Nintendo makes money by selling dedicated gaming hardware and software, while online services are another part of its business whose current financial contribution cannot be quantified from the official figures cited here. Nintendo reports hardware and software unit sales, but those counts do not show revenue, profit, or which category earns the most.

What Nintendo sells

Dedicated gaming hardware

Nintendo sells game consoles, including Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch. Its official Dedicated Video Game Sales Units page tracks hardware separately from software. That confirms hardware is a distinct product category, but the unit counts do not disclose console prices received, manufacturing costs, or hardware profit.

Games and software

Nintendo also sells games for its platforms. The same official sales page reports software units by platform, and its Top Selling Title Sales Units page lists leading titles. Nintendo notes that software totals include downloadable versions and quantities bundled with hardware or other products; they are not counts of standalone physical copies.

As of June 30, 2026, Nintendo reported worldwide cumulative sales of 23.68 million Nintendo Switch 2 hardware units and 58.17 million Switch 2 software units. For Nintendo Switch, it reported 156.59 million hardware units and 1,561.95 million software units. These are unit totals, not monetary revenue or profit.

Online services

Nintendo offers online services, including Nintendo Switch Online. The official materials cited here do not establish how much revenue this service or other online services currently contribute. They therefore cannot support a claim about the service’s share of Nintendo’s revenue, its profitability, or whether subscriptions are a major recurring income source.

What Nintendo’s game figures show

The cumulative software figures illustrate the scale of popular Switch games. As of June 30, 2026, Nintendo listed:

Rank #2
Nintendo Switch with Neon Blue and Neon Red Joy-Con - Handheld Gaming Console
  • 6.2” LCD screen
  • Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
  • Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
  • Detachable Joy-Con controllers
  • Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: 71.53 million units
  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons: 50.29 million units
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: 38.14 million units

These figures come from Nintendo’s Top Selling Title Sales Units page and include bundled and downloadable copies. They indicate cumulative software units, not how many customers bought a physical copy separately or how much money Nintendo earned from each title.

Why unit sales do not reveal which part earns the most

A console count, a game count, and a subscription count are not directly comparable measures of financial contribution. Unit sales do not account for the money received per sale, costs, margins, or the accounting period. Nor do the unit disclosures break software into packaged and digital revenue or identify revenue from subscriptions and other activities.

  • This model includes battery life of approximately 4.5 - 9 hours.
  • The battery life will depend on the games you play. For instance, the battery will last approximately 5.5 hours for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (games sold separately)
  • Model number HAC 001( 01)

The official unit figures establish that hardware and software are separately tracked product categories. They do not establish the revenue or profit earned by either category. The sources cited here also do not provide a current, service-specific financial breakdown for Nintendo Switch Online. A ranking of Nintendo’s income streams would require comparable financial disclosures by category and period, rather than unit totals.

What can be concluded about Nintendo’s business model

  • Nintendo sells dedicated gaming hardware and software, and reports unit sales for them separately.
  • Its software totals include bundled and downloadable copies, so they are not equivalent to standalone physical-game sales.
  • The cumulative figures demonstrate product scale, but not revenue, margins, or profit by category.
  • The cited official sources do not quantify the current financial contribution of online services.
