Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) costs from US$383.90 per year for a Server self-support subscription and from US$196.90 per year for a Workstation self-support subscription at Red Hat’s Store, based on its displayed U.S. prices checked in November 2026. Supported paid options cost more: Server Standard is US$878.90 and Premium is US$1,428.90 per year. Individuals and qualifying developers may also get RHEL at no cost, but those subscriptions have use, support, and entitlement limits. The right price depends on what you are running, whether it is production, and whether you need Red Hat support.
RHEL subscription prices at a glance
These are the one-year prices currently displayed on Red Hat’s U.S. Store product pages, checked November 2026. They are in U.S. dollars and describe subscriptions, not perpetual licenses. Red Hat’s Store says subscriptions are typically one year and provided per instance or installation; online purchases activate immediately. Regional availability, taxes, and the terms shown at checkout may differ.
| Subscription | One-year displayed price | Support and key limits |
|---|---|---|
| RHEL Server Self-Support | US$383.90 | No Red Hat customer support; physical systems only; cannot be stacked; not intended for production. |
| RHEL Server Standard | US$878.90 | Web and phone support, unlimited support cases, standard-business-hours coverage. |
| RHEL Server Premium | US$1,428.90 | Web and phone support, unlimited cases; 24×7 coverage for Severity 1 and 2, and standard-business-hours coverage for Severity 3 and 4. |
| RHEL for Workstations Self-Support | Starting at US$196.90 | No Red Hat customer support; not intended for production; one physical workstation entitlement and one guest entitlement for a VM on that workstation. |
| RHEL for Workstations Standard | Starting at US$328.90 | Web and phone support, unlimited cases, standard-business-hours coverage; one physical and one same-workstation guest entitlement. |
Prices and included terms are listed on Red Hat’s RHEL Server Store page and RHEL Workstation Store page. The product pages list the Server SKUs as RH00005 (Self-Support), RH00004 (Standard), and RH00003 (Premium); Workstation lists RH0986300 (Self-Support) and RH0958488 (Standard).
Why do Red Hat’s pages show different starting prices?
Red Hat’s “How to buy” page currently advertises Server starting at US$349 and Workstation starting at US$179, while the corresponding Store pages display US$383.90 and US$196.90 for the lowest self-support choices. The pages do not explain the difference. If you are budgeting a purchase, use the live Store listing and checkout for the price applicable to your order rather than assuming the lower marketing headline is the checkout price.

The distinction matters because the headline is not a complete quote for every configuration. Server and Workstation are different subscription offerings, support levels change the price, and add-ons can increase the total. The store pages identify the prices above as one-year subscriptions. See Red Hat’s RHEL buying page alongside the Store listings for the current displayed discrepancy.
Which RHEL subscription do you need?
Choose the subscription based on the system’s role and support requirement—not just the lowest displayed price. A workstation subscription is for a workstation use case, while a production server needs the appropriate Server subscription. Red Hat says subscriptions must be used for their intended use case, and a Workstation subscription should not be substituted for a production Server subscription.
- Server Self-Support: The lowest listed Server price, but it excludes Red Hat customer support, is limited to physical systems, cannot be stacked, and is not intended for production. It is not the supported-production bargain its price may suggest.
- Server Standard: A paid server option with web and phone support, unlimited cases, and business-hours coverage. It may fit deployments that need access to Red Hat support during standard business hours.
- Server Premium: The higher-support tier, with round-the-clock coverage for Severity 1 and 2 cases. Severity 3 and 4 cases remain covered during standard business hours, so Premium does not mean 24×7 coverage for every severity.
- Workstation Self-Support: For an eligible bare-metal workstation and one guest VM on that same workstation. It excludes Red Hat support and is not intended for production.
- Workstation Standard: The supported workstation option, including the physical workstation and one guest VM entitlement on it, plus web and phone support during standard business hours.
The Store listing describes support terms, but the subscription guide is important for assigning support correctly: Premium coverage on one subscription cannot be used to get Premium support for a system covered at Standard level. Add-ons inherit the underlying RHEL subscription’s service-level agreement. Read the Red Hat Enterprise Linux subscription guide before assigning entitlements across systems.
What do RHEL Server add-ons cost?
Red Hat currently displays these selectable add-on prices on the one-year Server Standard and Premium Store listings. The amounts below are add-on prices, not replacement prices for the base Server subscription; check the configured order for the total and compatibility applicable to your purchase.
| Add-on | Server Standard listing | Server Premium listing |
|---|---|---|
| Satellite bundle | US$1,263.90 | US$1,813.90 |
| High Availability | US$438.90 | US$438.90 |
| Resilient Storage | US$878.90 | US$878.90 |
| Extended Update Support | US$273.90 | Not listed on the Premium listing in the supplied Store pricing. |
These are prices displayed as selectable items on the Server product page, checked November 2026. The listing does not establish that every add-on is appropriate for every deployment. Confirm the applicable product terms and final amount before purchase. The subscription guide says add-ons inherit the service-level agreement of the base RHEL subscription.

