Choose a portable SSD by adding the files you need to carry to the new material you expect to create before your next offload, then leave extra room for active work and growth. A 500GB drive may be comfortable for ordinary documents and photos, according to Seagate, but video, games, and editing projects can need substantially more. Your own file sizes—not a universal capacity rule—are the best guide.
How to calculate the capacity you need
- Measure the files you plan to keep on the SSD. Check the actual folders, including footage, photo libraries, project files, exports, and games you intend to carry.
- Estimate what you will add before you can offload or archive. Use the expected workload for that period, not just the files already on the drive.
- Allow for active work and overhead. Editing can involve source files, proxies, caches, and exports alongside the finished material. Also, formatting and other drive functions mean advertised capacity is not all available for files, as Kingston explains.
- Choose the drive’s role. A drive for transporting files may need less headroom than one holding active projects. If it contains important files, include a separate copy in your backup plan; one portable SSD alone is not a second backup.
- Compare the next suitable capacities. Pick one that covers the measured total, expected additions, and working room. Then compare connection compatibility, speed for your workflow, durability, and price.
Capacity examples by workload
Documents and photos
Seagate says 500GB may comfortably hold ordinary documents and photos. That is an orientation point, not a guarantee: file sizes, collection size, and future growth determine whether it fits. Seagate’s guidance also treats capacity, speed, ruggedness, and security as factors to weigh when choosing an external SSD.
4K video recording
Samsung’s current buying guide estimates approximately 45GB for one hour of 4K video recorded at 100Mbps. Recording time varies with camera settings and quality, so “4K” alone is not enough to predict storage. If possible, use the bitrate or file sizes from your actual camera.
Video editing projects
Raw footage is only part of an editing project: project files, proxies, caches, and exports may also take space. Lexar estimates a complete 4K project can require approximately three to four times the raw footage size, but this is a vendor planning estimate, not a rule for every editing setup. Count your own project assets and working files. Lexar also describes separating active projects from recent completed work, which can help you estimate what must stay on the drive.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Games
Use the measured size of the installed games you expect to keep, rather than a generic count. Samsung’s capacity guide illustrates game capacity using an assumption of 100GB per game and notes that actual sizes vary.
Illustrative file counts
Kingston Technology’s 2019 chart estimates that 1TB could hold 12,800 uncompressed 24MP photos, 333,333 songs at 3MB each, or 2,083 minutes of 4K video at 30Mbps. These are calculations based on the chart’s assumptions, not promised counts for your files. Compression, formats, and actual file sizes change the result.

When a 1TB, 2TB, or 4TB drive makes sense
These capacities are candidates to compare, not workload recommendations. A 2TB portable SSD is a reasonable search phrase if your measured files and near-term additions point to that size, but do not buy it by default. Compare 1TB if your total is smaller, or 4TB if your workload needs more room. In every case, account for usable rather than advertised capacity and leave the working space your workflow requires.

- Connection compatibility: Check the ports and connection supported by your computer, phone, or camera. A drive’s advertised speed is useful only if it suits the host connection and workflow.
- Speed: Consider how quickly you need to transfer or work with files; requirements differ between occasional transport and active editing.
- Durability and security: These matter more when the SSD travels or stores sensitive work. Check the specific model’s claims and requirements.
- Price per usable terabyte: Compare the cost against space actually available for files, not only the number printed on the box.
- Backup plan: Keep a separate copy of important data rather than relying on the portable SSD as its only home.
Samsung features its T9 Portable SSD as a product example in its buying guide; that example is not an independent comparison or evidence that the model is best for every buyer.
