Budget for the console after local tax, any setup item you truly need, the games and online features you expect to use, optional accessories or storage, and recurring costs over a period you choose. There is no reliable universal “extra cost” total: the answer depends on your console model, location, games, play habits and existing internet service. Use the worksheet below to build a purchase-day figure and a separate one-year estimate.
Start with two totals: purchase day and the period after
Keep one-time checkout costs separate from recurring spending. That makes it easier to see how much cash you need to buy and set up the console, and what it may cost to keep using it.

|---|---|---|
| Console at checkout | Current price for the exact model, plus local sales tax and delivery charged by the seller | Purchase day |
| Required setup item | Only equipment or service you do not already have and need to use the console | Purchase day |
| Games | Add the current local prices of the specific games you plan to buy during your chosen period | Purchase day and/or later |
| Online service | Current local plan price for the paid features you need | Recurring, if applicable |
| Optional gear and storage | Price only the compatible items that solve a real need for your household | Purchase day or later |
| Electricity and internet | Estimate from your play hours, console power use, local electricity rate and any broadband cost change | Recurring, if applicable |
| Warranty or repair coverage | Check the exact manufacturer and retailer terms for your model and location | One-time or conditional |
Write down these subtotals:
- Purchase-day cash: console after tax and delivery + required setup items + games or services you choose to pay for at checkout + any optional items you want immediately.
- One-year estimate: purchase-day cash + later game purchases + any recurring service, electricity, internet increase or coverage cost expected during the next 12 months.
Use your own time horizon if a year is not useful. Do not count the full annual cost of a subscription if you plan to pay for fewer months, and do not count an existing broadband bill as a console expense unless the console causes you to change plans.
Use console prices as dated anchors, not checkout quotes
For the United States, Sony announced recommended retail prices effective April 2, 2026: PS5 at $649.99, PS5 Digital Edition at $599.99, and PS5 Pro at $899.99. These are manufacturer recommended prices, not a promise of a retailer’s current price or your final checkout total. See Sony’s March 27, 2026 announcement.

Microsoft announced that Xbox console prices would increase effective August 1, 2026 by US$100 for 512 GB models and US$150 for 1 TB models. That announcement gives the size of the increases, not a complete current US price list by model, so check the exact model and seller before filling in your worksheet. See Xbox Wire’s June 25, 2026 announcement.
These figures are U.S.-specific and date-sensitive. In another country, use the current local price and tax treatment. A recommended price, an announced price change and a retailer’s checkout amount are different things.
Price the games you will actually play
Estimate how many games you expect to buy during your chosen period, then look up those titles at the retailers and stores available to you. A broad “average game price” is less useful than the prices of the games on your own list; no representative current price set is established here.
Buying games individually and paying for a subscription library are different spending patterns, not automatic substitutes. Compare the current local cost of the titles you want with the current plan terms and the time you expect to play. If you only want one or two specific games, a library subscription may not be the better value; if you play many titles included in a plan, it may suit you. Recheck the price and availability before purchase.
Pay for online services only when you need their features
Some online features may require a paid platform plan, while other play does not necessarily call for one. Decide what you intend to do—such as online multiplayer or access to a catalog—and check the platform’s current regional plan price and terms for that feature. A reliable comparable set of current subscription prices is not established here, so do not use an assumed generic monthly figure in the budget.

Separate essential equipment from optional upgrades
Check what comes in the box
Do not add a controller or basic cables to the budget without checking the exact package. Microsoft’s Xbox Series X product page lists one Xbox Series X controller, an ultra-high-speed HDMI cable and a power cord as included items. Package contents can differ by model or bundle; verify the listing for the console you are buying. See Microsoft Store’s Xbox Series X product page.
Add a controller or headset only for a defined use
An extra controller is useful if people in your household will play local multiplayer or you want a spare. A headset is useful if voice chat or private listening matters to you. Neither is a universal requirement for owning a console.
Treat storage expansion as a conditional cost
More storage may be worthwhile if your game library fills the console’s available space and you want to avoid uninstalling and reinstalling games. Before buying an expansion, confirm that it works with your specific console and compare its current local price. Xbox Series X storage expansion is an option, not a necessary add-on for every buyer; compatibility and capacity vary by product.

Electricity depends on how many hours you play, the console’s power draw in the way you use it and your local electricity rate. Internet cost depends on whether your existing broadband plan can handle your household’s use or you choose to upgrade. Without those inputs, a cross-platform annual utility figure would be guesswork.
If you want to estimate electricity, use the power figure for the exact console and operating mode, convert watts to kilowatts, multiply by your expected hours, and then multiply by your electricity price per kilowatt-hour. For example, the calculation structure is: (watts ÷ 1,000) × hours played × local price per kWh. Use a figure that matches your usage conditions; do not treat a peak or laboratory number as an everyday average. Add only any internet-plan increase that you actually expect to pay.

Check tax, delivery and warranty terms locally
Sales tax, delivery charges and retailer return terms depend on your location and seller, so use the checkout total for the exact listing. Warranty coverage also varies by brand, model and jurisdiction; keep proof of purchase and read the terms that apply where you live.
For scope, Nintendo of America’s support page states a standard 12-month warranty for Nintendo systems and a three-month warranty for individually sold games and accessories. Those terms should not be assumed to apply outside Nintendo of America. See Nintendo of America’s warranty support page.

Sony’s U.S. PS5 warranty covers qualifying defects with repair or replacement at Sony’s option, requires proof of purchase for warranty service, and notes that consumer rights vary by state or province. These are U.S. terms, not a global warranty summary. See PlayStation’s U.S. PS5 warranty terms.
Compare consoles on total cost, not just the sticker
When comparing two models, fill out the same worksheet for each one using local prices. Include the games you specifically want and gear you genuinely need; otherwise, a lower console price can be misleading.
- Compare the checkout price after tax and delivery.
- Check whether the model has a disc drive or is digital-only, then consider how you plan to buy games.
- Price the actual titles on your list, rather than assuming one console’s games are cheaper.
- Include a paid subscription only if you need its features, using current local terms.
- Subtract what is already included, such as the Xbox Series X controller and cables listed by Microsoft.
- Check storage capacity and the price of compatible expansion only if you expect to need it.
- Compare local warranty and retailer terms for the exact model.
Within the Xbox range, Microsoft describes Series X as having native 4K output and a UHD Blu-ray disc player, while Series S is disc-free and designed for 1440p with the option to upscale to 4K; both have storage expansion options. Those distinctions can affect which model fits a buyer, but they are not a complete comparison across all console brands. Check the exact model’s current local listing and included items. See Microsoft’s Xbox Series X product page.
Keep financing and refurbished options in their proper place
Microsoft’s June 2026 Xbox Wire announcement mentioned eligible installment plans, financing of up to 12 months at 0% APR through partners, trade-in initiatives and certified refurbished consoles up to US$100 off MSRP. These offers are time- and region-sensitive, and the announcement does not establish that every buyer qualifies or that an offer is available for every model. Check eligibility, full terms and availability at purchase time. Financing changes payment timing; it does not by itself lower the underlying price. See Xbox Wire’s announcement.
