What you can do depends on the game: region, data center, and world are different concepts, and temporary visits are not the same as a permanent character transfer. The examples below use FINAL FANTASY XIV (FFXIV) and Guild Wars 2; neither game’s rules should be assumed to apply to every MMORPG.
Why am I in a server queue?
A queue is a game-specific way to manage sign-ins when many players are trying to enter a service or world at once. Square Enix explains that in FFXIV, severe congestion can make queues longer because an extremely large number of players are signing in simultaneously. The publisher’s FFXIV login congestion FAQ says that cancelling login loses your place in the queue.
If you are already waiting, cancelling and signing in again may therefore put you behind where you were. FFXIV also documents an option to visit a lower-population world within the same Data Center, but the destination can itself become congested at peak times. Queue behavior, any wait estimate, and any priority rules vary by game; the reviewed official guidance does not establish a universal queue algorithm or a typical wait time across MMORPGs.
What is the difference between a region, data center, and world?
These labels are related, but they are not interchangeable—and MMORPGs do not use them in a single standardized way. As a practical starting point, a region commonly refers to a geographic or service grouping, a data center is the operator’s service location or grouping, and a world or server is a player-facing environment or destination. Always check how a specific game uses the terms.

Guild Wars 2 offers one official example: ArenaNet says an account’s region helps connect it to a data center and localized support. The support page describes Europe and North America as data center regions, with China served separately, and says registered accounts can select a home world from either North America or Europe. It also says players can access the game from anywhere they can log in. See ArenaNet’s guidance on selecting a Guild Wars 2 world. That account and world-selection model should not be treated as a general rule for other games.

- Connection: A geographically closer data center may improve connectivity, but ArenaNet does not quantify a latency improvement, and proximity is no guarantee of a particular connection quality.
- Friends and community: Check whether your friends are on the same world and whether the game supports visiting or playing together across worlds.
- Availability: A world may be closed to new characters or transfers because of its population classification or character limits.
- Transfer rules: Confirm eligibility, cooldowns, account limits, costs, and character-specific consequences in the game’s current official policy before making a decision.
Can I switch servers to avoid a queue?
Possibly, but first determine whether you mean visiting another world temporarily, creating a new character elsewhere, or permanently transferring an existing character. Those actions can have different rules and may not solve the same problem.
Temporary visit: an option documented by FFXIV
In FFXIV, the character-selection screen has a “Visit Another World Server” command for visiting another world within the same Data Center. Square Enix describes this as a way to access a lower-population world when the Home World is congested. Some gameplay restrictions apply, although the main quest remains available. The support page does not promise that the visited world will have no queue or remain uncongested: FFXIV login congestion FAQ.

Permanent transfer: a separate FFXIV service
A permanent Home World change is handled through FFXIV’s Home World Transfer Service, not by using the visit command. The official Home World Transfer Service guide says players must log out of the game and exit the client before beginning the process. Destination worlds classified as Congested cannot be selected. The transfer guide and live world-status page explain classifications and availability; those classifications can change, so check them immediately before acting.
Do not assume a transfer will be free, immediate, reversible, or available to every character. The exact eligibility and consequences are game- and policy-specific. Read the current official transfer instructions before paying or submitting a request.

Why might character creation or a transfer be unavailable?
Publishers can restrict new character creation or transfers when a world is full or congestion threatens service stability. Square Enix says it monitors world loads and may adjust character-creation and transfer limits to prevent outages related to login and world congestion. Its Lodestone world-status page is the current place to check creation availability.
FFXIV transfer eligibility can also depend on the destination’s population status and the account’s character-count limits. The official transfer FAQ and guide give the current service rules; the game’s classifications and transfer treatment are subject to change. Avoid relying on an old status list or assuming that a world shown as open earlier will remain available when you apply.

Before you choose a world or transfer a character
- Check the exact game terminology. Identify your account region, data center, current home world, and any cross-world visit feature in that game’s official support pages.
- Check the live status. Confirm that character creation or transfer to your intended destination is currently open; for FFXIV, use the Lodestone status page.
- Compare your priorities. Consider connection quality, friends and community, population, and whether temporary visiting is enough.
- Read the transfer terms. Verify current eligibility, cost if any, character and account limits, cooldowns, and consequences before submitting a permanent move.
- Use the publisher’s instructions. Follow the game’s current official process rather than cancelling a queue or attempting a transfer based on another MMORPG’s rules.
