Choose memory and storage separately when buying a Mac desktop. Memory—called unified memory by Apple—supports the apps and work you are running; SSD storage holds macOS, apps, and files. The right capacities depend on your workload, how much you keep on the Mac, and whether external storage suits some files.
How to choose memory and storage
- Consider your workload and what runs at once. Think about your usual apps and whether you regularly handle demanding creative, development, or technical projects. A higher-memory configuration may suit sustained, resource-intensive work; there is no single capacity that fits every user.
- Estimate what you will keep locally. Include macOS, applications, active projects, photo, video and audio libraries, downloads, and room for future growth.
- Decide what must stay on the Mac. Frequently used working files may be more convenient on internal storage. Suitable large files and backups can instead live on external storage.
- Compare the exact Mac and chip configuration. Capacity choices and maximums vary by desktop and chip. Check the live Apple configurator for the configuration you plan to buy.
External storage can add room for files, but it does not add unified memory. If an app or workload needs more memory, connecting an external SSD does not address that need.
Memory and storage options by Mac desktop
Apple’s listed configurations differ by model and chip. The figures below describe the configurations in Apple’s specifications, not a recommended minimum for any particular workload.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Which capacity fits your use?
Everyday tasks, study, and general use
Start by looking at the apps you typically use together and the amount of data you keep on the Mac. Apple positions Mac mini M6 for everyday users and students as well as developers and creative users, but that is product positioning, not an independent test or a capacity recommendation. Choose among its listed configurations according to your actual workload and local storage needs. (Apple’s September 22, 2026 announcement.)
Development and creative projects
Consider how large your active projects are and how many demanding apps you use concurrently. Apple positions Mac mini M5 Pro for more demanding creative and technical projects. That description can help narrow which family to compare, but it does not establish a universal memory requirement; assess the software and workload you plan to run. (Apple’s announcement.)

Professional production and technical workloads
Mac Studio offers higher listed memory and internal SSD ceilings than Mac mini or iMac, with options varying between M5 Max and M5 Ultra. Apple describes Studio for professional workflows such as 3D, motion graphics, filmmaking, and on-device AI. Treat those as Apple’s descriptions, not independent workload tests; select a configuration based on your projects rather than choosing the maximum by default. An external SSD may be suitable for large project files, media libraries, or backups that do not need to remain on the internal drive. Apple identifies superfast external storage as a Mac Studio Thunderbolt 5 use, and Mac mini specifications list Thunderbolt connections. Before buying a drive, check the exact Mac’s ports and the drive’s interface, capacity, and sustained speed. (Mac Studio connectivity; Mac mini ports.)

External storage is a file-capacity choice, not a substitute for memory. Also, Apple’s cited specifications do not establish whether every model’s memory or internal SSD can be upgraded by the owner after purchase. If future serviceability matters, verify it for the exact model before ordering.
