For the most room to run local AI on a current Mac mini, choose the M5 Pro with 64GB of unified memory. If your plans are limited to experimenting with smaller local models, 24GB or 32GB is a more practical starting point; 16GB leaves less headroom. For storage, 1TB is a reasonable starting recommendation for a small model collection, while 2TB or more is more comfortable if you expect to keep many models, alternate versions, or datasets. These storage suggestions are planning guidance, not guaranteed capacity requirements.
Current Mac mini memory and storage options
Apple’s technical specifications list two current Mac mini families: M6 configurations with 16GB, 24GB, or 32GB of unified memory, and M5 Pro configurations with 24GB, 48GB, or 64GB. SSD capacity varies by configuration from 256GB to 8TB; the M5 Pro reaches both the 64GB memory and 8TB SSD ceilings. Apple lists 307GB/s memory bandwidth for the base M5 Pro chip and 170GB/s for M6 configurations shown with 24GB or 32GB. Bandwidth is one factor that can affect performance, but these figures do not establish a particular model’s speed or a tokens-per-second result.
How much unified memory should you choose?
For local AI, unified memory is shared working space: Apple explains that Apple-silicon CPU and GPU operations can work on the same data. Model weights occupy part of that space, but context, macOS, other applications, and simultaneous work also need room. Consequently, a model’s file size alone does not tell you whether it will run comfortably.

No tier guarantees that a particular model, context length, or workload will fit or run at an acceptable speed. Quantization can reduce a model’s memory requirements, but the result depends on the model and quantization choices; it can also change quality or precision characteristics. In an Apple WWDC25 MLX demonstration, engineer Angelos described the quantized result as smaller, faster to run, and less memory-intensive. That demonstration explains the technique, not a universal performance guarantee. Apple’s WWDC25 MLX session also covers model downloading, quantization, inference, and fine-tuning.
Why very large models exceed Mac mini memory
Apple’s WWDC25 session gives an example of a 670-billion-parameter model quantized to 4.5 bits requiring about 380GB for weights alone; the demonstration used an M3 Ultra with 512GB of unified memory. Apple’s WWDC26 agentic-AI session says a 1.6-trillion-parameter model needs more than 800GB for weights alone. These examples are far beyond the Mac mini’s current 64GB ceiling and illustrate why memory needs vary dramatically by model. They are not Mac mini recommendations. How much SSD storage should you choose?
Local MLX workflows download model files and can save converted or quantized versions to a local path. Retaining multiple models, versions, or datasets adds to the space used, alongside apps and ordinary files. Apple’s listed Mac mini SSD choices span 256GB to 8TB, depending on configuration.

These are planning suggestions, not claims that a given capacity holds a fixed number of models. Apple’s referenced materials do not provide a standard catalog of model download sizes or a universal amount of free SSD space to reserve. An external USB-C or Thunderbolt SSD can extend a library, but check that a drive’s interface, real-world performance, and current price suit your workflow before choosing one.

Match the configuration to the work
Ordinary chat or inference is not the same workload as fine-tuning. Apple’s MLX material describes low-rank adapter training as lighter than full-model fine-tuning, which is more resource-intensive. For agent workflows, long contexts and concurrent requests add their own demands: models may repeatedly process tool results and accumulated context. Apple discusses distributing some MLX workloads across multiple Macs when one machine cannot accommodate a model.
- For occasional experimentation: Consider 24GB or 32GB, understanding that model choice, context, and other open apps determine the actual fit.
- For maximum Mac mini memory headroom: Choose the 64GB M5 Pro configuration. It is the conservative choice among Apple’s listed Mac mini options, not a guarantee that every model or fine-tuning task will fit.
- For a growing local library: Select SSD capacity based on the files and datasets you plan to keep, and consider a verified external SSD if you need more local space.
- For long-context agents, concurrent workloads, or fine-tuning: Favor more memory, but do not infer a specific speed or compatibility result from RAM or bandwidth alone.
Apple’s published specifications and MLX explanations do not provide a controlled Mac mini comparison mapping memory tiers to model size, context length, tokens per second, concurrent agents, or fine-tuning datasets. Treat exact fit and speed claims as workload-specific rather than guaranteed by a memory figure.
