Oscilloscope analysis tools improve power analysis by automating repeatable measurements, guiding setup, aligning voltage and current waveforms through probe deskew, and organizing results into reports. They do not make an inaccurate measurement chain accurate by themselves: results still depend on the oscilloscope, probes, fixtures, calibration, wiring, and test conditions.

What power-analysis software changes

Without dedicated analysis software, engineers may need to configure the oscilloscope, capture waveforms, calculate measurements, and assemble results manually. Oscilloscope applications can guide setup and automate selected calculations, making it easier to repeat a procedure and compare results across tests. Some also generate reports, trend plots, or batch measurements.

The available functions depend on the software and supported oscilloscope family. Tektronix documents TDSPWR3 for switching-device and magnetic-component loss, ripple and noise, harmonics, safe operating area (SOA), precompliance, modulation, and report generation. Its power-distribution-network (PDN) material describes Digital Power Management software for ripple, overshoot, undershoot, turn-on, turn-off, settling time, and jitter; its PWR software covers power quality, harmonics, switching loss, magnetic analysis, frequency response, power-supply rejection ratio (PSRR), and impedance (Tektronix power analysis software; Tektronix PDN solution).

Rohde & Schwarz lists guided setup functions for its K31 option, including autoset, a power wizard, automated deskew using the RT-ZF20 fixture, customizable reports, inrush-current measurements, output spectrum, and SOA measurements (R&S K31 power analysis). These are documented product capabilities, not a guarantee that a particular test will be faster or more accurate under every setup.

Choose tools by the measurement you need

“Power analysis” can mean very different work, from checking a converter’s switching loss to finding noise on a processor’s supply rail. Match the software and probes to the engineering question rather than choosing by feature count alone.

Engineering task Relevant measurements or functions What to verify
Switching devices and magnetics Switching loss, magnetic-component loss, modulation, frequency response Whether the application supports the device, topology, and measurement method you use
Supply output and power quality Ripple and noise, harmonics, inrush current, output spectrum, overshoot, undershoot, settling time, jitter Required bandwidth, noise floor, current range, and the software’s supported measurement set
Device operating limits and precompliance SOA and precompliance analysis How the software defines and displays the measurement, and whether the test setup matches your applicable limits
Power integrity and PDN Rail integrity, sequencing, PSRR, control-loop response, and PDN impedance Whether the oscilloscope, rail probe, current probe, and software cover the signal and frequency ranges involved

Keysight frames power-integrity analysis around PDN impedance, power-rail integrity, sequencing, PSRR, and control-loop response. Its described solution combines a low-noise real-time oscilloscope, specialized power-rail probe, high-sensitivity current probe, and Power Integrity Analysis software; it also describes analyzing rail-noise sources and effects (Keysight power integrity analysis). A switchable-sensitivity current probe is also described for battery-consumption analysis (Keysight current probes).

Build a measurement chain, not just a software list

A credible oscilloscope power measurement typically uses an oscilloscope, a voltage probe suited to the signal, a current probe, and software compatible with that oscilloscope. For power-rail work, a specialized low-noise rail probe may be appropriate. Switching measurements can call for a differential voltage probe to measure across a device or component while managing common-mode voltage. Probe choice must follow the voltage, current, bandwidth, connection, and safety requirements of the test.

  • Oscilloscope: Check bandwidth, noise floor, ADC resolution, available channels, and whether its measurement functions and software options support the intended analysis.
  • Voltage probe: Confirm differential or single-ended suitability, voltage rating, bandwidth, loading, and common-mode range. For rail measurements, check offset range and noise performance.
  • Current probe: Match AC/DC capability, current range, sensitivity, bandwidth, offset behavior, and connector to the waveform and oscilloscope.
  • Deskew method: Verify that the scope supports probe deskew and that the necessary fixture or procedure is available for the probe combination.
  • Software: Confirm the exact supported oscilloscope family, required license or option, measurement coverage, calibration needs, and report-export functions.

Probe bandwidth, noise, loading, offset, and range can constrain the result even when the analysis software offers the desired calculation. System accuracy depends on the complete setup, including fixtures, calibration, wiring, bandwidth limits, and how the signals are acquired.

Deskew voltage and current probes before calculating power

Voltage and current probes can have different propagation delays. If the oscilloscope displays their signals at different times, multiplying voltage by current can produce a misleading instantaneous-power waveform. The timing error can affect peak-power readings and measurements based on waveform area, such as energy or loss. Tektronix explains that the oscilloscope’s deskew function compensates for this difference (Tektronix primer on oscilloscope power measurements).

  1. Use the probe pair and fixture specified for the measurement. Check the oscilloscope and probe documentation for the supported deskew method; do not assume that a procedure for one probe combination applies to another.
  2. Connect the probes to the deskew fixture or reference signal. Follow the fixture and instrument instructions so both channels observe the same timing reference.
  3. Run the oscilloscope’s deskew procedure. On systems with automated deskew, use the supported function and fixture. R&S, for example, lists automated deskew with its RT-ZF20 fixture for K31 (R&S K31 power analysis).
  4. Apply the correction and verify alignment. Inspect the reference waveforms at the time scale relevant to the measurement. Recheck when changing probes, channels, fixtures, or other setup elements covered by the instrument’s deskew procedure.
  5. Measure the actual circuit. After reconnection, check probe placement, polarity, clipping, bandwidth limits, and signal quality before trusting calculated power or energy.

Deskew corrects relative timing; it does not compensate for unsuitable probes, poor connections, calibration errors, noise, or incorrect scaling.

Compare software and instruments before committing

Vendor feature lists describe what an application can measure, but the useful choice is the one that fits the complete test system and workflow. Compare the following before purchase or setup:

  • Measurement coverage: List the measurements you actually need—such as switching loss, magnetic loss, ripple, harmonics, inrush, SOA, PSRR, control-loop response, or PDN impedance—and check that the specific software option supports them.
  • Signal integrity: Compare scope noise floor, resolution, bandwidth, probe loading, common-mode range, voltage offset, and current range against the signals to be measured.
  • Workflow: Determine whether you need autoset, guided wiring, automated deskew, batch measurements, trend plots, or report export. Confirm which functions are included in the relevant option.
  • Compatibility and ownership: Verify the supported oscilloscope family, software license or option, probe connectors, calibration requirements, and upgrade path. A feature available for one instrument family may not be available on another.

There is no substantiated cross-vendor percentage for how much these tools reduce test time or measurement error. Treat automation as a way to make supported procedures more repeatable and easier to document—not as a substitute for checking the measurement chain.
