weapons to two stamina bars taking turns; GameSpot and RPGamer likewise report that switching fully restores Sha-Chi, with a cooldown.
Are there player stances or a stance button?
No dedicated high/mid/low stance toggle is documented for the launch game. Here, “stance” is best understood as the martial-arts posture and animation embodied by a weapon’s moveset, or as the enemy’s posture that you are trying to break—not as a player stance wheel.
S-GAME’s Steam description says each strike and stance draws on real martial techniques. That describes the game’s martial-arts presentation, not an instruction to press a stance-switch button. In practical play, changing weapons is the closest thing to changing stance: a nimble blade has different timing and uses from a heavy two-hander, and the swap also restores Sha-Chi.
Launch coverage groups primary weapons into dual-wield, one-handed, and two-handed categories. Other weapons and previews include spears or glaives, soft swords, chakrams, fists or hammers, and arm cannons. Treat these as different tools rather than assuming every weapon fits a single stance chart. Weapons have their own abilities, and upgrading them can change the options available; PC Gamer reports that a new weapon ability arrives every five upgrade levels.
There is also an enemy-side meaning of posture. When an enemy’s Sha-Chi is depleted, its guard breaks, reducing its ability to keep up pressure and opening it to more damage. Reviews sometimes describe that as breaking an enemy’s stance. It is not evidence of a separate player stance system.

How should you build combos?
Start a string with free lights, answer an incoming special move, and use a heavy when the opening or your resource level justifies it. Alternating light and heavy attacks is the basic combo grammar; you do not have to commit to a whole string before defending.
- Pressure with lights. Light attacks cost no Sha-Chi, deal damage, and chip away at the enemy’s gauge. They are a low-cost way to stay active.
- Interrupt to defend. If a cue appears mid-string, switch to the appropriate block/parry or dodge response. GameSpot’s launch review notes that switching to defense is instantaneous, even during a combo, and that attacks generally do not lock Soul into an animation until they finish.
- Use heavies deliberately. Heavy or Sha-Chi combo attacks cost your gauge but deal more damage and break the opponent’s gauge faster. They are especially useful after a successful color response or when the enemy is already guard-broken.
- Resume pressure when safe. Launch coverage describes combos that can often continue after a parry. The point is not to complete a memorized string at all costs; it is to keep the attack-defend rhythm while reacting to the opponent.
Heavy attacks also build Sha-Chi Essence, which fuels a weapon-specific Power Surge. A Surge may be a buff or a committed burst, depending on the weapon. GameSpot reports that some are powerful combos that cannot be canceled, so do not treat the Surge input like another risk-free light attack. Save it for a stagger, a guard break, or a moment when a boss is committed to a long recovery. A phase transition can also be a better opportunity than spending it immediately when the gauge fills.
Phantom Edges fit into this rhythm as limited-use secondary weapons, not as a third primary moveset. You equip two, and using them normally spends Remnant Sparks. Bells replenish those sparks. Launch coverage describes options including shield-breaking axes, ranged tools, chained weapons, flying blades, and a bell that summons puppets. Some low-health enemies offer a prompted free Edge use or an execution opportunity; take the free prompt when it appears rather than spending a spark unnecessarily.
Why does switching weapons restore Sha-Chi?
Switching your active primary does two jobs: it gives you another moveset and fully refills your Sha-Chi, subject to a cooldown. The refill makes the two-weapon loadout a core combat mechanic, not just a way to carry two styles for variety.
Equip two weapons you can actually use, because bosses can drain or break your gauge quickly. A practical pairing is a fast, cancelable blade for pressure and Sha-Chi generation, plus a heavier breaker or a weapon with a useful status effect. Swap when your gauge is depleted or when the second weapon is better suited to the opening—not so often that you forget how either moveset works. Weapon swapping can be done mid-combo; common overlays use the D-pad or number keys, but check the control menu for your bindings.
There is no single mandatory pairing. A parry-oriented weapon can suit a boss that repeatedly gives blue cues; mobility and a reliable swap refill can matter more in a fight dominated by red attacks or grabs. Heavy weapons spend Sha-Chi to break an enemy more quickly, while fast weapons are easier to use for sustained pressure. AUTOMATON WEST, PC Gamer, and RPGamer all recommend mixing weapon types rather than relying on two identical approaches. PC Gamer also notes that different weapon types use separate upgrade materials, so variety can be an upgrade-economy choice as well as a combat one.
One early option often singled out by PC Gamer is Jagged Steel, a first-boss drop. Its Blood Blade effect builds bleed, with upgrades adding bleed-oriented abilities and damage. The weapon’s listed milestones include a special against guard-broken enemies at Level 5, increased bleed at Level 10, a charged slash that banks stacks at Level 15, and further bleed at Level 20. Its left-trigger flurry can help apply bleed. There are limits: the effect is weak against Puppets, Golden Bodies, and Phantom Bodies until the Livingwood Talisman is obtained from a chest near Smuggler’s Tunnel in the Village of Lu. The talisman enables bleed against those enemy types at 50%, which can be polished to 70%, according to PC Gamer. That makes Jagged Steel a useful example of a weapon identity, not a universal best pick.

