Nuclear power plants generate electricity by using heat from controlled nuclear fission to make steam. The steam spins a turbine connected to a generator, and transformers then raise the generator’s voltage so electricity can travel over high-voltage transmission lines. The reactor supplies heat; the turbine-generator makes the electricity.
How a nuclear plant turns fission into electricity
- Fission releases heat. Nuclear fission in fuel inside the reactor core releases heat. The reactor is the plant’s heat source, not the device that directly generates electricity. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s explanation describes the sequence: the reaction heats the fuel, the fuel heats water to make steam, the steam spins the turbine, and the turbine turns the generator.
- Heat produces steam. The plant transfers heat to water. Depending on reactor design, water boils in the reactor vessel or heat is transferred to a separate water circuit that boils.
- Steam rotates the turbine. Expanding steam flows across turbine blades, turning the turbine shaft.
- The generator produces electrical output. The turbine shaft turns a generator rotor. The generator converts mechanical rotation into electrical energy through electromagnetic interaction.
- Steam is condensed and reused. After leaving the turbine, steam is cooled back into water and pumped into the heating cycle again. This recirculation is part of the common U.S. boiling-water and pressurized-water reactor arrangements described by the NRC.
How boiling-water and pressurized-water reactors differ
The two common reactor types in U.S. nuclear power plants are boiling-water reactors (BWRs) and pressurized-water reactors (PWRs). Their main difference is whether reactor coolant itself becomes the steam sent toward the turbine or instead transfers heat to a separate water loop. Other reactor designs are used around the world, so these two types should not be taken as a description of every nuclear plant.
| Feature | Boiling-water reactor (BWR) | Pressurized-water reactor (PWR) |
|---|---|---|
| Where water boils | Water boils inside the reactor vessel as it absorbs heat from the core. | Water in the primary reactor-coolant loop remains liquid under pressure. A steam generator transfers heat to a separate secondary loop, where water boils. |
| Steam route to turbine | Separated steam travels from the reactor vessel through a steam line to the turbine. | Steam from the secondary loop travels from the steam generator to the turbine. |
| Key distinction | Reactor coolant is the steam source sent toward the turbine. | Heat crosses between two water loops; secondary-loop water becomes turbine steam. |
| After the turbine | Steam is condensed and returned as water. | Steam is condensed and returned as water. |
In both designs, the turbine-generator converts steam energy into electricity, and the condensed water is cycled back through the plant. The NRC’s BWR overview, its PWR overview, and the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s reactor explanation describe these arrangements.
How electricity travels from the plant to the grid
- Generator terminals produce electricity. The generator’s output is electrical power at the plant’s generator voltage.
- A step-up transformer raises voltage. In the station switchyard, transformers increase voltage before electricity enters long-distance transmission lines. The IAEA’s 2009 report gives broad illustrative ranges of 2–50 kV for power-plant generation and 100–800 kV for transmission. These are not ratings for a particular plant or universal values for every grid. For a given power transfer, higher voltage means lower current and reduces resistive heating losses in transmission conductors. The IAEA report on nuclear power plant grid connections provides this interface context.
- Transmission carries power over distance. High-voltage lines connect the station to the wider network. Substations use transformers to lower voltage for distribution, and local transformers lower it further for end-user service. The EIA’s delivery-to-consumers explainer describes the transmission and distribution path.
- The interconnected grid pools electricity. Power from many generators flows through a shared network, and customers draw from the system rather than from a particular plant’s identifiable electrons. Electricity follows network conditions; it is generally not possible to trace one nuclear plant’s output to a particular home.
- Operators balance supply and demand. The grid must keep generation and electricity use in balance. In the United States, balancing authorities manage this balance in their areas and coordinate transfers. The Lower 48 states’ physical grid is divided into three principal interconnections that mostly operate independently; this governance and layout are U.S.-specific, not universal.
- AC generators must stay synchronized. Generators on an AC interconnection must remain within permitted frequency and phase limits. Protective breakers can disconnect a generator that loses synchronism. Grid codes, equipment, and interconnection settings vary by plant and location.
Why the plant also needs grid electricity
A nuclear station is not only a source of electricity; it also consumes electricity to operate. Pumps circulate reactor coolant, and other plant systems need power during normal operation. The NRC describes typical arrangements in which these systems receive power from the grid. If offsite power is lost, emergency cooling water can be supplied by other pumps, which may be powered by onsite diesel generators. Those examples describe general arrangements in the NRC’s reactor explanations, not every backup-power layer or design at every plant. See the NRC pages for boiling-water reactors and pressurized-water reactors.

How common is steam-turbine generation?
In the EIA’s final 2022 data for U.S. utility-scale net electricity generation, steam turbines of all fuel types produced 42.5% of generation; nuclear steam turbines accounted for 18.2%. The EIA generation page was updated October 31, 2023, and identifies the figures as based on its Form EIA-923 Power Plant Operations Report. These are U.S. figures for 2022, not current-year or worldwide shares. EIA’s electricity-generation page provides the scope and data reference.
