To calculate it, multiply the requirement by the amount named in the offer—bonus alone, or sometimes deposit plus bonus. The exact offer terms and the rules where you bet determine which wagers count and whether you can withdraw your own money before finishing.
What does a wagering requirement mean?
A wagering requirement—also called playthrough or rollover—is a condition attached to a promotion. It sets a total amount of qualifying wagers that must be placed before the bonus funds, or winnings covered by the promotion, become withdrawable. A bonus is not automatically cash, and meeting a turnover target does not guarantee a win or a particular balance.
The multiplier alone does not tell you the full requirement. You need to know both the multiplier and its calculation base, as well as what the offer counts as a qualifying wager.
How do you calculate the qualifying stake?
Use this formula: qualifying stake target = multiplier × calculation base. The target is cumulative stake turnover, not the amount you are expected to lose or win.

| Example | Calculation | Qualifying stake target |
|---|---|---|
| Bonus-only base: £10 bonus at 50x | £10 × 50 | £500. The UK Gambling Commission used this as an illustration of a high wagering requirement in 2025; it is not a recommended or current offer. |
| Bonus-only base: DKK 100 bonus at 10x | DKK 100 × 10 | DKK 1,000, in an example from the Danish Gambling Authority; the page’s publication year is not displayed. |
| Deposit plus bonus base: DKK 100 deposit and DKK 100 bonus at 10x | (DKK 100 + DKK 100) × 10 | DKK 2,000, in an example from the Danish Gambling Authority; the page’s publication year is not displayed. |
The last two examples show why the base matters: a 10x requirement can mean DKK 1,000 or DKK 2,000 in qualifying stakes depending on whether the deposit is included.
Do you have to wager your deposit as well as the bonus?
Only if the promotion’s calculation base includes the deposit, or its terms separately require play with your own funds. An offer might calculate the multiple on the bonus alone, or on the deposit and bonus together. Check the wording rather than inferring the base from the multiplier.

Also check which sports, markets, bet types, odds and stake amounts count. The terms may set an expiry, limit how much bonus value can convert, or say that some bets contribute only partly or not at all. They should explain when the deadline starts, whether the bonus itself can be withdrawn, and what happens if you decline or cancel the promotion.
Can you withdraw your money before you finish the rollover?
That depends on the applicable rules and the offer, so do not assume a promotion gives the operator a right to hold your own funds. Under UK Gambling Commission guidance, a customer can withdraw their deposit funds while a bonus is active or pending. The Commission says deposit and bonus balances should be shown separately; a wagering requirement may apply to bonus winnings, but not to play made with the customer’s own deposit funds.

New York has a separate rule: operators must disclose when a promotion requires or puts a bettor’s own funds at risk, and cannot restrict withdrawal of own funds or winnings from wagers made with those funds. These are jurisdiction-specific protections, not a universal rule for every mobile sportsbook.
What happens to a free bet if you win?
Check the promotion’s terms for whether a winning free bet returns the stake or only credits the winnings, and whether those winnings carry a wagering requirement. The regulatory material summarized here does not establish one universal treatment of free-bet stakes or winnings. Do not assume that a winning free bet converts to withdrawable cash automatically.

Which wagering rules apply where you bet?
The legal protections differ by jurisdiction. The examples below describe the rules in the named sources, not a worldwide standard.
| Jurisdiction | What the cited rules say | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| UK Gambling Commission licensees | From 19 January 2026, wagering requirements for incentives that require customers to play through bonus funds are capped at 10x. A ban on mixed-product promotions involving two or more types of gambling also took effect on that date. Commission guidance says deposit funds remain distinct and withdrawable while a bonus is active or pending. | Attribute the cap and protections to the UK Gambling Commission and the relevant rules. They are not a global cap. |
| Denmark | The Danish Gambling Authority says playthrough requirements may not exceed 10x, eligible games must contribute 100%, and prizes won while using a bonus may not be subject to wagering under Danish law. | These statements describe Danish rules; do not apply them to offers governed elsewhere. |
| New York | Promotion terms must be full, accurate, clear and concise. They must disclose when a bettor’s own funds must be used or put at risk; a promotion cannot be described as risk-free if own money is at risk to use it or withdraw winnings. Own funds and winnings from own-funded bets cannot be blocked. | The cited New York provision does not establish a general wagering-multiplier ceiling. |
The UK Gambling Commission says its 10x cap is intended to improve clarity and reduce the risk of customers gambling longer or faster than they expected. The effective date matters: the cap described here took effect on 19 January 2026.

What to check before accepting a mobile bonus
- Find the calculation base. Identify whether the multiple applies to the bonus alone, the deposit alone, or deposit plus bonus.
- Work out the total turnover. Multiply the applicable amount by the stated requirement. Treat the result as qualifying stake, not as a target profit.
- Define a qualifying bet. Read the terms for eligible sports and markets, odds thresholds, bet types, stake limits and whether a wager counts in full.
- Check access to your balance. Find out whether the bonus is withdrawable, which winnings are subject to playthrough, and what happens to your deposit if you cancel or withdraw.
- Check the clock and forfeiture terms. Note when the deadline starts, when the offer expires, any maximum conversion, and what causes bonus funds or winnings to be forfeited.
- Confirm the governing jurisdiction. A regulator’s protections apply within their stated scope; they do not automatically govern an account or offer elsewhere.
Terms can change, and these rules do not determine the details of any particular operator’s current promotion. If an offer does not clearly state its base, qualifying wagers, withdrawal treatment and expiry, do not assume the most favorable interpretation. A wagering requirement is a promotional condition, not a way to make betting profitable; the UK Gambling Commission has warned that high requirements can confuse customers and lead them to gamble longer or faster than they are used to.
