New York City residents with a 120V plug-in air conditioner may be able to get a program-supplied powerbank through Every Electric’s A/C-Powerbank program, which is linked to Con Edison demand response. The battery helps run the AC while reducing the home’s draw from the grid during peak periods; it is not a solar system or a battery that sends household electricity back to the grid. Eligibility, rewards, deposits and enrollment capacity can change, so check the terms shown for your address before signing up.
What the NYC AC battery program does
Every Electric’s A/C-Powerbank program supplies a managed powerbank for an eligible air conditioner. During periods of high electricity demand, the system can use the battery to help power the AC and reduce how much electricity the home draws from the grid. The Associated Press reported on May 7, 2026, that the battery does not export household power to the grid.
Every Electric CEO Andrew Wang described it to the AP as “a souped up version of the power bank that you would use to charge your phone when you go out.” In practice, it is a program device intended to work with an AC, not a general-purpose home backup battery or a replacement for rooftop solar.
Who may qualify
Every Electric’s FAQ lists three current eligibility conditions: someone in the household must have an active Con Edison account, the home must use a plug-in air conditioner, and the home must have Wi-Fi. The company says the program supports 120V window, portable, through-wall and many PTAC units. Check your address through Every Electric’s enrollment flow: availability may be limited by location or seasonal capacity.

- PTAC: Every Electric says many PTAC units work; compatibility is not universal.
The program is not described as applying to every air conditioner. If your unit is hardwired, has a different voltage or plug, or does not fit the supported equipment criteria, confirm compatibility directly during address screening before enrolling.
How to sign up and connect the powerbank
- Check your address and account. Use Every Electric’s A/C-Powerbank enrollment process to see whether your home is served and whether enrollment is open. Have the active Con Edison account information available.
- Confirm your AC and plan terms. Check that your unit is a supported 120V plug-in model, and review the selected plan for any deposit, reward and seasonal participation terms. Do not assume every plan has identical terms.
- Connect the equipment. Every Electric’s instructions are to plug the AC into the powerbank, plug the powerbank into the wall, and connect the system to Wi-Fi.
- Let the system manage participation. The company says the device shifts usage automatically. Review the current program information for how participation and rewards are handled for the season you join.
Is it really free, and how much can participants earn?
Every Electric’s FAQ describes participation as completely free, and its how-it-works page advertises rewards of up to $150 per AC for a season (Every Electric, 2026). However, the company’s current homepage also presents plan distinctions, including an Essential path with a refundable deposit. Before accepting an offer, check the exact plan selected, whether money is due upfront, how and when a deposit is returned, and what qualifies for a reward. The maximum advertised amount is not a guaranteed payment to every participant.

The AP reported on May 7, 2026, that one participant received a $100 gift card and said rewards were roughly equivalent to a July electric bill. That is one participant’s reported experience, not a standard payout promise or proof that every enrollee receives a gift card.
Payment methods and amounts are program terms that may change. Confirm the current reward schedule and payment method in the enrollment terms rather than relying on a prior season’s payout.

What the 2026 pilot numbers mean
In reporting dated May 7, 2026, the Associated Press said the pilot was expanding with a target of more than 1,000 participating homes. The AP also reported the company’s comparison of about 200 kilowatts of flexible capacity in the prior year with roughly 2 megawatts for summer 2026. These are reported program-scale figures and a summer 2026 target; they do not establish the number of homes ultimately enrolled or guarantee that a particular address can join.
Will the battery keep the AC running during a blackout?
The available program descriptions explain peak-demand use, not how long the device powers an AC during an outage or whether it is designed to provide backup power. Do not treat outage operation, runtime or uninterrupted cooling as guaranteed. If backup during a blackout matters, ask Every Electric what the specific device and plan support before enrolling.

How this differs from free-air-conditioner assistance
Every Electric’s program supplies a powerbank to help manage electricity use; it is separate from public benefits that may provide an air conditioner or fan to eligible households.

Receiving an AC through HEAP or the Essential Plan Cooling Program does not by itself enroll a household in Every Electric. These programs have different eligibility rules and application processes.

- Whether your address is currently eligible and enrollment is open, rather than waitlisted or at capacity.
- Whether your exact AC model, voltage, plug and configuration are compatible.
- Whether the selected plan requires a refundable deposit and the conditions and timing for its return.
- The current seasonal reward maximum, eligibility conditions and payment method.
- Whether the powerbank provides any outage support, and what that support covers.
