There is no single worldwide figure for how much data an average person uses: the answer depends on whether you mean mobile data or all internet traffic, and whether usage is counted per person, subscription, or device. For a useful current mobile benchmark, Ericsson reports 21 GB per active smartphone per month globally in 2025; the ITU reports 15.3 GB per mobile broadband subscription. Neither figure is a direct measure of every person’s total internet use.
What does the average person use each month?
For mobile data, two major 2025 global estimates offer useful reference points, but they measure different things:
| Source and measure | Monthly figure | What it counts |
|---|---|---|
| Ericsson, 2025 | 21 GB | Average traffic per active smartphone worldwide |
| International Telecommunication Union (ITU), 2025 | 15.3 GB | Average traffic per mobile broadband subscription worldwide |
An active smartphone and a subscription are not interchangeable units: a device may use more than one subscription, and a subscription does not necessarily correspond to one person. These figures are therefore benchmarks for mobile networks, not a universal per-person average.
Why can the numbers vary so much?
Mobile data is not the same as all internet use
Cellular data is traffic carried over a mobile network. Home internet use is usually carried over fixed broadband, including when a phone connects to Wi-Fi. The ITU estimates 2025 fixed broadband traffic at 505 GB per subscription in high-income economies and 248–310 GB in low- and middle-income economies, compared with 15.3 GB per mobile broadband subscription globally. These figures have different geographic groupings and denominators, so they should not be treated as a direct like-for-like comparison. Much of the traffic used on mobile devices while connected to Wi-Fi travels over fixed networks.

Geography changes the benchmark
Ericsson’s 2025 estimate ranges from 5 GB per active smartphone per month in Sub-Saharan Africa to 36 GB in India, Nepal and Bhutan. North America and Western Europe are each estimated at 25 GB per active smartphone per month. These are regional figures per device, not country-specific or per-person averages.
Country estimates may use different methods
For the UK, Ofcom’s 2025 report gives an average of 9.2 GB per mobile connection per month in 2024 and estimates 10.2 GB in 2025. The 2025 figure is an estimate based on 2024 operator data and includes residential and business customers. It is not a measurement of every UK resident’s total mobile use.

What usage patterns can mean for your allowance
App mix makes a large difference, especially when video is streamed over cellular rather than Wi-Fi. Ericsson’s calculator presents illustrative monthly profiles—not survey results—as follows:
| Illustrative profile | Monthly data | Example behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Light use | 1 GB | Light overall use |
| Social-media-centric | 5 GB | Social media is a central use |
| Video-centric | 19 GB | More than an hour of video streamed over cellular daily; video accounts for over 90% of monthly traffic |
| Heavy use | 30 GB | Heavy overall use |
These profiles help show why two people with the same device can use very different amounts. They are not predictions of your use; your own records are a better guide.

How to check whether your data plan is enough
- Check the right measure. Review cellular or mobile data, not total internet use that includes Wi-Fi, if you are choosing a mobile allowance.
- Open your provider account or device usage records. Check the period that matches your billing cycle; the exact interface and cycle settings vary by provider and device.
- Compare several months. Look for typical use and unusually high months, rather than choosing an allowance based on a single month.
- Compare your usage with the plan’s allowance and current terms. Leave room for months with extra video streaming, downloads, hotspot use, or time away from Wi-Fi.
Ofcom’s UK tariff analysis includes fixed mobile data baskets of 5 GB, 10 GB, and 25 GB. Those are comparison categories used in its 2025 analysis, not recommendations for what every person should buy.
What rising network totals do—and do not—tell you
Ofcom reported that UK mobile data use exceeded 1.2 billion GB per month in 2025, up 18% from the previous year. That is a national network total, not an individual average: dividing it into a personal benchmark would require matching definitions for the number and type of users or connections. Ofcom Group Director for Infrastructure and Connectivity Natalie Black said, “The UK’s demand for data continues to grow as we live increasingly connected lives.”

Is there a reliable US average per person?
The cited sources do not establish a current US-only average per person. Ericsson’s 25 GB figure covers North America and is measured per active smartphone, so it should not be relabeled as a US per-person statistic. For an individual plan decision, use your own mobile usage records and distinguish cellular use from Wi-Fi traffic.
