Offensive-line blocking shapes the lanes, angles and time a running back gets, but it does not determine the final gain by itself. Scheme, each blocker’s assignment, the defense and the runner’s decisions all affect what happens on a carry. That is why neither rushing yards nor a simple before-contact/after-contact split can assign credit cleanly.

What blocking changes on a running play

A run is coordinated work by all 11 offensive players, not just a handoff and a race. The offensive line’s rules depend on the play design. Inside zone and duo, for example, can attack similar areas while asking linemen to use different assignments. Pulling guards can be a clue to concepts such as power, counter, sweep or pin-pull.

The lane the play is designed to create is not always the lane the runner uses. A back may find a different gap when the intended one closes; a defender may penetrate before the blocking develops. NFL Next Gen Stats’ 2026 account of its run-analysis metrics describes identifying run concepts, intended and actual gaps, blocking assignments, block types and engagement timing.

One lost matchup can outweigh several successful blocks

Blocking is both individual work and a collective result. Four blockers can execute their assignments while one defender beats a matchup and disrupts the play. The reverse can happen, too: a runner can evade immediate penetration and salvage a gain from a design that broke down. Blocking changes the likelihood and shape of the opportunity; the runner’s response helps determine the final yardage.

Why rushing totals do not explain who produced the yards

Rushing yards and yards per carry record the result, not how it came about. Traditional box scores do not identify the run concept, each player’s assignment or the matchup that opened—or destroyed—the lane. A high total by itself is not proof that a line dominated, just as a modest total alone does not establish that the back ran poorly.

There is no universal percentage that can be assigned to the line or the back from the evidence here. Production is shared across scheme, blocking, defensive response and the runner’s vision, speed, balance and ability to break tackles. It is more useful to examine these factors together than to treat any one stat as a final verdict.

How to interpret the common rushing metrics

Metric What it describes What it cannot establish by itself
Yards before contact How far the runner travels before first defensive contact. It is not pure offensive-line production. A block may create a lane that lets the runner build momentum before contact.
Yards after contact Yardage gained after the runner first encounters a defender. It is not a clean measure of the back alone; blocking may have helped the runner reach contact at speed.
Expected rushing yards (xRY) NFL Next Gen Stats defines this as expected yards on a carry based on the relative location, speed and direction of blockers and defenders. It is a model of the carry’s context, not a direct measurement of individual causal responsibility.
Rushing yards over expected (RYOE) Actual rushing yards minus expected rushing yards, for a play or group of plays. It shows performance relative to modeled expectations, not which person caused the difference.

NFL Next Gen Stats explains xRY and RYOE in its overview of advanced metrics for the 2026 season. They add context beyond raw yardage, but they do not create a perfect division of credit between line and runner.

Pro Football Focus reported an average of 1.5 yards before contact per rush attempt for the 2019 attempts discussed in a March 2020 article. That is a historical, specifically scoped figure—not a current league average. PFF’s author Sam Monson cautioned that it is too simple to call yards before contact blocking yardage and yards after contact running-back yardage in his discussion of running-back production.

How to compare a running back, line or team

For a fair comparison, use the same season and similar play situations where possible. Compare the factors that shape the opportunity as well as the final result:

  • Scheme and assignments: Identify the run concept, intended gap and gap the runner actually hits.
  • Yards before contact: Use it to describe the carry, not as a stand-alone grade of the line.
  • xRY and RYOE: Use expected yardage to account for the modeled blocking and defensive context, and RYOE to compare the actual result with that expectation.
  • Situation and defense: Compare carries with similar down, distance and defensive-box or defender situations where that information is available.
  • The runner’s response: Consider decisions, speed, balance and yards gained after encountering defenders.

When evaluating a line, do not rely on the back’s raw rushing total alone. When evaluating a back, do not attribute every yard before contact to blockers or every yard after contact to the runner.
