Consumption depends on the aircraft model, engine and how it is being flown. Published planning figures range from 8 US gallons per hour for a Robinson R22 to 135 US gallons per hour for a Sikorsky S-70/UH-60, but those figures come from different sources and conditions, so they are not a controlled comparison.
Example helicopter fuel-use figures
These figures offer a sense of the range, not a universal rate. Each is tied to a particular model and source.
| Helicopter | Fuel-use figure | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| Robinson R22 | 8.0 US gal/h (about 30.3 L/h) | Robinson Helicopter Company’s 2026 estimated operating-cost assumption for average use/cruise planning. It is an estimate, not a guarantee for an individual flight. Robinson Helicopter Company |
| Robinson R44 | 60 L/h (about 15.9 US gal/h) | Planning guidance reported by Australia’s Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) in a 2024 investigation report. The ATSB notes Robinson does not publish fuel-flow rates for its helicopters, so this is not a Robinson-published fuel-flow specification. ATSB report |
| Airbus AS350 B3e/H125 | 44 US gal/h | Value in a U.S. Forest Service helicopter-services fuel-consumption chart revised May 16, 2025. It is a procurement/planning chart figure, not a controlled test result or universal manufacturer specification. U.S. Forest Service chart |
| Bell 206BII | 25 US gal/h | Value in the same U.S. Forest Service chart; it has the same procurement/planning qualification. U.S. Forest Service chart |
| Sikorsky S-70/UH-60 | 135 US gal/h | Value in the same U.S. Forest Service chart; it has the same procurement/planning qualification. U.S. Forest Service chart |
Why fuel burn varies
Aircraft and engine
Helicopters differ in size, design and engine. The FAA’s 2019 Helicopter Flying Handbook says piston engines are generally used in smaller helicopters and that most training helicopters use reciprocating engines because they are relatively simple and inexpensive to operate. It also notes that turbine engines are more powerful and used in a wide variety of helicopters, and are generally more expensive to operate. These broad categories help explain why aircraft differ, but they do not establish a universal piston-versus-turbine fuel-use multiplier.
Flight conditions and mission
The rate for a particular helicopter depends on how it is used. The available figures do not establish standardized payload, altitude, speed or mission conditions across the listed models. They therefore should not be treated as a direct performance ranking or used to predict another helicopter’s consumption.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Fuel carried is not fuel used per hour
Fuel capacity, fuel carried and hourly consumption are different measures. The FAA’s Aeronautical Information Manual says civil helicopter emergency medical services (EMS) aircraft typically carry 50–250 gallons, depending on aircraft size, planned flight duration and fuel remaining after flying to the scene. That is a range for fuel carried, not a gallons-per-hour consumption rate.
Which figure should you use?
For a particular flight or operating-cost estimate, use the applicable aircraft flight manual, current operator procedures and aircraft-specific records. A figure for another model—or a planning chart prepared for procurement—may not match the aircraft, conditions or mission in question. When comparing published figures, check the exact model and variant, the intended use and how the number was derived.
