Choose MacBook memory for the apps and projects you run at the same time; choose storage for the files and apps you want available on the Mac itself. They are different resources: a larger SSD does not fix memory pressure, and an external SSD adds file capacity—not unified memory. Your best configuration depends on your workload, local-file needs, and the exact MacBook model.
Memory and storage do different jobs
MacBook memory—also called RAM or unified memory—is used by macOS and the apps and projects currently in use. Storage is the space on the SSD for macOS, apps, and files. Because they serve different purposes, neither can substitute for the other: a bigger SSD will not relieve memory pressure, and moving files to an external drive will not add memory.
On Apple silicon MacBooks, memory is unified and built into the system configuration. Check the specifications for the exact model and chip before choosing, because available capacities vary by model.
Choose memory for the work you actually do
For everyday browsing, documents, communication, and streaming, begin with a base configuration that meets the requirements of the current model and the apps you use. There is no official Apple formula that maps a job title or general activity to a required memory capacity, and a particular amount cannot guarantee that a Mac will remain suitable for every future workload.

If you regularly keep many apps open, edit large creative projects, develop software, run virtual machines, or use local AI workloads, check the published requirements for those apps and monitor the Mac during your most demanding typical work. Consider a higher-memory configuration if Memory Pressure repeatedly turns yellow or red during that work. Apple’s cited specifications and support guidance do not establish a universal numeric requirement for these workloads.
Check memory pressure on a Mac you already own
- Open Activity Monitor and select the Memory tab.
- Watch the Memory Pressure graph while using your usual demanding apps and projects. Apple says the graph indicates whether the computer is using memory efficiently.
- Interpret the colors: green indicates efficient use; yellow suggests the Mac might eventually need more memory; red indicates it needs more. Look for recurring yellow or red during normal work rather than judging from one brief spike.
- Review memory-heavy apps and the amount of swapping shown in the Memory pane. If an app is causing high or spiking pressure and you no longer need it, Apple recommends quitting it.
Do not decide based only on the amount of “free” memory. macOS manages memory, and unused memory by itself does not necessarily mean performance would improve. Apple says memory pressure reflects free memory, swap rate, wired memory, and file-cached memory.

Choose storage for local files and room to grow
Estimate how much space your documents, downloads, apps, photos, videos, and active project files currently use, then allow for the growth you expect. Also consider whether you need those files when you are away from an internet connection or external drive. A larger internal SSD keeps more available on the Mac without relying on another device.
A large photo or video library is a storage question in itself; its size does not prove that you need more memory. For editing, consider the demands of the active project and apps separately from the space needed to keep the library.

Use external storage or iCloud selectively
Apple describes moving files or media libraries, including Photos and iMovie libraries, to an external storage device. This can keep files that do not need to live on the internal SSD off the startup disk. You must have the external drive connected to access files stored there, so it is less convenient for work that needs those files constantly or on the go. External storage does not increase unified memory.
macOS also offers storage recommendations and iCloud optimization. Files stored in iCloud use space from your iCloud storage plan; optimization is not the same as adding internal SSD capacity.

Check storage on an existing Mac
- Open System Settings > General > Storage to see how space is being used.
- Use macOS recommendations or remove files you no longer need. Move suitable files or media libraries to external storage, or use iCloud optimization if it fits your needs.
- If the Mac reports low startup-disk space or feels slow, check storage as well as memory. Apple lists insufficient startup-disk space as one possible cause of slow performance.
Current MacBook capacities vary by model
Apple’s listed configurations illustrate why there is no single MacBook baseline. The following are model- and region-specific examples from Apple pages available when checked; configurations can change, so confirm the exact model listing before purchase.
| Apple configuration example | Unified memory | SSD storage |
|---|---|---|
| MacBook Air, Apple UK specifications | 16GB or 24GB starting configurations, with configurable options up to 32GB | Starting configurations of 512GB or 1TB, depending on model and configuration |
| MacBook Pro with M5 Pro, Apple specifications | 24GB starting configuration, with higher options | Varies by chip configuration |
| MacBook Pro with M5 Max, Apple specifications | 36GB starting configuration, with higher options | Varies by chip; specified M5 Max configurations can be configured up to 8TB |
These are product configurations, not recommendations for every buyer. Apple’s UK MacBook Air technical specifications, MacBook Pro technical specifications, and Mac comparison page show model-specific differences. Check the page for your region and exact chip because both availability and capacity options can change.

A practical way to make the decision
- Mostly everyday tasks: Compare the base memory and SSD on the model you are considering with your apps’ requirements and your local-file needs.
- Demanding or heavily multitasked work: Check application requirements and observe Memory Pressure during representative work; investigate a higher-memory configuration if yellow or red pressure recurs.
- Large libraries or archives: Compare their current size and likely growth with the internal SSD. Consider an external drive for material you can keep off-device, and maintain an independent backup plan.
- Existing Mac with slowdowns or warnings: Check both Activity Monitor’s Memory pane and System Settings > General > Storage before assuming one capacity is the cause.
Apple’s Activity Monitor guide to checking whether your Mac needs more RAM explains pressure indicators and memory use. Its Mac storage management guidance covers storage categories, moving files or libraries, and iCloud optimization. Apple also lists low startup-disk space among possible causes of slow performance in its Mac performance troubleshooting guide.