Can you use RHEL for free?
Yes, but “free RHEL” refers to specific no-cost developer subscriptions, not unrestricted free production licensing for any company or system. The right program depends on whether you are an individual, a business developer, or an eligible existing Red Hat customer organization.
Individual Developer Subscription
The Red Hat Developer Subscription for Individuals is no-cost and self-supported. Red Hat’s current FAQ permits individual use for development, testing, demos, prototyping, QA, cloud access under program terms, and small production uses. It is not a 30-day trial, but it is not a general corporate or team subscription either. Only one Individual Developer Subscription can be attached to a Red Hat user account; additional developers need their own accounts.

The offering supports x86_64 and aarch64 (Arm). When used with Red Hat Cloud Access, it covers up to 16 physical or virtual nodes. Power and IBM Z are handled through the Teams offering rather than the Individual Developer Subscription. It is not tied to a single RHEL release and may be used with currently supported RHEL versions. The program is self-supported, so it does not include paid customer support.
To get it, join the Red Hat Developer program; the subscription is automatically added to the account. Then open Red Hat’s Download Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) page and choose “Activate your subscription” or a release-specific “Download” button. The Individual subscription is not directly available in the Customer Portal before activation. After joining, use the Customer Portal’s Subscriptions page to check status, expiration dates, and attached systems.
Business Developers and Teams
Red Hat Enterprise Linux for Business Developers is a no-cost, self-service subscription intended for business development and testing—not production. It provides 25 entitlements per registered user, supports all RHEL architectures, and excludes Satellite from the RHEL software set. This is a better-defined business-development route than sharing an individual’s personal subscription across a company.

Red Hat Developer Subscription for Teams is a no-cost development offering for qualifying existing Red Hat customer organizations. It is self-supported, although paid support add-ons may be available for certain included subscriptions. The current North American Product Appendix describes Teams access as development-only and excludes Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform. Since that appendix is geographically scoped, organizations should confirm the terms applicable to their region and account. See Red Hat’s buying information and the North American Product Appendix.

Start with the number and type of installations, then choose the support level and any required add-ons. Do not calculate the budget from the number of employees or from a single desktop download: Red Hat’s subscription guide says paid subscriptions must cover every system and virtual instance where RHEL is installed, regardless of RHEL version.
- Count installations. Include each physical system and virtual instance with RHEL installed. A Workstation subscription’s included guest entitlement is specifically for one VM on that same workstation; do not assume it covers unrelated servers or VMs.
- Classify each system by purpose. Identify server versus workstation use and production versus development/testing. The Self-Support listings are not intended for production, and a Workstation subscription is not a production Server substitute.
- Select support per system. Decide whether standard-business-hours support is enough or whether Severity 1 and 2 incidents need Premium’s 24×7 coverage. Do not assume Premium on one system upgrades another system assigned Standard.
- Identify add-ons and lifecycle requirements. Include only the listed add-ons the deployment needs. If a system must remain on an older minor release or needs support beyond the standard lifecycle, check the applicable Extended Update Support or other extended lifecycle terms.
- Verify the final order. The Store shows the current one-year price and online purchases activate immediately. Review the region-specific listing and checkout, because the U.S. Store values in this guide may not equal the final amount for every buyer.
Paid RHEL Server subscriptions can be moved between physical, virtual, and cloud deployments without changing subscription terms, subject to Red Hat’s agreement restrictions. A subscription may also be migrated between systems with similar characteristics if the total subscriptions still match the total installed systems. That flexibility does not remove the coverage requirement: each installed system still needs to be covered.
What does a RHEL subscription buy besides software?
A RHEL subscription includes access to the RHEL software and the benefits specified by the subscription level; it is not simply a one-time operating-system download fee. Standard and Premium add Red Hat support at different coverage levels, while Self-Support omits customer support. Red Hat Lightspeed, formerly Red Hat Insights, is included with RHEL Server according to Red Hat’s current Server page.
RHEL major releases have a standard ten-year lifecycle, but that does not mean ten years of new updates and fixes under every phase. In the Extended Life Phase, customers can access previously released content and limited technical support, but there are no new bug fixes, security fixes, hardware enablement, or root-cause analysis. Extended support arrangements require the applicable subscription.

