There is, however, a real tension between his public assurance that rates would not rise in the context of T-Mobile’s merger and the company’s 2024 price increases for some customers on legacy plans. That conflict supports asking whether T-Mobile still lives up to its Un-carrier identity; it does not prove that the company has undone “almost everything” Legere stood for.
What Legere promised—and what that promise covered
In February 2019, while T-Mobile was seeking approval for its merger with Sprint, then-CEO John Legere told the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce that he wanted to “reiterate, unequivocally, that New T-Mobile rates are NOT going to go up.” Legere’s congressional testimony records a public assurance made in the merger context. It should not be treated as a guarantee that every T-Mobile plan, including every legacy plan, would remain unchanged indefinitely.
The distinction matters. The Un-carrier brand was associated with simpler offers and a challenger stance toward established wireless companies. T-Mobile’s own history of the Un-carrier describes that positioning and its milestones, but it is the company’s account of its own strategy, not independent proof of how well the strategy worked or how customers experienced it.
What changed in 2024
In May 2024, T-Mobile announced price increases affecting some customers on legacy plans. The changes prompted customers and reporters to revisit the company’s earlier price-stability messaging, including the Un-contract promise. Reporting on the 2024 increases and coverage comparing them with the earlier commitment provide the later counterpoint to Legere’s 2019 statement.

The scope is important: the increase affected some legacy-plan customers, not every T-Mobile customer or every plan. The available evidence supports a specific criticism—that at least some customers saw prices rise after years of price-stability rhetoric—not the broader claim that T-Mobile raised rates across the board or broke a promise that applied identically to every plan forever.
Customer service is a separate test of the Un-carrier idea
In a December 2024 interview with TIME, CEO Mike Sievert described an aspiration to reduce person-to-person problem-solving and customer-service interactions by 75% within three years. He said: “After two years of working on it, one of the aspirations that I unveiled in September was to reduce person-to-person problem-solving and customer service interactions by 75% within a three-year period.” TIME’s interview presents this as a goal, not a confirmed outcome.

Reducing those interactions could reflect more issues being resolved through self-service, but the target alone does not show whether customers are getting help more easily or whether service is worse. Those questions depend on outcomes—such as whether problems are resolved promptly and successfully—not simply on how often customers speak with a person.
Growth does not settle the question of customer trust
T-Mobile reported 6.1 million postpaid net customer additions and $66.2 billion in service revenue for 2024. Those are company-reported business results, announced in 2025. T-Mobile’s 2024 results show growth and scale; they do not measure customer satisfaction, perceived value, or trust.

The company’s 2024 SEC filing also describes its sales and service channels and merger-related restructuring, including retail-store and facility leases. The filing provides corporate context, but does not by itself establish that customer access or service quality declined, or that T-Mobile abandoned Legere’s approach.

That remains unknown. The cited record does not establish a current, direct statement from Legere about the 2024 price increases or T-Mobile’s direction under Sievert. Inferring his private feelings from a past public pledge, the company’s later decisions, or its business performance would go beyond the evidence.

A more supportable judgment is narrower: T-Mobile’s price increases for some legacy-plan customers sit uneasily beside the price-stability identity Legere promoted, especially given his 2019 merger-era assurance. But customer-service ambitions and corporate growth do not independently prove a wholesale reversal, and the evidence does not justify saying that “almost everything” he stood for has been undone.
