A 20TB hard drive contains 20,000,000,000,000 bytes. Expressed in binary units, that is about 18.19 TiB—often shown by Windows as roughly 18.19 “TB.” The difference is a unit conversion, not missing capacity. The amount of free space after formatting can be slightly lower and depends on the drive’s setup.

Why a 20TB drive appears to have about 18.2TB

Drive makers use decimal terabytes: 1TB is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. A tebibyte (TiB) uses a larger unit of 1,099,511,627,776 bytes. Dividing the drive’s advertised byte capacity by that binary-unit size gives:

20,000,000,000,000 bytes ÷ 1,099,511,627,776 bytes per TiB ≈ 18.19 TiB

Seagate’s capacity table lists a 20TB drive as 18.18 binary TB; the small difference from 18.19 TiB is due to rounding and displayed precision. Seagate explains the decimal-versus-binary capacity difference in its support article about reported drive capacity.

Western Digital 20TB WD Red Pro NAS Internal Hard Drive HDD - 7200 RPM, SATA 6 Gb/s, CMR, 512 MB Cache, 3.5" - WD202KFGX
  • (1) 1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = 1 trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment.
  • For RAID-optimized NAS systems with unlimited number of bays
  • Rated for 550TB/yr workload rate(2) | (2) Annualized Workload Rate = TB transferred x (8760 / recorded power-on hours). The maximum rated workload is specified for operating at typical temperature of 40C. Workload Rate will vary depending on your hardware and software components and configurations.
  • Designed to handle the demands of high-intensity 24x7 multi-user NAS environments
  • Western Digital partners with a wide range of NAS system vendors for extensive testing to ensure compatibility with most NAS enclosures

Some operating systems, including Windows, may label the binary-unit figure “TB” rather than “TiB.” So a display near 18.2 TB is consistent with a drive sold as 20TB. Both figures describe the same underlying bytes using different unit sizes.

How much space is actually available after formatting?

About 18.19 TiB is the unit-conversion baseline, not a guaranteed figure for free space in a formatted volume. Formatting requires filesystem structures, and the amount of capacity they use depends on the filesystem and configuration. There is no single post-format number that applies to every 20TB drive.

In practice, distinguish the drive’s capacity from the free space shown for a particular formatted volume. The exact figure depends on the drive, partitioning, filesystem, and operating-system setup.

What to check if the drive shows much less than 18.2

A display around 18.2 in Windows is usually explained by the unit conversion above. If substantially less capacity is available, check how the disk is partitioned and whether the system supports it.

Check the partition style

For Windows to address the full capacity of a disk larger than 2TB, Microsoft says it must use the GUID Partition Table (GPT) partitioning scheme. With Master Boot Record (MBR) and 512-byte sectors, the addressable capacity limit is approximately 2.2TB. See Microsoft’s Windows guidance for disks larger than 2TB.

Check boot and system compatibility

A Windows system intended to boot from a GPT disk needs UEFI. Data disks have different requirements. Microsoft also notes that compatibility can depend on the Windows version, storage controller, and drivers, so check support for the specific computer and configuration if the full capacity is not available.
