There is no single schedule that suits every cloud workload. Test often enough to show that you can restore usable data and services within your recovery time objective (RTO) and recovery point objective (RPO), while the recovery points you need are still available. A useful starting example from NIST is to validate hourly copies daily and daily copies every two weeks to monthly; it is guidance to tailor, not a universal rule.
How often should you test cloud backups and recovery?
Set the cadence for each workload based on how important it is, how frequently it is backed up, the recovery objectives the business has accepted, and how long suitable recovery points are retained. AWS says critical resources are often tested daily or weekly, but that is AWS guidance—not a requirement for every cloud environment.
NIST SP 800-209 offers an illustrative relationship in which validation occurs around one to one-and-a-half orders of magnitude less frequently than backups. Its examples are:
| Backup frequency | Illustrative validation frequency |
|---|---|
| Hourly copies | Daily |
| Daily copies | Every two weeks to monthly |
These examples are starting points, not mandated intervals. A short retention window or a workload with little tolerance for downtime or data loss may call for more frequent tests. Schedule tests so they exercise relevant recovery points before those points expire.

Choose a cadence from recovery objectives
Define RTO and RPO for each workload
AWS defines the recovery time objective (RTO) as the acceptable delay between a service interruption and restoration. The recovery point objective (RPO) is the acceptable amount of time since the last recovery point—in practical terms, the maximum data loss the business can tolerate. AWS explains these objectives in its backup strategy guidance.
Use those targets to specify what the test must demonstrate: a working service restored within the RTO, and recovered data recent enough to meet the RPO. AWS Well-Architected guidance recommends validating the backup implementation against both objectives by performing recovery tests: REL09-BP04.

Adjust for criticality, retention, and operational cost
Test high-impact workloads more frequently when their objectives or retention windows leave little room for failure. If a full application recovery is too disruptive or expensive to repeat at every interval, define a deliberate scope: validate selected resources or components regularly, then run broader application-level exercises as needed. Microsoft’s backup and recovery guidance says to define the scope, frequency, and method because full recovery testing each time can be difficult.
Make the schedule repeatable, and add a test after material changes to backup configuration, encryption or access, application dependencies, or recovery procedures. These are practical triggers for checking that the recovery process still works as designed.

What counts as a real restore test?
A successful backup job proves that a job completed; it does not prove that the resulting recovery point can restore usable data or a functioning service. A meaningful test restores actual backup data using the established recovery procedure, then checks the result. Google Cloud identifies three core criteria: data integrity, achieved RTO, and achieved RPO. Its guidance also recommends testing in a non-production environment and including the application stack and critical infrastructure: Perform testing for recovery from data loss.
- Integrity and usability: Check that expected data is present, uncorrupted, accessible, and usable. Where possible, query or retrieve data rather than relying on a restore job’s completion status.
- RTO: Record elapsed time from the start of recovery to the point the service is usable, then compare it with the workload’s target.
- RPO: Identify the newest recovered record or item and compare its timestamp with the acceptable recovery point.
- Application recovery: Test the application and its critical infrastructure dependencies against the restored data, not just the storage restore.
AWS similarly recommends periodic restores to a new location and checks for availability, integrity, accessibility, RPO, and RTO. It warns against assuming a backup exists, assuming it is operational, or restoring without checking that data can actually be retrieved: AWS Well-Architected recovery testing.

Run the test safely and keep useful evidence
Use an isolated or non-production destination for routine validation when feasible. Control access to production data, and include the keys, credentials, networking, and dependencies needed to perform recovery. Use the same recovery mechanism as production, or an equivalent procedure close enough to provide meaningful timings.
For each exercise, record:
- the workload and recovery point tested;
- start and end times, including when the service became usable;
- integrity, accessibility, and application checks performed;
- the measured recovery point compared with the RPO, and elapsed recovery time compared with the RTO;
- issues found and how the test environment and restored resources were cleaned up.
AWS Backup offers scheduled restore-testing plans with configurable frequency and start time, monitors restore duration, and can optionally support validation. Its documentation says test resources are deleted after the validation window completes. Check current resource support and service behavior before relying on it: AWS Backup restore testing.

Include ransomware recovery in the exercise
A recovery test should consider whether backups remain available and intact in a disaster scenario, including one in which production credentials or infrastructure are compromised. CISA recommends offline, encrypted backups for critical data and regular tests of backup availability and integrity in its #StopRansomware Guide. A successful exercise provides evidence about the recovery path tested; it does not prove immunity to every attack.