Red Hat also lists Extended Life Cycle (ELC) support for eligible even-numbered minor releases, providing six years of support from that minor release’s general availability. Renewable Long-Life terms continue in one-year increments after ELC ends. If a Long-Life term expires, the system is left with an archive channel and receives no new updates, bug fixes, or CVE coverage. Red Hat’s current eligible list is RHEL 8.10 (ELC Premium only); RHEL 9.2, 9.4, 9.6, 9.8, and 9.10; and RHEL 10.2, 10.4, 10.6, 10.8, and 10.10. Check the live Red Hat errata and lifecycle policy for the terms tied to the release you operate.
As of April 1, 2025, Red Hat Enterprise Linux for Real Time components are included in RHEL subscriptions rather than treated as a separately priced base subscription component. Confirm whether other specialized requirements call for a distinct add-on or entitlement before assuming the base subscription covers them.

For a paid subscription, activate it in the Red Hat Customer Portal through the Subscription tab and subscription activation tool. You need the product activation code, also called the subscription number. Red Hat’s subscription guide explains the activation process.
For the no-cost Individual Developer Subscription, renewal is available after expiration or within its 30-day renewal window. Sign in at developers.redhat.com, select the displayed checkbox accepting the terms, and select “Submit.” If the checkbox is not shown, check the Subscriptions page in the Customer Portal. Which RHEL versions are available now?
Red Hat’s developer download page currently lists RHEL 10.2, released May 12, 2026, and RHEL 9.8, released May 19, 2026. It offers x86_64 and aarch64 Boot ISO and DVD ISO downloads, as well as an x86_64 WSL2 image. The specific downloads can change, so use the current RHEL download page rather than relying on a saved installer link.
Having access to an installer does not remove the entitlement requirement. Paid subscriptions must cover each installation; no-cost developer subscriptions are governed by their own architecture, node, account, and use restrictions. The Individual Developer Subscription is not limited to one RHEL version, but it applies to currently supported RHEL versions under its program terms.
Is RHEL free, or does it always cost money?
Neither simple answer is accurate. Paid subscriptions have published prices, while eligible individuals and organizations can use specified no-cost developer subscriptions within their conditions. Treat “free RHEL” as a program with defined eligibility and usage terms—not as a universal free production entitlement.
How we determined the price guidance
This guide uses the current Red Hat Store prices and subscription descriptions for Server and Workstation, plus Red Hat’s developer, lifecycle, and subscription documentation. The Store’s listed one-year U.S. prices are used where available; where Red Hat’s own buying page shows a different headline starting price, both figures are disclosed rather than treated as equivalent. This is a pricing and entitlement guide, not a claim of independent product testing.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens to my RHEL files if my free developer subscription expires?
Red Hat says expiration does not delete the installed system or its files. Until you renew, however, that installation is not eligible for updates, support documents, or the other subscription benefits.
Does a RHEL subscription include real-time components?
Red Hat states that, as of April 1, 2025, RHEL for Real Time components are included in RHEL subscriptions rather than treated as a separately priced base subscription component. Check the applicable subscription terms for other specialized requirements.
Can I use one Premium RHEL subscription to get Premium support for another Standard-covered system?
No. Red Hat’s subscription guide says a higher support level cannot be applied to a system assigned a lower support level. Support entitlements need to match the coverage assigned to each system.
