There is no single RAM capacity that suits every PC. Windows 11’s 4 GB minimum is an operating-system floor, not a target for gaming or demanding work. For creative apps, vendor recommendations are more useful: Adobe recommends 16 GB for Premiere Pro with HD media and 32 GB or more for 4K and higher, while Photoshop’s recommendation is 16 GB or more. The right amount depends on the software, workload and whether you run other demanding apps at the same time.

The figures below are software or device requirements—not independent performance tests. A minimum is not the same as a comfortable target, and a recommendation does not guarantee a particular result for every project or setup.

How much RAM do you need for gaming?
There is no defensible one-number answer for gaming from the available authoritative figures: the Windows minimum does not describe what a particular game needs, and the creative-app requirements above do not apply to games. Game requirements are specific to the title and its stated configuration.
For a particular game, look up its official minimum and recommended PC specifications, then compare those with your computer’s installed memory. If you intend to run other demanding applications alongside it, treat the game’s requirement as an app-specific figure rather than a total-memory recommendation. These sources do not provide a quantified rule for how much extra memory such multitasking requires.

How much RAM do you need for work?
“Work” covers too many different applications and workloads for one useful capacity recommendation. Microsoft’s 4 GB Windows 11 figure only tells you the operating system’s minimum; it does not establish how much memory a particular work app or combination of apps needs.
Start with the requirements for the software you use. If you work across several demanding apps at once, their individual requirements do not add up to a published universal total. Check the vendors’ recommendations for your actual apps and workload rather than treating the Windows minimum as a target.

How much RAM do creative apps need?
Photoshop
Adobe lists 8 GB as the minimum and 16 GB or more as recommended for Photoshop on desktop. These are Adobe’s software requirements, not a measurement of peak memory use for a particular image or workflow.
Premiere Pro
Adobe specifies 8 GB minimum, with its recommendation varying by media resolution: 16 GB for HD media and 32 GB or more for 4K and higher. Blender
Blender lists 8 GB minimum and 32 GB recommended. A recommendation is a starting point, not a promise that every scene will fit or perform a particular way; the requirements page does not quantify memory use for individual projects.
Minimum, recommended and total memory are different questions
- Minimum: The vendor’s stated floor for the operating system or application. It does not, by itself, say what is suitable for a demanding workload.
- Recommended: A vendor’s guidance for the named software and workload, such as Adobe’s separate Premiere Pro recommendations for HD and 4K-and-higher media.
- Total capacity for multitasking: App requirements do not establish a universal amount for running several demanding programs together. The relevant combination depends on which apps and tasks are open.
None of the figures here comes from independent testing. They do not establish measured frame-rate gains, performance uplift or the peak memory used by a particular project.

Check compatibility before buying a RAM upgrade
A capacity recommendation does not tell you which memory kit fits your computer. Before shopping, identify the exact computer or motherboard model and verify its supported memory generation, form factor and maximum capacity. Also check whether memory is replaceable or expandable: some systems have soldered or otherwise non-upgradeable memory. Microsoft notes that some PCs below the Windows 11 minimum may have upgrade options, but that does not mean every device can be upgraded.

- Find the exact device model. Use the computer maker’s specifications or support information; for a custom desktop, check the motherboard model.
- Confirm the supported memory type and form factor. Do not assume that a capacity figure identifies a compatible module or kit.
- Check capacity limits and upgradeability. Confirm how much memory the system supports, how many slots are available and whether its memory can be replaced or expanded.
- Match the purchase to the workload. Use the relevant app or game requirements as a guide, while recognizing that vendor figures do not predict every multitasking setup or project.
