Nuri (KSLV-II) is South Korea’s three-stage orbital rocket, designed to place a 1.5-ton-class practical satellite into a 600–800 km sun-synchronous orbit (SSO). SpaceX’s Falcon 9 is a reusable, two-stage vehicle designed for a much broader range of missions, while Firefly Aerospace’s Alpha offers a useful small-launch comparison. Their published payload figures target different orbits, so they cannot be treated as a like-for-like ranking.

How Nuri, Falcon 9 and Alpha differ at a glance

Vehicle Architecture Published payload capability What the comparison shows
Nuri (KSLV-II) Three stages; Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) describes the vehicle as a domestic Korean launch vehicle. 1.5-ton-class practical satellite to 600–800 km SSO, according to KARI’s vehicle overview. A national orbital launcher with a stated capability centered on SSO missions.
Falcon 9 Two stages; SpaceX describes it as reusable. Not included here: the SpaceX page cited describes the vehicle but does not provide a payload figure matched to Nuri’s target orbit. A reusable commercial vehicle designed to carry people and payloads to Earth orbit and beyond, not a small-launcher peer.
Alpha Two stages, according to Firefly’s Payload User’s Guide, version 5.2 (2025). 630 kg to 500 km SSO; 1,030 kg to 300 km low Earth orbit (LEO), according to the same guide. A small-launch comparison with two orbit-specific performance figures.

These are published capability statements, not the results of a common test. The destination orbit matters: SSO and LEO are not interchangeable labels, and payload capacity changes with mission conditions. For that reason, Nuri’s SSO figure cannot be directly ranked against Alpha’s lower-altitude LEO figure, and the available SpaceX description does not support a matched numerical comparison. (KARI: Korean Launch Vehicle NURI; SpaceX: Falcon 9; Firefly: Alpha Payload User’s Guide, version 5.2)

What Nuri’s payload figure means

KARI’s overview describes Nuri as capable of delivering a 1.5-ton-class practical satellite to an SSO at an altitude of 600–800 km. This is the appropriate headline figure to use when describing Nuri’s stated mission capability; it is not a universal payload limit for every orbit or mission configuration. KARI also gives the vehicle’s length as approximately 47.2 m and total mass as 200 tonnes. Its English overview lists conflicting diameter values, so diameter is omitted here. (KARI: Korean Launch Vehicle NURI)

Is Nuri a small launch vehicle?

“Small launch vehicle” is a market and mission category, not a precise description of every rocket that is smaller than Falcon 9. Nuri is best described by its role and stated capability: South Korea’s three-stage orbital launcher, with a published 1.5-ton-class satellite capability to 600–800 km SSO. Alpha is a more direct small-launch example in this comparison because Firefly’s guide gives its payload capacities for specific orbits. Falcon 9 is a separate class of comparison: SpaceX presents it as a reusable vehicle for transporting people and payloads to orbit and beyond. (KARI: Korean Launch Vehicle NURI; Firefly: Alpha Payload User’s Guide, version 5.2; SpaceX: Falcon 9)

Why the rockets’ designs matter

Nuri: three stages and a national program role

KARI identifies Nuri as a three-stage vehicle within South Korea’s launch-vehicle program. The agency says repeated launches through 2027 are intended to strengthen reliability and support technology transfer to industry. Those are program goals, not evidence that the planned outcomes are already complete. (KARI: Launch Vehicle)

Falcon 9: two stages and reusability

SpaceX describes Falcon 9 as a reusable, two-stage rocket built to transport people and payloads to Earth orbit and beyond. This reusability is a defining architectural contrast with the descriptions of Nuri and Alpha in the sources used here. It does not, by itself, establish a comparable payload figure, launch price, or mission schedule. (SpaceX: Falcon 9)

Alpha: a small-launch comparison with orbit-specific figures

Firefly’s version 5.2 guide lists Alpha as a two-stage vehicle and states capacities of 630 kg to 500 km SSO and 1,030 kg to 300 km LEO. The guide’s excerpt does not establish a recovery or reuse feature, so none should be inferred from the stage count. (Firefly: Alpha Payload User’s Guide, version 5.2)

Can you compare their launch prices?

Firefly’s Alpha Payload User’s Guide, version 5.2 (2025), states a price of $19 million for a dedicated commercial launch. That is the figure stated in that guide, not a current quote. A like-for-like price comparison with Nuri or Falcon 9 is not established here: prices depend on the mission and service, and the cited material does not provide a current set of comparable prices for the same target orbits. Which vehicle is the relevant comparison?

  • For South Korea’s national launch capability: Nuri is the relevant vehicle; KARI’s program overview explains its role in the country’s launch-vehicle development. (KARI: Launch Vehicle)
  • For a small-launch vehicle with published orbit-specific figures: Alpha is the clearest comparison in the available material, with separate stated capacities for SSO and LEO.
  • For reusable launch architecture: Falcon 9 is the distinct example among these three, based on SpaceX’s description of its two-stage reusable vehicle.
  • For a payload ranking: first match orbit, altitude, inclination, and mission conditions. The cited figures do not provide a common basis for ranking all three.
