Meteorites have no universal price: rare lunar, Martian and some other achondrite specimens can be worth more per gram than ordinary chondrites or most iron meteorites. Type and rarity are only part of the picture; classification, provenance, size, condition, preparation and appearance also influence value. Without identifying a specimen and comparing it with similar material, a reliable estimate is not possible.
Why meteorite prices vary so much
Meteorites are classified using features such as structure, chemistry, isotopic composition and mineralogy. NASA groups them broadly as stony, iron and stony-iron meteorites. These categories help explain differences in collector interest, but the category alone does not determine a price. NASA says more than 95% of meteorites observed to fall are stony; that figure is not a measure of how common each type is in the collector market. NASA Johnson Space Center explains the main meteorite categories.
Rarity can make a substantial difference. Washington University in St. Louis notes that lunar, Martian and some other achondrite meteorites tend to command higher per-gram prices than ordinary chondrites and most irons. Even within a rare category, availability and specimen-specific characteristics matter, so the label does not establish a particular value. Washington University’s lunar meteorite information describes a wide range in online prices for lunar samples, but does not provide a dated, representative survey or guarantee of completed-sale prices.
What affects a specimen’s value?
- Type and rarity: Lunar, Martian and some other achondrite material is generally more sought after per gram than ordinary chondrites and most iron meteorites.
- Classification and official name: A documented scientific classification and recognized name help establish what the specimen is and can improve buyer confidence.
- Provenance and history: A credible record of where and when a meteorite was found, how it was handled, and its prior ownership can support confidence in the specimen.
- Mass and piece size: Meteorites are commonly priced by the gram, but a simple weight calculation does not account for differences in rarity, quality or demand.
- Condition and preparation: Damage, weathering, cutting, polishing or other preparation can affect appeal. Washington University cautions that poor preparation may diminish collector value.
- Appearance and quality: Aesthetic appeal, visible features and overall quality can distinguish one specimen from another of the same general type.
- Availability: Scarcity in the market can matter independently of the meteorite’s scientific category.
These factors are described in university educational material, including Washington University’s meteorite information and the University of Minnesota classification resource excerpted in the Ghana Science Association’s 2023 Earth and Space Science Magazine. The sources do not establish a standardized formula that converts these factors into an appraisal.

How to compare prices responsibly
Price per gram can be a useful starting point only when the specimens are genuinely comparable. A price someone is asking is not proof that a buyer paid that amount; where possible, distinguish an advertised listing from a documented completed sale. Compare the underlying material and documentation before treating one price as a guide to another specimen.
| Comparison factor | What to check |
|---|---|
| Type and classification | Is each specimen formally classified, and are the classifications comparable? |
| Name and provenance | Is there a recognized name, a documented fall or find locality, and a credible history? |
| Mass and piece size | Compare total mass and the size of the individual piece, not just a per-gram figure. |
| Condition and preparation | Note damage, weathering, cutting, polishing and other preparation. |
| Quality and appearance | Consider visible features and aesthetic appeal rather than assuming all material of one type is alike. |
| Availability | Check whether comparable specimens are similarly scarce or readily available. |
| Price evidence | Identify whether the figure is an asking price or a documented completed sale. |
What to do if you think you found a meteorite
A description, photograph or magnet test is not enough to identify a specimen reliably or determine its value. Some stony meteorites may not hold a magnet, and dense dark rocks that streak black or red may instead contain common iron minerals, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. UCLA also notes exceptions to simple magnetic expectations in its meteorite FAQ.

Scientific identification can require evidence beyond appearance. NASA describes, for example, comparisons of composition and evidence such as trapped gas in Martian meteorites that matches measurements of the Martian atmosphere. A seller’s certificate or magnetic response should not be treated as conclusive proof by itself. NASA’s meteorite facts explains some of the evidence used to establish origin.
- Record the find: Note the location and circumstances, and preserve any known history or ownership records.
- Document the specimen: Record its weight and dimensions, photograph it, and note its condition and any cutting or preparation.
- Seek scientific guidance: Contact a university or museum meteorite specialist, or ask a state geological survey or natural history museum about appropriate identification routes. UCLA lists these types of institutions as potential contacts.
- Assess value only after identification: Use the resulting classification and documentation to find genuinely comparable material, distinguishing asking prices from completed sales.
Is there a reliable price per gram?
The sources cited here do not establish a current representative price per gram or a market-wide average based on documented completed sales. A University of Minnesota price range appears in an excerpt published by the Ghana Science Association in 2023, but it is broad educational context rather than a verified current-market guide. Washington University’s online lunar-meteorite examples likewise lack a stated date and transaction methodology. Neither provides a sound basis for pricing an unidentified specimen.
