Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Choose enough storage for the apps and other content you actually plan to keep, then compare exact models and their intended workloads. More RAM or a faster chip can matter for responsiveness and demanding tasks, but specification numbers alone do not establish which device will feel faster across brands.
What storage, RAM, and processing power each do
- Storage holds installed apps and device data. It becomes more relevant if you install many apps or games, or keep media locally.
- RAM is working memory used while the device runs apps and its interface. It is not the same as storage capacity.
- The processor handles the device’s computing tasks. A processor specification can describe hardware, but does not by itself predict real-world speed across different operating systems and devices.
Manufacturers do not publish a common app-count threshold or a universal minimum for these components. For a small set of streaming apps, extra storage may have little practical value once those apps fit. If you expect to install a larger collection, play games, or keep local content, additional capacity gives you more room.
How to compare published specifications
Compare exact models and generations, and keep the numbers in their proper categories. Google’s published comparison lists the Chromecast with Google TV (4K) with 2 GB of RAM and 8 GB of storage, versus 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage for the Google TV Streamer (4K). Google also describes the Streamer’s CPU as 22% faster than the Chromecast model; that is Google’s comparison between those named devices, not an independent cross-brand benchmark. See Google’s Google TV Streamer comparison and device specifications.
Roku’s hardware table lists the 2025 Roku Streaming Stick Plus with an ARM Cortex A55 processor and 1 GB of RAM, and the 2024 Roku Ultra with an ARM Cortex A55 processor and 2 GB of RAM. These are model-specific specifications, not a direct speed test or proof that the two devices perform identically. Roku’s hardware specifications also let buyers compare features such as resolution and HDR by model.

Apple’s current Apple TV 4K technical page identifies an A15 Bionic chip and says 4K/HDR streaming requires a compatible 4K/HDR television. The reviewed page does not state RAM or storage figures, so do not infer those values from the chip name. Check Apple’s Apple TV 4K technical specifications.
Choose for your apps, TV, and network
- List what you will install. If you only need a few streaming apps, prioritize whether they are available on the device rather than chasing the largest storage figure. If you want games or locally stored media, consider storage headroom.
- Check the exact model and year. Product families can contain devices with different memory and hardware. Do not apply one model’s specification to every stick or box from the same brand.
- Match video features to your setup. Confirm that the device supports the resolution and HDR formats you want and that your TV is compatible. Apple explicitly requires a compatible 4K/HDR TV for 4K/HDR streaming on Apple TV 4K.
- Consider the workload and extras. Gaming or a more feature-rich interface may make processing and memory more relevant than basic playback. Also compare network features against your home setup; raw CPU or RAM figures do not tell you whether a device suits your Wi-Fi or wired-network needs.
- Use like-for-like performance claims. Treat a vendor’s speed comparison as limited to its stated models and conditions. No common benchmark in the published specifications reviewed here ranks Apple, Amazon, Roku, and Google devices against one another.
What older comparisons can—and cannot—tell you
A 2023 U.S. House Committee hearing document reported that Apple TV had the most storage among five devices it compared, and that the Roku Streaming Stick+ had the least RAM and storage in that tested set. It characterized that older Stick+ as designed primarily for third-party channels. These observations describe the document’s specific comparison and older devices; they are not current rankings of today’s product lines. The document is available as Table 4: Streaming devices and technical specifications.

Bottom line for choosing a device
For ordinary app-based viewing, start with app availability, your TV’s resolution and HDR support, and the storage needed for your planned apps and content. Give extra capacity more weight if you install many apps, play games, or store media. Use RAM and processor details to compare exact models, not as a standalone cross-brand speed score.
