For U.S. highway bridges covered by the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS), installing sensors does not replace required inspections or automatically change their frequency. Under the standard Method 1 schedule, routine inspections generally occur no more than 24 months apart; specified serious condition or scour ratings require intervals no longer than 12 months. Longer intervals are possible only when the applicable risk-based method, agency policy, and bridge-specific criteria allow them.
Do bridge sensors replace inspections?
No. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) says proven advanced technologies may supplement—but not supplant—bridge inspection personnel and inspection methods. Sensors do not replace visual and physical methods. They may help assess components that conventional access cannot fully evaluate, or make an inspection more efficient when thoroughness and effectiveness are maintained. FHWA’s NBIS inspection-procedures Q&A explains this distinction.
A sensor feed is additional information, not proof that a bridge is safe. FHWA’s inspection rules do not establish one universal sensor-reading frequency or alert threshold that substitutes for an inspection; those details belong in the bridge-specific monitoring plan and owner procedures, guided by responsible engineering judgment.
How often are U.S. NBIS-covered highway bridges inspected?
The NBIS applies to safety inspections of highway bridges on public roads in the United States. The schedule depends on the inspection method, condition, risk, and inspection type—not simply on whether sensors are installed. Check the bridge owner’s policy and the requirements of the relevant state, federal, tribal, or local jurisdiction. The federal baseline is not a worldwide rule. See the FHWA NBIS overview.

Routine inspections under Method 1
Under the standard Method 1 approach, a regular routine inspection generally may not be more than 24 months after the previous one. Agencies may set shorter intervals based on risk and documented policy. The 24-month figure is a regulatory maximum for the regular interval, not a finding that every bridge is suitable for that schedule. The governing interval framework is in the 2022 NBIS final rule.
Specified serious condition or scour ratings
Under Method 1, a bridge with one or more specified deck, superstructure, substructure, culvert, or scour ratings coded 3 or less must be inspected at intervals no longer than 12 months. If a serious rating results from a localized deficiency, the regulation allows a special inspection focused on that deficiency in lieu of inspecting the whole bridge, subject to its conditions. Sensors do not waive these requirements.

When a longer interval may be allowed
The regulation permits risk-based methods and categories that can support extended routine intervals, but an agency must satisfy the applicable policy and classification requirements. Sensor installation alone does not establish eligibility. For a new, rehabilitated, or structurally modified bridge, FHWA guidance says an initial inspection must occur, the bridge must have been in service for at least 24 months, and its next routine inspection must be completed before an interval longer than 24 months can be established. See the FHWA interval guidance memorandum.
Inspection due dates and other required inspection types
Scheduling tolerance is not a new routine interval
NBIS scheduling tolerance allows up to two months after the due month for intervals shorter than 24 months, and up to three months after the due month for intervals of 24 months or more. Rare and unusual exceptions require advance FHWA approval. This flexibility is for completing a scheduled inspection; it is not a recommended recurring extension. FHWA warns that repeatedly using tolerance can cause schedule creep. See the FHWA inspection-interval Q&A.

Routine is only one inspection category
Underwater, nonredundant steel tension member (NSTM), damage, in-depth, and special inspections have their own requirements. Owners establish intervals for each required inspection type based on the regulation and findings; a routine schedule does not answer how often every other inspection must occur.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What sensors can change in practice
Sensor readings can add observations, support decisions about further evaluation or repairs, and help identify when additional inspection is warranted. They do not create an automatic longer or shorter inspection schedule: the cited FHWA rules and guidance establish inspection intervals based on the applicable method, bridge condition, risk, and inspection category, not on sensor installation by itself.

What determines a particular bridge’s schedule?
- Jurisdiction: which inspection program and owner policy apply.
- Inspection type: routine, underwater, NSTM, damage, in-depth, or special.
- Condition and risk: ratings, scour findings, known deficiencies, and the bridge’s risk classification.
- Interval method: whether the agency has a documented policy and the bridge meets criteria for an extended interval.
- Bridge history: whether it is new, rehabilitated, or structurally modified, which can affect eligibility for an extended interval.
