Nature-strip gardens can provide useful food and habitat for pollinators, but their impact depends on local plants, seasons and council rules. In a study of 14 gardens in Melbourne’s Brunswick, Coburg and Fawkner, planted strips attracted seven times more insect pollinators and twice the variety of species than nearby strips left unchanged. That is a promising result from one local experiment—not a guaranteed outcome for every verge garden.

What the Melbourne study found

Dr Philippa Bell and Professor Kirsten Parris of the University of Melbourne partnered with the City of Merri-bek and 14 residents to establish gardens on nature strips in Brunswick, Coburg and Fawkner. The team recorded insect biodiversity before and after installation, comparing the planted strips with control strips left unchanged. Residents helped install native plants known to feed or shelter local insects.

The planted strips attracted seven times more insect pollinators and twice the variety of species as the untouched comparison strips, according to the University of Melbourne feature published 29 September 2026. The feature reports the headline comparison but does not give a confidence interval or enough detail to calculate one. The result therefore supports the value of these gardens in that Melbourne setting, not a particular increase that every gardener can expect.

Plan for local rules before choosing plants

A nature strip is public space, and it may contain underground services, street trees or other infrastructure. Rules can vary by council, including whether approval is needed and what access widths, setbacks, plant heights or species are allowed. Search for [my council] nature strip guidelines; in places where the area is called a verge, parkway or tree lawn, use that local term instead.

For example, Sunshine Coast Council’s self-assessable nature-strip criteria allow garden-bed plants up to 50 cm and require beds to be set back 60 cm from the road edge. Where there is no formed path, a clear pedestrian width of 1.8 m must remain. Work outside those criteria requires a permit. These are Sunshine Coast requirements only; check your own council’s current rules rather than applying those measurements elsewhere.

Choose plants for the street and the season

Start with plants suited to your area and the strip’s actual conditions: sun, shade, soil, water availability and exposure to foot traffic or road edges. Check council planting lists, local native-plant nurseries and community groups for regionally appropriate species. A generic native seed mix may not suit your location, and “native” does not necessarily mean local to your region.

Build variety across the year. The University of Melbourne researchers recommend diversity in flower colour, shape and size, as well as flowering time, so the planting can offer different resources to insects through the seasons. NatureScot’s pollinator-friendly gardening guidance likewise recommends food sources from early spring to late autumn, alongside places for nesting and hibernation. Its seasonal guidance is broad ecological advice, not an Australian plant list; use local sources to identify suitable species.

A Perth study offers a useful illustration of how varied verge gardens can be, not a target to copy: the National Environmental Science Program’s Clean Air and Urban Landscapes Hub surveyed 22 Perth verge gardens in 2021 and recorded an average of 27.8 planted species per garden, with counts ranging from 7 to 97. Its report describes an average of 15 to 40 plant species in suburban verge gardens in that same small Perth context. Those figures are descriptive, not a required or ideal count for every garden, and they are separate from the Melbourne pollinator comparison. See the 2021 Perth verge-gardens report.

Include shelter as well as flowers

Flowers provide food, but a habitat patch can also offer places for insects to nest and shelter. Consider the structure of the planting, not just its blooms, and avoid pesticide exposure where possible. NatureScot’s guidance emphasizes good-quality habitat, including nesting and hibernation places, as part of supporting pollinators.

Prepare the strip patiently

Removing lawn can be difficult. Bell and Parris mention solarising or sheet mulching as ways to prepare the area, and suggest preparing in summer and planting in autumn for their Southern Hemisphere context. The right timing depends on your climate and hemisphere, so treat that calendar as specific to the Melbourne setting rather than a universal schedule. Check council requirements before changing the ground, especially where services or street trees may be present.

Compare plants by practical fit

When deciding between candidate species, consider more than flower colour. A useful local shortlist weighs:

  • Whether the plant is locally appropriate and permitted by your council.
  • When it flowers and whether its flower form and colour add variety to the planting.
  • Its mature height and toughness in streetside conditions.
  • Its water and maintenance needs.
  • Whether it contributes shelter or habitat structure as well as nectar or pollen.

There is no single plant list or design that works across regions. A locally sourced mix that suits the site and complies with council rules is a better starting point than selecting species from a generic pollinator list.
