The exact image size, wall dimensions, projector model, and placement geometry determine whether it fits. Measure the wall’s usable width and height, then check the model’s official throw-distance chart or calculator before choosing a projector or screen.
What determines the wall space a UST projector needs?
UST projectors sit close to the projection surface, but their required wall area and placement distance vary by model and image size. The image must fit the wall, while the projector must also have enough room in front of it and on the console or shelf supporting it.
Optoma describes UST placement as averaging roughly 3 to 12 inches from the screen or wall. That is a category-level estimate, not an installation specification. For example, Optoma says its CinemaX P2 can produce a 100-inch diagonal image with the projector 9.84 inches from the screen (Optoma Support). Use the exact model’s chart to determine your setup.
How to calculate the image area and placement distance
1. Measure usable wall width and height
Measure the area the image can actually occupy, excluding trim, outlets, furniture, and other obstructions. Also measure the depth available for the projector, including its case and any clearance required by the manufacturer. Wall space and projector placement space are separate constraints.

2. Choose an image size that fits
For a 16:9 image, a 100-inch diagonal corresponds to approximately 87.2 inches wide and 49 inches high. These are image dimensions, not the dimensions of a screen frame or housing. RTINGS uses this example to explain why diagonal size alone is not enough when planning a room (RTINGS, updated April 2, 2026).
3. Use the model’s throw ratio or calculator
Throw ratio is the lens-to-surface distance divided by image width. As a first approximation, multiply the image width by the throw ratio to estimate the lens-to-screen distance. For example, RTINGS’ 100-inch, 16:9 image is about 87.2 inches wide; at a 1.2:1 throw ratio, the approximate lens-to-surface distance is 104.6 inches. That example illustrates the calculation and is not a typical UST placement distance.

For an actual UST installation, use the exact projector model’s official calculator or screen-size and throw-distance table. Canon provides a model-based calculator and lists product specifications and dimensional drawings for its short-throw and UST products (Canon throw-distance calculator).
4. Confirm where the distance is measured from
A stated distance may be measured from the lens or from an edge of the projector body. Optoma notes that some UST placement measurements use the closest body edge rather than the lens. The physical gap between the case and wall can therefore differ from a calculator’s lens-to-screen figure. Check the model’s instructions and leave the specified clearance.

Check height, alignment, and screen dimensions
The image must fit vertically as well as horizontally. Check the projector’s vertical offset and the intended image height against the model’s setup guidance. Optoma warns that small movements can shift or distort a UST image, so plan the physical position rather than assuming digital keystone correction will fix a poor fit.
A smooth white wall can work as a projection surface; a dedicated screen is optional. If you choose one, make sure its material is intended for UST projection and compare both its visible viewing area and its total outside frame or housing dimensions with the usable wall. Screen materials are not automatically interchangeable: the NothingProjector calculator separates UST materials from long-throw materials and notes that its results are theoretical, so confirm the screen dimensions and compatibility against the projector manual (NothingProjector screen calculator).

Use this fit check before buying or installing
- Image area: Confirm that the selected image width and height fit within the unobstructed wall area.
- Projection distance: Use the exact model’s chart and identify whether it specifies lens-to-screen distance or a body-edge measurement.
- Console or shelf: Check the projector case depth and required clearances against the available surface.
- Vertical position: Verify offset, image height, and the model’s permitted adjustments.
- Screen: If using one, confirm UST material compatibility and total framed dimensions.
- Adjustment margin: Allow room for accurate positioning; a calculator’s idealized result is not a substitute for checking the manual and the actual fit.
When several setups appear to fit, compare image dimensions, placement distance and its measurement reference, projector and console depth, alignment tolerance, and total screen dimensions. The model-specific manufacturer chart should determine the final placement.
