There is no universal shade percentage for corals. In one American Samoa study, 50% and 75% shade both reduced bleaching in three Indo-Pacific species during thermal stress, with 75% providing greater protection under the intense light conditions tested. Those percentages are experimental treatments, not targets that can be applied to every reef. Reef teams can assess exposure by measuring underwater photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) at coral level in shaded and comparable unshaded conditions, then tracking coral health separately.
What the evidence says about coral shade
Coelho and colleagues’ 2017 study combined aquarium experiments with a field-platform experiment in American Samoa. It tested no shade, 50% shade and 75% shade during thermal stress in Acropora muricata, Pocillopora damicornis and Porites cylindrica. Both shaded treatments reduced bleaching in the studied corals, and the heavier shade was more protective in the conditions tested. The researchers also describe limits to protection as cumulative heat stress increased. Read the study record at NOAA.
The experiment does not establish a species-independent shade requirement, a target PAR level, or a safe shading duration for reefs generally. The results should not be treated as proof that the same treatment would work at another depth, site, season or for another species. Shade changes light exposure; it does not remove heat stress or guarantee that bleaching will be prevented.
How to measure shade at a reef site
The study measured irradiance using an underwater spherical quantum sensor and PAR meter. For a field comparison, measure PAR at or near the coral surface beneath the shade treatment and at a comparable unshaded control. Pair each reading with the conditions that make it interpretable.
#1 Best Overall
- All-in-One Spectrum Measurement: Accurately measures full-spectrum PAR (400–700nm) and UVA plus individual red, green, and blue (RGB) PPFD values for a complete picture of your reef lighting.
- Advanced Data Logging: Use the HOLD button to freeze the current reading, and RECORD mode to capture and store up to 99 measurements. Build detailed PAR/UVA distribution maps across your tank to optimize coral placement and ensure uniform light coverage.
- Lab-Calibrated Accuracy: Equipped with a high-grade precision PAR sensor and scientific calibration, this meter delivers lab-level accuracy. Trust each measurement to precisely reflect the true light intensity for healthy coral growth and photosynthesis.
- The rugged IP68-rated waterproof probe and ergonomic handheld unit are built to withstand regular aquarium use and make routine lighting checks effortless.
- Record site, depth, date and time, along with whether the reading is from a shaded treatment or control.
- Use the same sensor setup and measurement position for treatment and control readings wherever possible.
- Compare the measured PAR values rather than assuming that a structure labelled “50% shade” produces that reduction at coral level.
- Repeat measurements and document the sampling approach. The cited sources do not specify a universal sampling frequency or a target PAR value for reef teams.
Measured light reduction is an exposure result, not evidence by itself that an intervention benefits the coral or meets a restoration goal. Evaluate biological responses separately and interpret them against local conditions.
Track coral response as well as light
To determine whether a shading intervention is associated with a useful outcome, combine PAR readings with repeated observations of coral condition. The U.S. Coral Reef Task Force’s 2026 bleaching-monitoring standard operating procedures identify four useful measures: live coral cover, bleaching prevalence, bleaching severity and recent mortality. They recommend surveys before bleaching, at peak bleaching and at two post-bleaching timepoints. The SOP is designed to scale across monitoring groups with different capacities.

- PAR Meter for Aquarium specially. IP68 Waterproof Sensor with a 3F telescopic rod.
- Test the PAR for kinds of lights accurately. Can search "compare" in Q&A to see the comparison between VBR-AQUA and other brand.
- Show the PAR of the blue, green, and red in the light seperately. Know the PAR of Blue that is very important for your coral growth, health, and coloration.
- Record 400 points of PAR, convenient to record the PAR of each position in the tank. DLI for 28 days.
- 3 AAA batteries can ensure the PAR meter last for 100 hours. Also can use the adapter for continuous testing.
These observations help distinguish “the shade reduced light” from “coral condition changed.” They also provide a more meaningful basis for comparing treatment levels: consider measured PAR, species and site conditions alongside bleaching and mortality, rather than judging an intervention by its nominal shade percentage alone.

NOAA’s National Coral Reef Monitoring Program provides regional survey protocols, and methods differ between Atlantic and Pacific jurisdictions. Those protocols include coral demographic measures, such as size and estimates of bleaching and mortality, as well as benthic cover assessment. NOAA’s 2020 restoration monitoring guide frames monitoring around progress toward stated project goals. Teams should select the applicable regional protocol and define project outcomes rather than treating one monitoring method as universal.