GameSpot describes the Outlaw Warblade as spending HP on heavy attacks and restoring it with lights. The Drunken Sword builds Drunken Energy and uses a more unorthodox style. Soft Snake can bind a guard but is less suited to fights where Ghoststep mobility is important. These are examples of trade-offs, not a ranking of the whole arsenal.

What should you equip in the four weapon slots?
Every fight gives you two primary slots and two Phantom Edge slots. A balanced starting setup gives you different answers to different problems, rather than four ways to do the same thing.
- Primary A: a fast one-handed sword or dual-wield weapon for free light pressure and a move set you can cancel out of readily.
- Primary B: a heavier breaker, a status weapon such as Jagged Steel, or a boss-specific option.
- Phantom Edge A: a shield-breaking or crowd-control tool.
- Phantom Edge B: a ranged option or a tool useful for traversal and reaching paths.
Avoid pairing two slow, highly committed heavies if you are relying on weapon swaps to keep your pressure going. The swap refill will still help the gauge, but it will not make an awkward moveset combination feel quick. Conversely, two fast weapons may leave you without the heavier answer you want for a stubborn guard. Adjust for the boss instead of treating one loadout as correct for the whole campaign.
Upgrade choices are not entirely irreversible. PC Gamer reports that weapon-material refunds are free through Level 10; beyond that, a reforge talisman is needed. Upgrades also grant a new ability every five levels. AUTOMATON WEST notes that accessories are a more lasting investment, so consider whether an accessory’s effect supports the weapon pair you expect to use before polishing it. There are no saved loadout presets noted in launch coverage, so changing a full kit in menus can take time.

|---|---|---|
| Light attack | X | Square |
| Heavy / Sha-Chi combo | Y | Triangle |

| Phantom Edge | RT | R2 |
| Lock-on | Varies by layout | R3 on common overlays |
| Switch primary | D-pad or mapped input | D-pad or mapped input |
PC overlays may instead show mouse buttons, keyboard keys, or number keys for weapon switching; do not assume a guide’s key labels match your setup. If you are playing on PC, use the controls menu to confirm or remap the inputs you need most—particularly the two defensive responses and primary swap. Having those mappings clear is more useful than trying to memorize an overlay for another platform.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How does difficulty change the combat?
The launch difficulty choices are Wayfarer, Pathbreaker, and Hellwalker, with 66 Days as a separate, more punishing mode. Pathbreaker is presented as the intended default. Hellwalker adds pressure through boss skills, patterns, and adaptive behavior; 66 Days combines the Hellwalker challenge with a 66-death permadeath clock and is save-locked.
Reviews describe different experiences against ordinary enemies and bosses. GameSpot found regular enemies comparatively easy even on the hardest everyday tier, but found some bosses demanding enough to lower the difficulty for. IGN, playing on the hardest difficulty, reported clearing most bosses in two or three attempts. Those reports are not contradictory: the game’s ordinary encounters and its bosses test the combat system differently, and the color reads, gauge management, and weapon swaps matter most when a boss keeps applying pressure.
Difficulty can be changed later except for 66 Days, which is tied to its own save. If you are learning the cues, starting on Pathbreaker gives you the intended baseline without committing to the permadeath mode. If a fight is frustrating, adjusting difficulty is a valid option; the core lesson remains to identify the attack color before choosing a defense.

