For everyday PC use and a modest gaming library, 1 TB is a practical starting point. Choose 2 TB or more if you want several large games installed at once or keep a lot of media and creative work on the same drive. There is no universal capacity requirement: estimate what you plan to store, then leave room for Windows, applications, updates, and future installs.
How to choose the right SSD capacity
Start with the games and files you want available without uninstalling or moving them. Add their stated storage requirements, then account for your operating system, applications, personal files, and headroom for updates and new installs. A drive that is nearly full leaves less flexibility when a large game or update arrives.
As a rule of thumb, 1 TB suits everyday use and a modest game library. If you keep several large games installed simultaneously, or also store substantial video, photo, or creative project files locally, 2 TB or more may be a better fit. These are planning recommendations, not official minimums.
How much space can PC games require?
Publisher requirements vary widely. The examples below are stated PC storage requirements, not an estimate of the average game size or a recommendation for total drive capacity.

Three games with requirements around 100–150 GB could use several hundred gigabytes before the operating system, applications, personal files, updates, and other games are counted. A published requirement is a planning reference, not a promise that a game’s installed size will remain unchanged as it receives updates or optional content; check the current listing for games you intend to install.
Does gaming require an SSD?
It depends on the game and its listed PC specifications. For example, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart lists an HDD at minimum and an SSD for recommended and higher configurations. Insomniac encourages an SSD with the recommended specifications or higher to experience its dimension-hopping gameplay as intended. That guidance applies to this title and its configurations; it does not establish a universal performance gain or a requirement for every PC game.

When deciding capacity, focus on the amount of space you need to keep games installed. Do not assume that a larger SSD automatically produces the same loading or gameplay improvement in every title.

Capacity alone does not determine whether a drive will work in your PC. Check the computer or motherboard documentation for supported interface, form factor, available slots, and any limits that affect the drive you plan to add or use as a replacement. Not every desktop or laptop accepts an M.2 NVMe SSD.

Console requirements are not a substitute for PC compatibility guidance. For example, Sony specifies PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe and 250 GB–4 TB for an SSD installed in a PS5; those are PS5-specific requirements, not general rules for PC drives. See Sony’s PS5 M.2 SSD guide only when checking that console.

A simple capacity-planning checklist
- List what stays installed. Include games, applications, and local media or project files you want readily available.
- Use current game listings. Add the stated storage requirements for the games you expect to keep installed, while allowing for changes from updates or optional content.
- Leave room beyond that total. The operating system, applications, updates, and future installs also need space.
- Choose a practical tier. For everyday use and a modest library, start by considering 1 TB; consider 2 TB or more for several large games or substantial local files.
- Verify the drive fits your PC. Confirm interface, form factor, slot availability, and whether the drive is being added or replacing an existing one before purchasing.
