If you use systemd zram-generator, its documented default is half of usable RAM, capped at 4 GiB. That is a reasonable starting point—not a promise of extra physical memory or a workload-tested optimum.
What zram size actually means
zram creates a compressed block device in RAM, commonly used as swap. Its configured size is the device’s logical capacity; it does not reserve that full amount of physical RAM when the device is created. Physical memory is used as pages are stored, and the amount depends on how compressible those pages are and on implementation overhead. The Linux kernel documentation describes zram as a compressed RAM-based block device.
So a 4 GiB zram device does not mean 4 GiB of additional physical memory, nor does it guarantee 4 GiB of efficiently usable swap. It is a capacity limit for the virtual device, while its resident memory use varies with the data stored in it.
A practical starting size with systemd zram-generator
The documented systemd zram-generator default is min(ram / 2, 4096), with ram measured in MiB. In plain terms, it sets the device to half of usable RAM, up to 4 GiB. This is the default for that generator, not a universal Linux default; other tools and distribution configurations may use different settings. The generator can create zram devices for swap or filesystems, so confirm which configuration manager your system uses.

These are calculations from the documented formula, not benchmark results. If your system uses this generator and you do not have workload-specific measurements, its default is a sensible initial setting to evaluate.
When to choose a smaller or larger device
The systemd project’s example configuration describes fractions from 0.1 to 0.5 as recommended, and includes zram-size = min(ram / 10, 2048) as an example. A lower fraction may suit a system where limiting potential resident-memory use matters more than maximizing zram device capacity. Neither the range nor the example establishes an optimal setting for every workload.

The kernel documentation says there is little point making a zram device larger than twice physical memory because it expects a 2:1 compression ratio. That is a sizing rationale based on an expectation, not a guarantee for arbitrary data. The practical benefit depends on how well your workload’s pages compress and on the CPU cost of compression and decompression.
There is no evidence here for a universal benefit from allocating 100% of RAM, or for a precise best size by workload. A larger logical device does not ensure better responsiveness or prevent out-of-memory conditions.

Device capacity and resident-memory limit are separate settings
In systemd zram-generator, zram-size controls the logical device capacity. The separate zram-resident-limit setting can cap the physical memory occupied by resident zram pages. Its documented default is 0, meaning no limit. If you need a firm ceiling on resident use, consider that setting independently rather than assuming the device size itself is a physical-memory cap. How to choose and assess a setting
- Identify the manager. Check whether your distribution uses systemd zram-generator; do not apply its default formula to a setup managed by something else.
- Choose an initial capacity. With systemd zram-generator, start from its default formula or consider a lower fraction within the example’s 0.1–0.5 range when a conservative approach is preferred.
- Set any resident cap separately. If you want to limit physical memory use, evaluate
zram-resident-limitas its own control. - Assess the actual workload. Compare settings in terms of device capacity as a fraction of usable RAM, resident-memory use, data compressibility, memory pressure, and CPU/performance behavior on your system.
The official references provide configuration guidance and a general compression assumption, but no workload-specific benchmark establishing a best size or compression algorithm. Use observed behavior on your own system to decide whether changing the starting point helps.
