How do the motion controls work?
The Joy-Con senses your movement, and the game translates it into an in-game action. It is not a one-to-one simulation of every real-world motion: Nintendo’s examples include using controlled movement to curve a bowling ball or add spin to a tennis shot. In Soccer’s Leg-Strap Mode, a Joy-Con attached to the strap lets you kick.
Nintendo lists eight sports: Basketball, Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton, and Chambara. Controller arrangements differ by sport and selected mode, so check the in-game instructions when you choose how to play.
Which controllers and play styles are compatible with Nintendo Switch Sports?
Use Joy-Con controllers for motion input. Depending on the sport and mode, the game supports paired or single Joy-Con arrangements, and Soccer also has a Leg-Strap Mode. Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers and Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controllers are not compatible.

The game does not support Handheld Mode. Nintendo recommends TV Mode on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch OLED Model, or Nintendo Switch 2 for the best play experience. The official game page also lists Tabletop Mode and notes compatibility and play-experience caveats for Nintendo Switch Lite.
When do you need the Leg Strap?
The Leg Strap is used for Soccer’s Leg-Strap Mode, where a Joy-Con attached to your leg registers kicking motions. Nintendo describes the strap as required for some Soccer gameplay, not as a general requirement for the other sports. To switch to the mode, follow the Soccer mode instructions in the game.

- Joy-Con 2 controllers cannot be used with the Leg Strap.
How do local and online play differ?
Local play lets people play together without the online membership requirement. For online play, Nintendo states: “An active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to play Nintendo Switch Sports online.” You also need internet access and a Nintendo Account.
Online play includes global matchmaking and play with friends. In some sports, two players on one system can team up online. Nintendo says points earned through online random matchmaking can be redeemed for in-game rewards, and players can aim for the Pro League.

If you select “Play Globally” without an active membership, Nintendo Support says you can enter a trial competition against computer opponents; this is not the same as online matchmaking with other players.
Can I use voice chat when playing online with others?
Voice chat is available in Play with Friends through the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app. It is subject to membership, age, and account restrictions. On Nintendo Switch 2, the game can also be played while chatting through GameChat.

What does the online Wi-Fi indicator mean?
Nintendo says the indicator appears when connection quality for one or more participants is low. If it appears repeatedly, check your network connection and follow Nintendo’s network troubleshooting guidance. Nintendo’s reviewed guidance does not specify a minimum bandwidth, latency target, region, or server architecture.
If the issue seems to be motion input or wireless communication from a Joy-Con rather than online connection quality, use Nintendo’s separate Joy-Con troubleshooting steps.

How to play safely
Nintendo advises players to wear the Joy-Con wrist straps and leave adequate space around themselves while playing. Keep the play area clear of other people and objects before swinging or kicking.
