As of October 2, 2026, 18 NHL goaltenders had been credited with 21 goals: 19 in the regular season and two in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The total is cumulative; the NHL’s historical account does not establish a rate per game or season. The latest goal in that account was Igor Shesterkin’s on October 1, 2026.
How a goaltender can be credited with a goal
A goalie does not need to shoot the puck into the opposing net to receive credit. The NHL describes two routes:
- Direct shot: The goaltender shoots the puck into an empty net.
- Last teammate to touch the puck: The goalie is the last player on their team to touch it before an opponent accidentally puts it into their own net.
In its October 2, 2026 account, NHL.com says 12 goaltenders scored by shooting into an empty net; Ron Hextall did so twice. The other eight goals were credited through an opponent’s own goal after the goalie’s last touch. NHL.com’s event-by-event history describes the scoring events.

The NHL Records site recognizes goaltender scoring as a record category and labels its displayed coverage 1917–18 to 2025–26: NHL Records.
Milestones and unusual goalie goals
Billy Smith: first goalie credited with a goal
Smith was credited with the first NHL goaltender goal in 1979. During a delayed penalty, he touched the puck; a pass by Colorado defenseman Rob Ramage then went into an empty net. Smith’s team lost the game.

Brodeur’s three credited goals are the most by a goaltender in the NHL account. His 2013 goal followed an errant pass that went into the net while Carolina goalie Dan Ellis was returning from the bench during a delayed penalty. NHL.com describes it as the only instance of one goalie scoring against another.

How often does it happen?
The available NHL account gives the cumulative totals—21 goals by 18 goalies, including 19 regular-season goals and two playoff goals—but does not give the number of goalie appearances or another denominator needed to calculate a frequency. Those totals therefore answer how many goals have been credited, not the odds of a goalie scoring in a particular game or season.
