The right iPhone storage size depends on how much space you use now, what you expect to add, and how long you plan to keep the phone. Check your current storage before choosing: people who record and keep lots of video, download large libraries, or hold onto a phone for years have a stronger reason to choose a higher capacity. There is no single size that suits everyone.
Start with the storage you use today
- On your current iPhone, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Note the amount used and the largest apps or content categories. Look for things that take substantial space, such as photos and videos, games, or downloaded media.
- Decide whether those items are likely to grow before your next upgrade. Consider how much video you record, whether you keep shows, music, or maps available offline, and how long you expect to keep the phone.
- Compare that picture with the storage options for the exact iPhone model you are considering. Check the price difference at purchase time, too; prices vary.
This is a planning exercise, not a fixed formula: your current usage is a useful starting point, but future photos, videos, downloads, and apps can change your needs.
What storage sizes do current iPhones offer?
Apple’s US-facing product pages list these iPhone 17 examples. Options can vary by market, so confirm the exact model and local listing before buying.

How to choose between lower and higher capacity
A lower offered tier may fit if
- Your current phone has modest storage use.
- You mostly stream content instead of keeping large downloads on the device.
- You remove downloads you no longer need and expect to upgrade regularly.
Consider more local storage if
- You record and keep a lot of video or maintain a large photo library.
- You keep shows, music, maps, or other content offline.
- You use storage-heavy games or apps.
- You plan to keep the iPhone for several years, giving your library and app use more time to grow.
These are decision factors, not guaranteed capacity thresholds. File sizes vary with the iPhone model, capture settings, format, and content, so a universal number of photos or recording minutes per gigabyte would be misleading.
Listed capacity is not all available for your files
The advertised capacity is not a promise that every gigabyte is available for personal content. For the iPhone 17 Pro, Apple estimates that a standard configuration uses approximately 12GB to 24GB for iOS 26, included features, and Apple apps that can be deleted. Apple says available space varies with software version, settings, and iPhone model, so this model-specific estimate should not be applied as a universal subtraction rule. iPhone storage and iCloud storage are different
Device storage is the capacity built into your iPhone. iCloud storage holds cloud data such as backups, files, and synced photos. Check device use at Settings > General > iPhone Storage and iCloud use at Settings > [your name] > iCloud. Apple explains the distinction in its iPhone and iPad storage guide.
Apple provides 5GB of iCloud storage free with signup. Backups, photos, files, and other data share that allowance, so it may not be enough for everything you want to store in iCloud. See Apple’s photo and video storage guidance and Apple’s iCloud storage guide.

What Optimize Storage does
With iCloud Photos enabled, Optimize Storage can keep full-resolution originals in iCloud and smaller versions on the iPhone as space is needed. This can reduce local photo-library use if there is enough iCloud capacity, but it does not increase the phone’s built-in capacity or guarantee that local storage pressure will disappear. Accessing full-resolution originals depends on network access. Details are in Apple’s guide to managing photo and video storage.
Be careful when deleting synced photos
If you use iCloud Photos, deleting a photo or video on one device also deletes it from other devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Before deleting to free space, check how your photos are synced and make an independent copy of anything you need to keep. Apple describes the behavior in its iCloud storage guidance.

Make the decision before you buy
- Use your current iPhone’s storage breakdown as a baseline, not a generic label such as “light” or “heavy” user.
- Account for growth in photos, video, offline downloads, and apps, as well as how long you plan to keep the device.
- Compare only the tiers offered for the specific model and market you want.
- Weigh the purchase-time price difference against your willingness to manage downloads or rely on cloud storage.
- Treat cloud photo optimization as a way to manage local space, not as a substitute for choosing enough device storage.