What should you do if combat feels unresponsive?
First distinguish a missed input from a performance problem. The game has no published numeric parry or Ghoststep window, so a guide cannot tell you an exact frame count. If hits or cues seem inconsistent, confirm your control bindings, check that the display is running smoothly, and make sure the game is installed on an SSD on PC.
IGN reported a map with consistently poor frame rate, while describing combat as steadier than in preview builds. That is a source-specific performance observation, not proof that every timing issue is caused by hardware. On PS5, check whether Performance mode is selected if available in your settings. On PC, compare your system with S-GAME’s published requirements: 16 GB RAM minimum and an SSD installation are listed, with 145 GB available space. Lower performance can make reaction cues harder to read, but it does not change which color calls for which response.
In groups, another challenge is target selection rather than timing. AUTOMATON WEST and PC Gamer note that lock-on switching can be awkward in crowds. Prioritize ranged threats on higher difficulty, avoid mashing into spiked-shield enemies that reflect melee, and use stealth assassinations where they safely remove a threat or chain to a nearby enemy. Bells restock medicine and Edge sparks but do not respawn enemies, so clearing a room is not undone simply by resting there.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow is Phantom Blade Zero different from Sekiro?
Both games reward reading enemy cues, but Phantom Blade Zero is not simply another parry-only duel system. Lights and dodges do not consume Sha-Chi, red Killer Moves are dodged rather than parried, and swapping weapons is a way to refill your resource and change your moveset.
Its combat also expects offense to continue around defense: you can attack, interrupt to answer a cue, and often return to the string. That makes the core skill less about waiting for one perfect parry rhythm and more about deciding between a blue parry and a red dodge while managing pressure. Sekiro muscle memory is useful only where it helps you read an enemy; the red-versus-blue decision must take priority.
What is the simplest combat loop to practice?
Use this sequence against an elite or boss until the resource rhythm feels natural:
- Open with light attacks to deal damage and chip the enemy’s Sha-Chi without spending your own.
- When the enemy flashes blue, parry; when it flashes red, dodge. Do not block a red move.
- Use a heavy attack after a successful answer or when the enemy’s guard is broken, rather than holding the button through a dangerous exchange.
- Build Sha-Chi Essence with heavies and keep Power Surge for a clear opening, stagger, or phase transition.
- When your Sha-Chi is low and the swap is ready, change primaries to refill and continue with the second moveset.
- Use Phantom Edges when they solve a specific problem—such as a shield, a distant threat, or a crowd—or when a free-use prompt appears.
This is a teaching sequence, not an official named system or a guaranteed combo. The order changes with enemy behavior. The reliable principles are simpler: lights are cheap, heavy attacks spend your gauge, blue is parry, red is dodge, and the second weapon is part of your resource plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play Phantom Blade Zero with a keyboard and mouse?
The launch information establishes PC support but does not specify a single universal keyboard layout. Check the in-game controls menu and remap the color-counter and weapon-switch inputs if the displayed bindings do not suit you; the developers recommend a controller.
Does Phantom Blade Zero have official parry frame data?
No official numeric parry or Ghoststep window is published in the launch information. Treat exact frame counts circulating in guides as unverified unless they cite a later official source.
Are all weapons good against every enemy type?
No weapon effect is universally effective. For example, PC Gamer reports that Jagged Steel’s bleed is weak against several body types until you obtain the Livingwood Talisman, so check a weapon’s status interaction before building your whole approach around it.
Can I change my weapon upgrades if I regret them?
PC Gamer reports that weapon-material refunds are free up to Level 10; after that, you need a reforge talisman. That refund rule concerns weapon materials, so it should not be confused with fully undoing every accessory investment.
