There is no single power figure for an ESP32 presence-triggered display: the sensor, display, backlight, board circuitry and time spent awake all affect the total. Espressif specifies 10 µA deep-sleep power consumption for the ESP32 chip, but that is not the current draw of a complete display device. Published board examples range from 250 µA in a specified e-ink board sleep configuration to about 170 mA during normal operation on a different RGB-display board.
Why one ESP32 power number is not enough
The ESP32 chip’s deep-sleep figure describes the chip, not everything connected to it. A development board may include a voltage regulator and other circuitry that continue drawing power while the processor sleeps. The presence sensor, display controller, screen and backlight add further loads. Espressif explicitly cautions that a development board is not recommended for directly measuring the module because other board circuits can consume power in deep sleep. Espressif’s module measurement guidance explains the distinction.
The useful figure for a real project is its average current or energy use over a representative operating cycle: detecting presence, waking, performing any network activity, updating or illuminating the screen, and returning to sleep. A low sleep current alone does not account for how often the device wakes or how much current it draws while the display is active.
Published figures—and what they describe
| Device or measurement | Published figure | What the figure covers |
|---|---|---|
| ESP32 chip | 10 µA deep-sleep power consumption | Espressif’s ESP32 Datasheet v5.3 specification; not a whole-board or assembled-device measurement. ESP32 Datasheet |
| ESP32-S3-WROOM-1 example | 8.14 µA deep-sleep current; about 23.88 mA active current | Espressif’s example waveform. It reports 26.85 µW average power in the deep-sleep interval, 78.32 mW in the active interval, and 6.37 mW total power per example cycle. These are example module measurements, not a prediction for a different device. Espressif measurement guide |
| Adafruit Qualia ESP32-S3 RGB-display board | About 170 mA in normal operation; about 8 mA with only the backlight off; below 1 mA after the documented full shutdown sequence | Adafruit’s figures for this specific board and shutdown procedure, not a general ESP32 display specification. Qualia deep-sleep guide |
| Adafruit MagTag e-ink board | 250 µA in deep sleep | Adafruit’s reported whole-board draw with NeoPixels and speaker amplifier disabled; it is not an isolated measurement of the e-ink panel. MagTag overview |
These numbers describe different chips, boards, operating states and configurations. They are useful examples of how much the complete design and its state matter, but they are not interchangeable specifications or a direct comparison of display panels.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How the display changes the load
Backlit RGB or TFT displays
A backlight can be a major part of the active load. On Adafruit’s Qualia ESP32-S3 board, switching off only the backlight reduces the reported figure from about 170 mA to about 8 mA. That still leaves the board above the below-1-mA figure reported after its full shutdown procedure.
The shutdown order matters on that board: its guide says to release display resources, then configure the backlight pin as an output and drive it low. Adafruit warns that reversing the relevant steps or skipping output-register reconfiguration can leave the backlight on, with current draw around 170–200 mA. This behavior is specific to the Qualia board and its documented procedure. See the Qualia deep-sleep instructions.

E-ink displays
An e-ink image can remain visible without a continuously lit backlight, which changes the display’s ongoing power needs. The complete MagTag board nevertheless draws Adafruit’s reported 250 µA in deep sleep when its NeoPixels and speaker amplifier are disabled. That is a board-level example, not evidence that every e-ink display or ESP32 e-ink assembly will draw the same amount.
Measure the complete device over a real cycle
- Measure at the supply or battery input. This captures the assembled device rather than only the ESP32 module, so the reading includes board support circuitry and attached components.
- Capture the full operating pattern. Record the low-current idle period as well as presence detection, wake-up, network activity, display refresh or backlight-on time, and the return to sleep. Include realistic event frequency and awake duration.
- Use an instrument suited to changing current. Espressif notes that ordinary ammeters may not change ranges quickly enough for loads that shift between microamp sleep and milliamp active states. Their internal resistance can also cause voltage drop. Espressif describes using a low-resistance dynamic-range meter and gives Joulescope as an example; its guide also names Nordic’s Power Profiler Kit II as an option. Verify the exact instrument variant and current availability before purchasing. Espressif’s measurement guidance provides further detail.
- Isolate components if the total is unexpectedly high. Compare the sleeping board, the board with the detecting sensor attached, the display attached in its low-power state, and the complete detect-wake-update-sleep cycle. This diagnostic sequence helps identify where current is being used; it is a practical measurement approach, not a prescribed Espressif test protocol.
The whole-cycle average is the more useful input for estimating battery life. A chip’s sleep specification or a brief active-current reading cannot by itself establish how long a particular battery will last.

What you need for a battery-life estimate
The title alone does not specify a board, sensor, display, regulator, battery or schedule, so it cannot determine total current, average power or battery life. Measure average current across realistic idle periods and presence events, then account for the chosen battery’s usable capacity, conversion losses and cutoff behavior. The published examples above do not provide those project-specific inputs.
When comparing two actual builds, use the same measurement point and representative cycle for both. Compare their full-system sleep current with the sensor enabled, active display or backlight current, wake and refresh energy, and how often and how long the display stays active. Without those conditions, a single current figure can be misleading.
