For the current iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, the available capacities are 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB. There is no single best size for everyone: use your current storage, what you plan to keep on the phone, and whether you record ProRes to choose. Most importantly, do not treat cloud storage as extra built-in capacity.
How to choose the right iPhone Pro capacity
Start by checking how much storage you use today, then consider what you expect to store locally during the time you keep your phone. A current reading is a useful baseline, not a guarantee of what you will need later.
- Open Settings → General → iPhone Storage.
- Review the amount used and which apps or categories account for it.
- Consider whether you expect to add more photos and videos, large apps, or music and other content for offline use.
- If you record ProRes, decide whether you will record to the phone or use a compatible external drive.
- Compare the available capacities against that expected use, and check local prices before choosing a configuration.

What capacities are available?
Apple lists the same four storage options for iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The Pro Max does not have an exclusive storage tier.

Apple’s current technical specifications list these capacities for both models: iPhone 18 Pro technical specifications.
When ProRes changes the calculation
ProRes video can use substantially more space than HEVC. Apple says, “ProRes files are up to 30 times larger than HEVC files.” That is a maximum comparison, not a promise that every ProRes clip will be exactly 30 times larger. Apple: About Apple ProRes on iPhone

Apple says at least 10 percent of the device’s storage must be free to record ProRes. That means capacity planning should account for room to record, not just the size of files already on the phone. Apple also notes that Camera may free storage automatically when ProRes is enabled and fewer than five minutes of recording time remain.
For iPhone 18 Pro, Apple’s technical specifications list ProRes recording up to 4K at 120 frames per second with external recording. However, Apple’s support page for external ProRes workflows names models through iPhone 17 Pro, so its model-specific drive-speed thresholds should not be assumed to apply to iPhone 18 Pro. Check current iPhone 18 Pro requirements before buying a drive or cable for that workflow.

Recording to external storage
External recording is a way to save supported recordings directly to a compatible drive; it does not increase the iPhone’s built-in storage. For the models covered by Apple’s external ProRes support instructions, the stated minimum drive speeds are 220 MB/s for 4K60 ProRes and 440 MB/s for 4K120 ProRes. Apple also specifies exFAT formatting and a USB 3 cable rated at 10 Gbit/s for those supported workflows. Verify compatibility for your exact model and recording mode rather than assuming any USB-C drive or cable will work.

With iCloud Photos and Optimize Storage enabled, full-resolution photos and videos are stored in iCloud while space-saving copies are kept on the iPhone when needed. This can reduce the local space used by a photo library, provided you have enough iCloud capacity. A practical decision rule
- Choose based on current use and plans: Check iPhone Storage, then account for the photos, videos, apps, and offline files you intend to keep locally.
- Allow for ProRes: If you record it frequently, consider the space needed for large files and Apple’s free-space requirement; investigate external recording only for a confirmed compatible workflow.
- Count cloud storage separately: Optimization can help with photos, but iCloud does not expand internal capacity, and it requires enough cloud storage.
- Compare local prices: The best value between capacities depends on the price difference where you are buying; current regional pricing is not established here.
