For many people buying a new phone, 256GB is a comfortable starting point—especially if you keep photos and videos, download media, or plan to use the phone for several years. Choose 128GB if you mostly stream, install few large games, and regularly manage backups and downloads. Consider 512GB or more if you record video often, keep a large offline library, or install multiple large games. These are practical guidelines, not universal thresholds; your current storage use is the best guide.
Choose a capacity based on what you keep on the phone
Built-in storage holds more than photos. Apps and their data, games, downloaded shows and music, maps, documents, and system data all use space. Streaming instead of downloading can reduce local media storage needs, provided you have a reliable connection and do not need the content offline.

Do not translate these tiers into a promised number of photos or hours of video. File sizes vary with format, capture settings, and app behavior. Also, the advertised capacity is not all available for personal files: the operating system, apps, caches, and other data take space, and Apple notes that system storage varies by device and model (Apple Support).
Estimate your needs from the phone you use now
Your existing phone gives you a more useful baseline than a generic photo-count estimate. Look at its storage use, then consider whether the new phone should last longer between cleanups or offloads.

- On an iPhone: Open Settings → General → iPhone Storage. Review available space, recommendations, and app usage. Apple’s storage guide explains this screen and photo-storage options.
- On a Google Pixel: Open Settings → Storage. Review what is taking space and identify backed-up photos, downloads, and unused apps you could remove. Google’s Pixel instructions cover these options.
- Identify what is likely to grow: Consider whether you will keep more photos and videos, install large games, download media for travel, or keep the phone longer than your current one.
- Allow for your cleanup habits: If you rarely delete or offload files, choose more headroom than your current usage alone might suggest. If you routinely manage storage, a smaller tier may be workable.
Account for photos, video, apps, and offline downloads
Photos and video
Keeping original, high-resolution photos and videos on the phone uses device storage. Frequent recording and a growing local library favor a larger tier; cloud photo features can reduce local demand, but they do not make device and cloud capacity the same thing (Apple Support).
Apps and games
Installed apps use storage, as does their associated content and data. A phone with several large games or apps that accumulate files needs more room than one used mainly for lightweight apps. Samsung’s storage buying guide discusses these use-case factors; its examples are manufacturer guidance, not independent population data.

Downloads and offline use
Downloaded shows, music, podcasts, maps, and documents occupy local space. Streaming can reduce the need to store media, but it is not a substitute when you need files without a connection or prefer to keep them available. Include travel and other offline periods in your estimate.
Cloud storage can help, but it has limits
iPhone and iCloud Photos
With iCloud Photos and Optimize Storage enabled, full-resolution photos and videos can be kept in iCloud while space-saving copies remain on the phone. This can reduce local photo use, provided you have enough iCloud space and access to the service. Apple says an iCloud account includes 5GB of free storage (Apple Support).

Google Photos and Google Account storage
Google says each Google Account comes with up to 15GB of storage shared among Google Photos, Gmail, and Google Drive—not 15GB reserved just for phone photos. Google Photos backup quality also affects how photos and videos are stored: Storage Saver may reduce quality or resolution in some cases, while Original quality preserves original resolution and counts toward account storage. Cloud backup is most useful when you keep it current and have enough account capacity. As a library grows, you may need to manage files or use a paid plan. It is a separate capacity to manage, not a replacement for local space needed by apps, downloads, or files you want available on-device.

Check the exact phone configuration before buying
Available storage tiers vary by phone model and market. Confirm the manufacturer’s listing for the exact model and region rather than assuming every phone comes in every capacity. For example, Tom’s Guide’s current phone listings report 128GB and 256GB options for the Pixel 10a; that is a model-specific listing, not a rule for other phones (Tom’s Guide).
Some phones do not allow internal storage expansion after purchase. If you are choosing between tiers, compare the upgrade price with the cost—in time and inconvenience—of more frequent cleanup or file offloading. For an iPhone, the models discussed in Macworld’s 2026 buying guide do not offer later internal expansion; check the specific model you are considering.

External drives are for offloading, not extra app storage
A portable USB-C drive may let you transfer files away from a compatible phone, but check the phone’s port, operating system, file-system support, and transfer workflow before relying on one. This approach is useful if you are willing to offload files; it does not add internal space for apps or system updates.
