Why there is no single reliable fleet number
“Running” can mean several different things: registered for automated operation, estimated to be active, operating without a safety driver, or available to take a passenger’s request. Those are not interchangeable measures. Tesla’s reviewed investor update and service information do not give a precise current vehicle count, while the available outside tallies use different definitions, geographies, and dates.
The most useful answer is therefore a qualified one: a tracker showed 771 estimated active U.S. vehicles on October 8, 2026, while AP cited a separate estimate of more than 200 unsupervised robotaxis in Texas and Florida in September. The 771 is not a confirmed count of driverless cars or cars ready to dispatch rides.

Where Tesla lists Robotaxi service
Tesla’s support page lists limited service areas in Austin, Dallas, and Houston, Texas, and Miami, Orlando, and Tampa, Florida. Riders request trips through the Robotaxi app, choose a destination within the displayed area, review the fare and estimated wait, and confirm the request. In its Q2 2026 update, Tesla listed the San Francisco Bay Area as “Safety Driver” service under a California permit. It listed Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando, and Tampa as “Ramping Unsupervised,” and said it expanded Austin’s unsupervised area and launched unsupervised rides in the three Florida cities in July. What Cybercab’s rollout does—and does not—tell us
Tesla’s Q2 update said Cybercab production had started and employee rides began on the Gigafactory Texas campus in July. Axios reported that public Cybercab ride-hailing began in Austin on September 3, 2026, and counted 45 Cybercabs among 420 Texas robotaxi registrations on September 4. Production, employee rides, registration, and public passenger service are separate milestones; none alone tells you how many Cybercabs were actively carrying public passengers. Axios also reported that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Tesla had not filed a Cybercab exemption request and that the agency was in contact with the company and monitoring the situation. How to read the next fleet-size headline
- Check the definition: Is the number a registration count, an estimate of active vehicles, or a count of vehicles actually dispatching rides?
- Check supervision: Does it include cars with a safety driver, or only unsupervised vehicles?
- Check geography: A Texas-and-Florida unsupervised estimate is not comparable to a U.S. total that includes California.
- Check the date and source: The tracker’s state entries carry separate dates, and a registration snapshot can differ from a later estimate.
Without those details, a large fleet headline can sound more definitive than the underlying count. For now, the number of Tesla robotaxis actually available to take passenger rides at a given moment is not established by the cited figures.
