For gaming, 16 GB is a practical baseline for the two example games checked here, while 32 GB can give you more room when you game alongside demanding apps, stream, or record. The right amount depends on your games and what else is running—not just Windows’ minimum requirement.
Quick guide: choose RAM for your workload
| What you do | Practical guidance | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Browse the web, work with documents, or stream video | 8 GB for more comfortable longer-term use | Microsoft says basic use can start at 4 GB, but this is general guidance, not a guarantee for every current app combination. Microsoft Support |
| Play games with few other apps open | 16 GB is a practical baseline for the example titles below | Cyberpunk 2077 and Starfield each list 16 GB in their PC requirements; meeting the RAM figure alone does not guarantee a particular frame rate or settings level. CD PROJEKT RED; Steam |
| Game while keeping a browser, chat, capture, or streaming software open | Consider 32 GB for additional multitasking headroom | A 2026 test report found similar behavior in selected games in some cases, with exceptions; it does not establish a universal threshold. PC Gamer, April 10, 2026 |
| Edit photos or videos, or do other higher-performance work | 16 GB or more may fit the workload | Microsoft’s general guidance; software and project size affect what is comfortable. Microsoft Support |
Why Windows 11’s 4 GB minimum is not a gaming target
Microsoft lists 4 GB RAM as the minimum system requirement for Windows 11. A minimum means the operating system can meet its stated baseline; it is not a recommendation for gaming or a promise that a PC will feel responsive with several modern apps open. Microsoft also notes that specific features, applications, or hardware may require more. Windows 11 specifications
Microsoft’s separate memory guide describes 4 GB as a starting point for basic browsing, documents, or online video, recommends 8 GB for longer-term use, and suggests 16 GB or more for some higher-performance work. Those are broad guidelines rather than guarantees for every current application or combination of tasks. Microsoft Support
What 16 GB and 32 GB mean for gaming
16 GB: a useful baseline, not a universal rule
Two specific game requirements provide a concrete reference: CD PROJEKT RED lists 16 GB RAM for Cyberpunk 2077, and Steam lists 16 GB for Starfield. These are requirements for those titles, not evidence that every game needs 16 GB. A listed RAM capacity also does not guarantee smooth performance by itself; other system components, game settings, and the particular workload matter.

32 GB: more room for simultaneous work
More memory can help a PC keep more work available at once. Microsoft describes RAM as short-term memory: apps and files are loaded from slower storage into RAM for faster access. As Microsoft puts it, “The more memory a device has, the more it can do at the same time without slowdowns.” Microsoft Support
A PC Gamer report published April 10, 2026, compared 16 GB and 32 GB in selected demanding games. It reported similar behavior in several tested titles, exceptions, and less spare memory when other apps were open. That is a limited comparison, not a universal benchmark: the games and hardware tested do not establish a capacity threshold for every PC or game. PC Gamer

Check compatibility before upgrading
RAM capacity is only useful if the computer can support it and be upgraded. Some PCs have upgrade options; others may not. Before buying, check the computer or motherboard maker’s specifications for supported memory and upgradeability. Microsoft directs users to the PC manufacturer or a retailer for upgrade advice.
