For basic file sharing and backups, start with the memory baseline supported by your NAS and operating system. Plan for more when you add apps, virtual machines, more clients, memory-intensive backup features such as deduplication, or cache. Requirements differ by model, platform, software version, and feature.
How to size RAM for your NAS
Start with the exact NAS model and its operating system, then account for everything the system will do at the same time. A file server with a few users is a different workload from a NAS that also runs applications, virtual machines, or deduplicating backups.
- Check the model’s supported memory. Confirm its installed capacity, upgrade options, maximum capacity, and compatible module guidance in the manufacturer’s specifications.
- Check the software and feature requirements. Requirements can vary by operating system version and package. Apply a figure only to the platform and feature it describes.
- List concurrent workloads. Include file sharing, backup jobs, clients, apps, virtual machines, directory services, and any cache feature.
- Choose capacity within the model’s limits. Do not buy a module based on a generic NAS recommendation; compatibility and maximum capacity are model-specific.
RAM is shared among storage services and other workloads. TrueNAS documentation describes it as serving sharing services, apps, virtual machines, and read caching. More connected clients and concurrent tasks can therefore change what is practical, even when the NAS is mainly used for file storage.

These figures are examples from specific vendor documentation, not interchangeable recommendations for every NAS.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Platform or feature | Published guidance | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| TrueNAS Community Edition, basic operation | TrueNAS documentation published in 2025 gives 8 GB for basic operation with up to eight drives. | A TrueNAS baseline for the stated drive count; workload and drive-count guidance may call for more. |
| Synology Active Backup for Business deduplication | Synology recommends at least 4 GB for optimal deduplication performance on a supported x64 NAS using Btrfs. Publication date is not stated. | This is tied to that backup feature and its platform conditions, not a minimum for all Synology devices or backups. |
| Synology SSD cache on DSM 7.0 and later | Synology states that each GB of SSD cache requires approximately 400 KB of system memory; built-in memory contribution is limited to one-fourth. | Use this only when planning Synology SSD cache. It is not a general RAM-per-cache formula for other systems. |
| QNAP QTS 5.1.x | The QNAP QTS 5.1.x user guide lists at least 4 GB of installed memory under NAS requirements. The guide is indexed as approximately 2024. | Check that this guide applies to your QNAP model and software. |
| QNAP QuTS hero h5.2.x deduplication | The QNAP QuTS hero h5.2.x user guide requires at least 16 GB of memory for deduplication. The guide is indexed as approximately 2024. | This is a feature-specific requirement, not a general recommendation for QNAP NAS devices. |
How the workload changes the decision
File sharing
For file sharing alone, use the maker’s baseline and consider the number of clients and concurrent activity. TrueNAS specifies 8 GB for basic operation with up to eight drives and advises adding memory generally as more clients connect. Synology’s guidance says Btrfs suits general file sharing but does not give a RAM amount for that use. Neither statement establishes a universal target across brands.
Backups and deduplication
Basic backups and deduplicating backups should not be treated as the same memory workload. Synology’s 4 GB recommendation is for optimal Active Backup for Business deduplication performance on an x64 NAS using Btrfs; its guidance also identifies deployment conditions such as DSM version and available space. QNAP’s 16 GB figure applies to deduplication in QuTS hero h5.2.x. Use the requirement for the exact product and feature rather than combining the numbers into a cross-brand rule.

Apps and virtual machines
Apps and virtual machines use the same memory pool as file services and caching. TrueNAS recommends higher memory for some iSCSI-backed virtual machine use, while Synology’s model table pairs maximum memory with recommended VM counts. This makes the practical limit dependent on the model as well as the applications or VMs you intend to run.
Cache
If you plan SSD cache on Synology DSM 7.0 or later, account for the documented memory overhead: approximately 400 KB per GB of SSD cache, with no more than one-fourth of built-in memory available to support SSD cache. The installed RAM also affects the cache size the system permits.

Check compatibility before upgrading
A NAS may support an upgrade without supporting every module or capacity. Synology’s model-specific specifications show that maximum memory and recommended VM counts vary across systems; that information does not validate third-party modules. Before buying, verify the exact model’s current supported capacity and memory-module guidance. Manufacturer specifications can change, so confirm them for the operating-system and package versions you plan to use.
