Effects creator Dave Presto estimates that Peacock’s Crystal Lake used “probably 50 gallons of blood, if not more.” That is an estimate—not a verified production tally—and Presto called the amount “obscene.”
What the 50-gallon estimate means
In an October 6, 2026 report, Gizmodo relayed comments Presto gave to Entertainment Weekly. Presto recalled asking whether the show would use “level 10” gore and said creator and showrunner Brad Caleb Kane replied, “No, we wanna go 10.” Presto then estimated the production used “probably 50 gallons of blood, if not more.” Gizmodo’s report
The figure should be read as Presto’s approximate estimate. The report does not establish an audited total, specify that it counts only blood seen on screen, or break the amount down by episode. “Level 10” is part of Presto’s recollection of a conversation, not an official gore rating.
What the series is—and why the gore is notable
Crystal Lake is an eight-episode Friday the 13th prequel centered on Pam Voorhees and the town after young Jason drowns in the lake. NBCUniversal’s synopsis says two strangers arrive to investigate Pam’s past, prompting the townspeople to question who she is. Brad Caleb Kane created, wrote, and executive produced the series; the announcement names Linda Cardellini, William Catlett, Devin Kessler, Cameron Scoggins, and Gwendolyn Sundstrom among the cast. NBCUniversal says all eight episodes will stream exclusively on Peacock in the US beginning October 15, 2026.

Kane has described the show as a story about the town and Jason’s mother, rather than the familiar setup of teenagers being hunted at camp. He has also said it includes Easter eggs and recreations for fans of the original films. That is Kane’s stated approach, not a judgment on the finished episodes. TV Insider reported that the series shifts Jason’s drowning timeline from the 1950s to the 1970s; that detail comes from interview coverage, not NBCUniversal’s official synopsis. Linda Cardellini has also described some of the gore as practical. In Variety Australia’s interview coverage, she said, “It does get gory, yes, so much so that I wish sometimes they weren’t as practical as they were.” She recalled “a couple of gory moments on set” that were “pretty gross,” with “blood everywhere at one point.” These comments support that practical effects feature in at least some scenes, but they do not provide a complete inventory of the show’s effects methods or verify Presto’s estimate. Cardellini has also said the eight-episode format leaves room for more story than a feature-length horror film; she described the series as not simply “90 minutes of pure horror.” The production’s blood estimate, therefore, is one vivid detail about the show’s effects—not a substitute for knowing how its full story or episodes play out.
