Treat those as model-specific MSRP starting prices, not guaranteed checkout prices. Choose based on the configuration, screen and remaining update support you need—not the price tag or “Plus” label alone.
Chromebook budgets: what the listed prices buy
Google’s US-facing shop, accessed October 7, 2026, provides three useful reference points. These are vendor-listed MSRP starting prices, not an average market price or a promise of current retailer pricing.
| Example | Listed starting price | Listed configuration | What to note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Acer Chromebook 315 | $179 | 4 GB RAM; 64 GB storage | Entry-level reference. Verify the exact configuration and its update date before buying. |
| ASUS Chromebook Plus CX34 | $369 | i3-class processor; 8 GB RAM; 128 GB storage; 14-inch Full HD display | A Chromebook Plus example with more listed memory and storage than the cited entry model. |
| Acer Chromebook Plus 515 | $429.99 | Intel Core i3-1305; 8 GB RAM; 128 GB storage; 15.6-inch Full HD display | A larger-screen Chromebook Plus example. |
Prices and configurations are from Google’s Chromebook shop. Taxes, retailer discounts, inventory and merchant checkout prices are not established by these listings and may vary. The examples are not performance-test results, and they do not establish a market-wide “sweet spot.”
How much should you spend for your needs?
Around $180: keep the workload simple
The $179 Acer Chromebook 315 listing is a low-cost reference, not a universal recommendation. Its listed 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage may suit a buyer whose needs are modest, but do not assume that every version—or every student’s workload—will be a good fit. Confirm the exact offered configuration and how long that model will receive automatic updates.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Around $350–$450: compare configurations, not just labels
The CX34 at $369 and Chromebook Plus 515 at $429.99 illustrate this range in Google’s catalog. Both list 8 GB RAM and 128 GB storage, with differences in processor, screen size and other design details. Compare the specific listing against your needs; the higher price alone does not establish that one device is faster, more durable or better value.
Above that: identify the feature you are paying for
A higher price can make sense when it buys a capability you will use, such as a convertible 2-in-1 hinge, a larger or higher-resolution screen, or more storage. Google’s catalog includes Chromebook Plus Spin models with 2-in-1 designs and higher starting prices. Treat those as feature choices, not proof that a more expensive Chromebook is automatically better.

What to compare before choosing between two Chromebooks
- Find the exact model and its update end date. Use Google’s Auto Update policy page to check the model-specific date. Do not assume an older or discounted device has as much support remaining as a newly released one.
- Compare the actual RAM, storage and processor. Check the precise configuration being sold, not only the family name. The listed examples range from 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage on the Acer 315 to 8 GB and 128 GB on the two Plus examples.
- Match screen and form factor to how you use the device. Consider display size and resolution, and whether a conventional clamshell or convertible design fits your work. Pay extra for a larger screen or 2-in-1 hinge only if it is useful to you.
- Check the final price and seller terms in your region. Google’s figures above are US MSRP starting prices. Compare the actual configuration, taxes, return policy and warranty terms offered by the seller.
- Be cautious with battery-life claims. Google notes that actual battery life varies with model, configuration, applications, settings and operating conditions. Treat “up to” claims as vendor estimates; consult independent testing for the exact model or look for a return policy that gives you time to assess it.
What Chromebook Plus does—and does not—tell you
Chromebook Plus is a hardware category, but the requirements cited by Google apply to legacy devices eligible for a Plus OS update. For those named eligible models, Google specifies a qualifying processor, at least 8 GB RAM, at least 128 GB storage, a 1080p-or-better webcam with Temporal Noise Reduction, and a Full HD IPS-or-better display. These criteria are not a rule that any Chromebook meeting some of the listed specifications automatically qualifies. Check the exact device against Google’s Chromebook Plus eligibility information.

Google says, “ChromeOS devices receive 10 years of updates.” The policy describes that period as 10 years from the platform release and publishes an automatic-update end date for each model. The policy is a support commitment, not an independent measure of how long a device will physically last. Some pre-2021 devices receiving extended updates may not support certain features and services. Check the exact model and date in Google’s update policy table, particularly for used, older or clearance stock.
