DIRECTV does not set one universal limit on how many people can watch at once: it limits concurrent streams, and the rules depend on your service type, whether a device is on your recognized home network, and sometimes the channel. Satellite customers can use five simultaneous DIRECTV app streams. Most customers with internet-connected DIRECTV service and no satellite dish have no stated in-home stream cap, but can use up to three streams away from home.
DIRECTV stream limits at a glance
| Service or situation | Concurrent-stream limit |
|---|---|
| Satellite service | Five streams in the DIRECTV app on compatible devices, at home or away. DIRECTV’s device and app streaming limits. |
| Internet-connected service without a satellite dish, on the recognized home network | Most customers can stream concurrently on compatible devices with no stated in-home cap. DIRECTV’s device and app streaming limits. |
| Internet-connected service without a satellite dish, away from home | Up to three concurrent streams; no more than two can be streaming devices connected to a TV. DIRECTV’s device and app streaming limits. |
| Fox and listed Fox-affiliated channels | Up to three simultaneous streams, at home or away. DIRECTV’s device and app streaming limits. |
These are stream limits, not person limits. If each viewer watches one stream, the stream allowance is a practical guide to how many people can watch separately. A person watching on multiple devices can use more than one stream.
How the limits work by service and location
Satellite customers: five app streams
DIRECTV’s current support guidance allows satellite customers five concurrent streams in the DIRECTV app on compatible devices, whether they are on the home network or on the go. This limit concerns app streams, not a separate count of people.
Internet-connected service without a dish: home versus away
For most customers using DIRECTV over the internet without a satellite dish, compatible devices on the recognized home network can stream at the same time without a stated in-home cap. Away from that network, the allowance is up to three concurrent streams. Of those, at most two may be TV-connected streaming devices. For example, a Gemini device and a Fire TV Stick used away from home would occupy two of the three available streams.

Fox and the Fox-affiliated networks listed by DIRECTV—including Big Ten Network, Fox News, Fox Business, FS1, FS2, and Fox Deportes—are limited to three simultaneous streams, including when you are at home. The channel rule can therefore be lower than the usual in-home allowance for internet-connected service.
Other streaming apps are separate
DIRECTV’s stream limits do not apply to third-party apps such as Netflix or HBO Max. Those services set their own rules.

What DIRECTV counts as your home network
For DIRECTV’s internet-connected service, the home network is associated with your home IP address. DIRECTV says you designate it when you first sign in to the DIRECTV app on a streaming device connected to your home internet. Devices using a different network count as out-of-home streams.
If you move or change internet provider, DIRECTV allows you to update the home network up to four times within 12 months. Its stream-limit guidance directs customers who encounter an in-home limit message to check home-network setup; the home-network instructions explain how that designation works.

What to do when you see a stream-limit error
- Close a stream on another device. Stop playback or close the DIRECTV app on a device that is no longer being used.
- Wait a few minutes, then try again. DIRECTV notes that a closed stream may take a few minutes to release its capacity.
- Check the home-network designation. If you are at home but DIRECTV treats the device as away, confirm that it is using the network designated as home.
- Restart or refresh the app. If the error continues, close and reopen the DIRECTV app, check for an app update, reinstall it, or restart the connected device. See DIRECTV’s stream-limit guidance and app troubleshooting guidance.
Check device compatibility before setting up a TV
DIRECTV supports specified models of Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, Roku, Apple TV, Google TV/Chromecast, and other connected devices. Some third-party TV devices may only work for streaming on home Wi-Fi, even when a phone, tablet, or computer can stream on the go. Check DIRECTV’s current compatible-device list and the model and software requirements before buying or setting up a device. Adding a compatible streaming device gives you another way to watch on a television; it does not increase your subscription’s stream allowance.
