There is no evidence-based daily or weekly minute limit that fits every student. A commonly used “10 minutes per grade level” guideline can help start a conversation, but it is a modifiable rule of thumb—not a universal standard or a proven cutoff. To judge whether a student has too much homework, compare actual time with school policy and consider whether assignments are purposeful, manageable, and leaving room for sleep, well-being, and life outside school.
What is a reasonable amount of homework?
The National Education Association (NEA) says many districts use a guideline of 10 minutes per grade level. That would mean, for example, roughly 10 minutes for a first-grader or 60 minutes for a sixth-grader if a school applies the guideline literally. The NEA describes it as a “good rule of thumb” that can be adjusted for individual students or subjects; it is not a hard ceiling, and it should not be treated as a threshold established by research.
Age matters, but the evidence does not supply a precise number for each grade. The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) finds that average homework impact is smaller in primary than secondary school and says the optimal amount is likely lower for younger pupils. It does not set grade-by-grade time limits. Check the school or district’s own policy rather than assuming a rule used elsewhere applies to your child.
Does more homework lead to better learning?
Not necessarily. The EEF defines homework as teacher-given tasks completed outside usual lessons. Its toolkit reports an average effect equivalent to five months of additional progress compared with similar pupils not using the approach, based on 43 studies. It reports five months in secondary-school studies and three months in primary-school studies. These are the toolkit’s average-progress measures, not hours of homework; the page was reviewed in August 2021 and rates the evidence security as low.

The EEF says assignment quality appears more important than quantity, and that there is some evidence that impact diminishes as time spent on homework rises. Tasks are more useful when they connect to classroom learning, have a clear aim, and receive high-quality feedback. The review found the highest impacts among studies assigning homework twice a week in a particular subject; that is a pattern in the reviewed studies, not a schedule every school should adopt.
Signs the workload may be too much
Look for a recurring pattern, not just one unusually demanding evening. A workload merits review if it routinely takes substantially longer than the school’s stated expectation, creates persistent stress, pushes bedtime later or cuts into sleep, or regularly displaces time for family, friends, extracurricular activities, and rest.

A 2014 Stanford Report summarized a survey of 4,317 students at 10 high-performing high schools in upper-middle-class California communities. Students reported about 3.1 hours of homework nightly, and 56% identified homework as a primary source of stress. The survey also described reports of sleep deprivation and less time for friends, family, hobbies, and activities. These figures describe that selected group—not students nationally—and self-reports do not establish that homework caused the reported effects.
How to assess your child’s homework load
- Find the school’s expectation. Check the school or district homework policy, then ask the teacher how long the assignment is intended to take. The NEA recommends checking district policy and comparing expectations with colleagues teaching similar grades and subjects.
- Record actual time on ordinary school nights. For several nights, note when focused work starts and ends. Distinguish time spent working from interruptions, waiting for help, or being stuck because instructions or material are unclear. A notebook or basic planner is enough; a special product is not necessary.
- Check whether the work is fit for purpose. Ask what the task is meant to practise or prepare, how it connects to class, and whether the student can do it independently. If an adult must repeatedly reteach the lesson, tell the teacher; the task may not match what the student can yet do alone.
- Consider the whole week and the student’s circumstances. Account for age, sleep, health, activities, and access to a quiet place, suitable device, internet, and learning materials. The EEF notes that unequal access to these resources and to parental support can make homework harder to complete; homework clubs may help address some barriers.
- Bring specific examples to the school. Share the time log and assignments that took unusually long. Ask whether the work can be clarified or adjusted, or whether teachers can coordinate deadlines across subjects. The NEA recommends involving parents and colleagues and comparing observed completion times with policy; this conversation is a practical way to do that, not a formal universal protocol.
What matters more than a single number
When comparing workloads or school approaches, consider the student’s age and grade, how many minutes assignments actually take and how often they occur, their purpose and connection to class, whether students can complete them independently, and whether useful feedback follows. Also consider effects on sleep, stress, relationships, and activities, as well as whether students have the space and materials they need. A time guideline is most useful as a prompt to investigate these factors—not as a verdict by itself.
